General Overview

On offer is our 4 bedroom home with 4 separate lounge/dining areas across the road from Ansteys Cove where you can have a walk, take in the English Channel and, during the warmer months, have a meal or a drink. As we live in the property it is mainly only available during the UK school holidays. We do have a 2 bedroom flat downstairs which is listed separately. We usually choose to exchange the flat when it is not rented out during the main holiday season and our home during the UK school holidays.

The Space

The house is halfway up a hill and the garden whilst large, is hilly and has a couple of seating areas, pond and bbq. Opposite the house is gorgeous Anstey's Cove where you can go for a quick dip, rent kayaks and stand up paddle boards and have a coffee and breakfast whilst watching the waves (in season). Entry to the home is up a set of stairs. We have the main living room with smart tv and netflix complete with gas fire, a playroom/kid's lounge area with tv and playstation, a second reception / dining room, full kitchen and our newly installed garden room at the rear which has a small kitchenette and offers sweeping views of the back garden and access to the terrace at the back. There is a shower room on this floor. There is also an office which will be locked and not available during the exchange. Upstairs are 4 spacious bedrooms and a bathroom. I believe we are listed as sleeping 9. There would be a king size bed in bedroom 1, a super king bed in bedroom 2, a single bed in bedroom 3 and another single in bedroom 4. We also have 2 single mattresses (1 child size, 1 normal) that can house additional people and the playroom downstairs also has a double sofa bed. There is also a portable crib on offer. If the configuration is not quite right, let us know and we can try and accommodate you. The house is surrounded by gardens galore (there are about 5 sections), there are 2 front gardens, terrace, middle garden and top garden which our children call the secret garden as it is hidden away. There is also a pond, a rope swing and a trampoline in the car park. At the end of the garden is room for parking. Alternatively, there is plentfiul street parking at the front of the house. There is a bus stop right outside the house if you prefer public transport. If you are after a large, bright and airy house near the beach, we can offer you that. However, our house is home to 3 children and 2 cats and whilst we can promise the property will be welcoming and offer you all your home comforts, it is not pristine. The house is a labour of love and we are slowly doing it up. That does mean that some parts are more worn than others and it may have a cobweb or two. We do have 2 very friendly cats who are fed via a gravity feeder and we would just ask that their feeder is topped up occasionally. They are used to dogs and we are happy to have 4 legged friends stay.

Guest Access

Tor means hill and quay means landing next to a harbour. Put together, Torquay is full of hills and valleys. Our house is typical of many in the region and is situated up a hill and presents a challenge for those with mobility issues. There are stairs and steps from the parking area to the flat and also from street level up to the house itself. This does have the upside of some good views across the horizon but comes with the downside of steps. Children of any age are welcome. However, please note there are a few steps either down from the car park to the flat (but in the main accessible for buggies) or from street level up to the house (about a dozen or so steps). I have 3 children myself and they have no problem running up and down the stairs.

Notes

We are seeking exchanges for up to 7 days to Malaga and/or Sol y Nieve Sierra Nevada between 14-22 February 2026 or 3 - 21 April 2026 and can offer our house in exchange on a simultaneous or non-sim basis. We are interested in exchanges to Germany (particularly Bavaria and Black Forest) in August 2026 and can offer an exchange on a sim or non-sim basis. For August 2027, we are planning a trip to Australia with possibly Japan tagged at the end. We are staying with relatives for most of our Australia stay but would be interested in anything from the sunshine coast upwards to Cairns , anything else in Queensland or anything in the Northern Territory. It has been a long desire of ours to visit Japan and we are hoping to spend a week there seeing just one or two places at the end of August /early September 2027. We are not particular where in Japan we go, so surprise us. Again, we can offer an exchange on a sim or non-sim basis.

Neighbourhood

The house is situated in Wellswood, one of the more desirable neighbourhoods in Torquay with green leafy views from most directions. We have nice, friendly neighbours on either side of us. The property is situated on a main road but is set back high above (we are 2 double decker buses above the road) and far back from the road (there is a large front garden and path in front) so whilst you are the thick of things, most people walking past would not even know the house is above them (the house is so set back that you are unable to view it on google streetmaps).. Over the road is a path leading to Anstey Cove, which according to The Beach Guide is "a peaceful, shingle beach located on the coast path between Torquay and Babbacombe. Limestone cliffs, interesting rock formations and views across Lyme Bay to the Dorset coast. There is a shop and cafe on the beach, which is set among wooded hills" The shop rents SUPs and kayaks if you are feeling adventurous. The south west coastal path also runs past the cove. Stoodley Park playground is also nearby. There is a bus stop right outside the house (no 11 and 22) which takes you into the town centre and Paignton. In the other direction, it takes you to Teignmouth (with a great outdoor pool and long beach promenade) and Dawlish Warren (with its famous black swans) which are the next towns. Local shops in Babbacombe are a 10 minute walk away with a plethora of restaurants, a couple of convenience stores and a park with a playground. You can also walk to Wellswood in 10 minutes with another set of shops and a lovely french bakery. The walk to Torquay town centre takes about 20 minutes. It may be best to take the bus back though as its an uphill walk back home. There are numerous local beaches nearby with Babbacome, Oddicombe (with its famous furnicular railway leading to the beach) and Meadfoot being within 15 - 30 minute walking distance. Other beaches further afield include Maidencombe Beach and the umpteen beaches in the beautiful South Hams. Local sights include Kents Caverns with its UNESCO geopark prehistoric caves, Torquay Harbour and the quaint thatched cottages at Cockington. Further afield, you have Paignton with its geopark playground and water play area, harbour and of course sandy beaches. There is also a zoo and water park. Brixham forms the third of the trio of three towns that forms Torbay wth Torquay and Paignton being the other two. Brixham offers chocolate box scenes of the seaside, Berry Head Nature Reserve and beaches too numerous to name as well as a lovely saltwater pool. As a popular holiday destination, there are activities galore near and far including fishing and various boat trips, lots of walks in wooded and coastal paths, Alpine Ski Club with dry ski slope (a firm favourite with my children), Woodlands Theme Park, River Dart Country Park, Pennywell and Occombe Farms, Becky and Canonteign Falls, Babbacombe Model Village with its quaint miniature models of houses, and various sceneries, Dartmoor with its 101 walks , picturesque Dartmouth and the steam railway. You can also follow the Agatha Christie Mile retracing places associated with this famous author. Within a hour's drive you also have the gorgeous beaches of the South Hams including Salcombe and Blackpool Sands. As a holiday destination, Torquay has numerous spas and eateries offering relaxing spa days and the quintessentially seaside favourites of afternoon tea and fish and chips.

Getting to my home

The main train stations are just over a mile away at Torquay and Torre respectively and offer services to Exeter, London and beyond. They also take you down the other direction to Cornwall. Most people travelling to Devon will use the M5 and then the A380 which has been greatly improved with the recent arrival of the bypass.

Nearest airport

The nearest airport is at Exeter which is about 40 minutes away or else there is Bristol, which depending on traffic, is about 1 1/2 hours away. You can of course come here from London Heathrow and London Gatwick which are about 3-4 hours away.
