Neighbourhood
Our house is on a quiet street, and is a 10 minute walk to the centre of Kingston upon Thames, a lovely historic village along the river Thames. Kingston is flat and perfect for cycling, we have bicycles that can be used.
We are equally distanced between Surbiton and Kingston train stations, where a train to central London (Waterloo station) takes 20-30 minutes depending on the number of stations it stops at. Wimbledon and Clapham Junction are only 10 minutes away by train.
It is a 20 minute bus ride to Hampton Court Palace, home of Henry VIII. We are also about a 20 minute bus ride to Chessington World of Adventure, a fantastic zoo and theme park.
Nearest airport
Accessible via Gatwick or Heathrow airports, between 30-60 minutes travel time depending on type of transport or time of day. J
Gatwick is via Surbiton train station with one change at Clapham Junction.
Heathrow is via a bus (SL7, cost £1.50) or taxi (approx £35-50)

Locally, there are lovely riverside walks with lots of good pubs and cafes to stop at. The centre of Kingston is good fun in summer, and beautiful in autumn. You can hire a small boat to take on the River Thames, or be a passenger on the riverboat to Hampton Court Palace. Theme parks: Chessington World of Adventure is a great day out for kids with theme park rides and a zoo, this is around 20-30 minute bus ride. Legoland is 40-60 minutes drive.
The best thing about where we live is that Central London is very easy to access, a 20-30 minute train journey to Waterloo station taking you directly to the lively Southbank area. There is so much to do in London I won't go into that - but important to know that you can easily enjoy an evening in London - the last train home is just after midnight (we can help with your journey planning). An uber home at night from London usually costs around £30-40.
Enjoyable day trips south include to the coastal towns of Southampton, Portsmouth and Bournemouth which are easily accessible from nearby Surbiton train station.
People who have previously exchanged with us have done day trips to Oxford and Stonehenge by car.
