General Overview

Our house is a comfortable 3 bedroom cottage situated in the beautiful mural town of Sheffield, North West Tasmania. The house is within walking distance to the local shops, cafes and facilities. It is ideal for a couple, a family or a group of friends. It is central to many tourist attractions as well as the natural beauty including Cradle Mountain National Park, Lake Barrington, Mount Roland and Mole Creek Caves.

The Space

Our house has three-bedrooms accommodating up to 6 people and is a great country retreat with a private fully fenced garden. 
Upon entering, you will feel relaxed and welcomed instantly.
The three bedrooms include two rooms with queen beds and one with two single beds. All the bedrooms have wardrobe space for storage. 
The bathroom features a spacious shower as well as a luxurious bathtub and plenty of hot water. The water pressure is very good. 

We spend a lot of time in the open plan kitchen and dining room area that is also linked via doors to the sunroom. The kitchen offers all that you could need to whip up your own gourmet delights from outstanding fresh local produce.

Tasmanian winters can be cold. Our home has 2 fireplaces – 1 in the sunroom, the other in the loungeroom. There are also Tower heaters in every bedroom. The loungeroom is very comfortable and has a Smart TV and Wi fi. There is also a collection of books and games for you to enjoy at your leisure. 

The laundry has a washing machine and a clothes dryer. There is an outside clothesline as well as 2 small internal clothes lines for smaller items.  There is extra storage space in the laundry. There is a mud room out the back as well for extra space. 

Outside there is a spacious fully fenced area with several fruit trees. The house is pet friendly on request and the fences are high enough to keep your dog safe. There is ample private parking, including undercover parking for one vehicle. An external power point allows for recharging of an electric vehicle in the undercover parking area. There are three bicycles to enjoy riding around the local area. You would have access to a large shed with an undercover washing line.

Our home is on one level with 2 stairs at the back of the house into the back yard.  

Wheelchair access is available through the front of our home and into the bathroom space as well.

Notes

There are Solar panels on the roof and a hot water system out the back. Our home is on town water, and it is safe and tasty straight from the tap.

Neighbourhood

Sheffield is a lovely quiet township famous for its many Murals. There is an international  Mural festival every year in November. 

Sheffield has rightly earnt the reputation as Tasmania's Outdoor Art Gallery. Murals adorn the buildings on the main streets in town with over 200 now available to view. The murals in town tell the history of the area; people that have lived here, events that have happened and some of the natural attractions nearby. 

Steamfest is another popular international festival every March in Sheffield. A permanent steam train runs on the first full weekend of every month, in full view of one of the most scenic mountain vistas Australia has to offer.

Lake Barrington (just 15 minutes from Sheffield) is a designated "big fish" water, stocked by the Inland Fisheries Service with king size fish for anglers. Permits are required for fishing in inland waters in Tasmania.

Lake Barrington is also ideal for water-based activities such as swimming, rowing, water skiing, power boating and canoeing. It features camping sites, picnic areas with sheltered tables, BBQs and toilets.

It has a World Class International Rowing Course and is a great place to get away from it all for a day. There is a walk to Forth Falls for those that enjoy a waterfall walk. 

Tazmazia (15 minutes from Sheffield), is a popular local attraction with one of the world’s largest maze complexes, with a total of eight magical mazes to lose yourself in, each completely different from the last.

The Tasmanian Arboretum is a 20 min drive and is a collection of trees of the temperate world in a beautiful and peaceful landscape. More importantly, it is the best place in Australia (ref Australian Platypus Monitoring Network) to see Platypus in the wild. They can reliably be seen most days in Founder's Lake and at any time of the day. 81 bird species have been recorded and plenty of other wildlife are also present.

There is an abundance of places to visit within an hour of Sheffield. 

Within a scenic 45 mins drive from Sheffield is the Outstanding Cradle Mountain National Park. 
​​Iconic Cradle Mountain is a place of exceptional natural beauty in the heart of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area (TWWHA). From moss-covered ancient rainforests and deep river gorges to snow-covered mountain peaks, wild alpine moorlands and glacial lakes, the park is revered for its diverse and breath-taking landscapes. 
Cradle Mountain is synonymous with nature, wilderness and all things pristine. Wildlife is in abundance in this spectacular national park, giving opportunity to encounter Tasmanian devils, quolls, platypus, echidna, wombats and the highly inquisitive black currawong.This is our favorite place to walk and it never disappoints.

Mole Creek is accessible via a beautiful 30 mins countryside drive through Gogg Range.  A full day can be spent exploring the Mole Creek Karst Caves (need to book by phoning 2 weeks prior), Trowunna Wildlife Park – great to see Devils feeding and Quolls (we recommend the 3pm tour), Honey Farm at Chudleigh and enjoy beautiful food at Georgie’s Cafe at 41° South Tasmania Salmon Farm. 

Latrobe is a bustling township located within a  25 minutes drive through lovely countryside. Latrobe sits on the Mersey River which is great for kayaking and maybe spotting platypus along the river walk.  

Anvers chocolate factory is a must for a visitor to Latrobe– serving amazing food as well as offering a large range of chocolates. Reliquaire is a unique magical wonderland full of surprises and a must for a visit to Latrobe. There is also a great Thai restaurant called (Thai Imperial) and the Australian Axeman’s Hall of Fame. 

Deloraine is a beautiful historic town situated on the stunning Meander river and is 30 minutes drive from Sheffield. The National Trust has classified Deloraine for its historic buildings. Nestled up against the Great Western Tiers Mountain Range, Deloraine is home to one of Australia's biggest craft fairs. This tiny town grows tenfold every November for the springtime fair. Nearby Liffey Falls offers up an easy day's nature walk to a stunning waterfall and is one of our favorite walks as well. 

For Mountain bike lovers, the Wild Mersey Mountain Bike Track is just few minutes away and for horse-riding lovers The Tasmania Trail is just a short stroll down the road from our home. You can rent mountain bikes at Latrobe.

Within a 2 hours drive is the stunning Ben Lommond National Park. When the snow melts, a spectacular alpine landscape is revealed and you’ll be in awe of the beauty of the rocks set against stunning views. There are plenty of walks and rock climbing opportunities, and with wildlife in abundance it is not uncommon to see several different species in a day. Ben Lomond National Park is Tasmania’s off-the-beaten-track gem – sure to surprise and delight.

Most of Tasmania is accessible within a 3-hour drive of Sheffield. We have enjoyed holidays at Stanley, St Helens and Hobart.

Getting to my home

Although the nearest airport is Devonport, if you are travelling by plane, most travellers come to Sheffield via Launceston airport which is 1 hour and 10minutes away from Sheffield. Hobart Airport is another option if you are visiting Southern Tasmania prior to coming Northern Tasmania. 

Visitors also come to Tasmania via the Spirit of Tasmania. This large ferry carries passengers, pets, cars, caravans and trucks between Geelong in Victoria to Devonport in Tasmania. Devonport is a 30 minute drive to Sheffield.

Nearest airport

The nearest airport is Devonport which is a 30-minute drive. Launceston airport is 1 hour and 10minutes drive from Sheffield. Hire cars are available from the airport.

Getting Around

Guests could walk 1.6km into the local shops which takes 20 minutes or 2 minutes if you drive. There are also 3 bikes if you wish to ride into town.
 
Personally, we think you need a car to fully explore the area we live in, although there are some buses available to some locations.

We like to take travel slowly and enjoy what the area surrounding us has to offer. We are new to home exchange but are keen to start.
