Getting Around

There is a public transportation system in Nanaimo but it's best to have a vehicle to get around to explore the city and the other wonderful places on Vancouver Island. Nanaimo is referred to as the hub city because of it's central location for accessing places like Vancouver (three different ferry routes), the west coast of the island with its world-class surfing and wilderness (2.5 hour drive), the charming and vibrant capital city of Victoria (1.5 hour drive), the sprawling beaches of Parksville (20 minute drive), and the wild alpine of Strathcona Park. But you don't have to drive to any of these places because there's plenty of things to do and places to explore and enjoy right here in Nanaimo that will fill up your days!

Linnea & Barry

We are a recently retired couple and are grateful to have called Vancouver Island home for the past 37 years. Vancouver Island is often referred to as Canada's outdoor playground due to its abundance of natural beauty and recreational opportunities: hiking, rock climbing, mountaineering, trail running, cycling, paddling, skiing, surfing, golfing, scuba diving, snorkeling, swimming, fishing, mountain biking, camping, storm watching, beach combing, sailing, boating, ziplines, bungie jumping, kiting, birding, whale watching, and more. We regularly participate in many of these activities and love taking photos of our adventures. Nanaimo's central location makes it perfect for accessing all of these various activities and so much more, including easy access urban cultural centres like Victoria and Vancouver. With a population of 100,000, Nanaimo has all the amenities of a city but without the crowds. When we're not busy enjoying all that Nanaimo and our island has to offer, we enjoy making our home and gardens beautiful and are involved in volunteer work in our community serving marginalized persons. And, of course, we also really enjoy travelling, which is why we decided to join PLU. We've travelled extensively in Canada, USA, and Mexico. We've also been to Nepal four times doing humanitarian work. We lived in Turkey for six months while visiting friends there. We've spent time in Ireland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, France, Netherlands, Austria, Switzerland, Spain, Italy, Greece, Belize, Dominican Republic, China, and Malaysia. We stayed with friends or family in many of these places but also on our own. We'd love to visit some of these countries again but also explore new ones. We have flexibility for our home availability for both short-term and longer term stays. Please contact us if you'd like more information about us, our home, or the beautiful island we live on.
