General Overview

Our home is a large semi-D built in 1918, full of Art Deco charm, but with all the modern amenities to make your stay a truly comfortable one.

The Space

Our home has 5 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and a separate toilet on each of its 3 floors. A beautiful open staircase in the center of the house connects all floors. Lots of stain glass windows, wood details and a marble mantle in the living room. Both the living room and dining room have period mosaic wooden floors. The sun room in de back leads to a covered patio with seating and a dining table that seats 8. The garden has a firepit with seating as well as your pick of fruits, herbs, flowers and veggies in season. There is a nice size kitchen with a large fridge (with water and ice dispenser), wine fridge, double oven and microwave. We have a Quooker, so you can have instant boiling water from the tap when you need it. I love to cook and bake so the adjacent walk in pantry has all the kitchen gadgets you might need. Upstairs we have underfloor heating for a comfortable stay in cooler months. The second floor has a small gym with a rowing machine, treadmill, weights and yoga mats you are welcome to use. It has a TV to stream workouts from your own device. The gym also has a kitchinette that serves as a coffee and tea station. Both large bedrooms (master bed 180x200, guest bed 160x200) on this floor have a balcony. The third floor bathroom has a washer and dryer to make a longer stay even more comfortable. This third floor has three bedrooms. Both kids rooms have a 140x200 bed, one of them an additional 140x190 sofa bed. The quirky corner room with the tower is a great hangout spot for kids/teens. There are two single size sofa beds here (90x200) but our kids use it to play video games or just hang out with friends. If you bring your own Nintendo Switch just put it in the stand and it’s ready to play on the big screen.

Guest Access

Our house has three floors total, with a large open staircase connecting them. We don't have safety gates installed, so use your best judgement when it comes to young kids.

Notes

Our cat George would preferably be part of the exchange and we would be happy to take care of cats or any small pets on your end. Throughout our past exchanges we’ve noticed he’s happy and relaxed when he gets to stay home, whereas the pet hotel is stressful. We will always give priority to exchange requests from people who indicate they can look after him during their stay (provide food only, the litter tray is automatic). We have some plants in the house that might need a sip of water while you're here and in the garden some fresh veggies (depending on the season) for you to harvest and eat if you want. There are 4-5 bikes you're welcome to use for a true Dutch experience! We also have standup paddle boards, beach toys and a cabinet full of books and board games. Our kids love making music, so if you know how to play the keyboard/piano or the guitar (acoustic and electric) you're welcome to borrow theirs.

Neighbourhood

Heemstede is a very friendly and quiet town with a nice shopping street that's just down the road from our house. You will find everything you need including 3 supermarkets, bakeries, restaurants, butcher, greengrocer, fresh flowers, fishmonger, pharmacy, toy store, book shop, clothing stores, the best cheese shop and many many more. On sunny afternoons people flock to the open air terraces for a drink with friends. There is a small street market on Wednesdays with fresh fruits and vegetables, cheese and bread among others. Heemstede even has a Michelin star restaurant and it happens to be walking distance from our house! For bars, theater, concert halls and a movie theater, as well as many beautiful museums and even more shops and restaurants (including two more Michelin star ones) the city center of Haarlem is only a 10-15min bike ride away. Our house is surrounded by beautiful parks and water and if you prefer the beach, Zandvoort or Bloemendaal are 30 minutes by bike or a quick 10-15 minutes by car. From the nearest trainstation (7 min by bike, or 20 min walk) you can reach Amsterdam Central Station in about 20 minutes.

Getting to my home

From Schiphol Airport by car or taxi takes only 20 minutes. Alternatively, Dutch public transportation is clean, safe and reliable. The network is extensive. We are a 7 min bike ride or 20 min walk away from the nearest trainstation. The nearest bus stop is a 3 min walk. Street parking in Heemstede is free, except along the main shopping street.

Nearest airport

Amsterdam Schiphol Airport is about 20 min by car/taxi or 30 min by public transportation.

Getting Around

Get the true Dutch experience and use our bikes during your stay! Although convenient, you don't necessarily need a car in The Netherlands. There are lots of options for fun activities, shops and restaurants within walking distance or you can take a bus or train. Haarlem city center is only 1-2 stops and you can pay by tapping your credit card.
