Neighbourhood

Groningen is a vibrant yet relaxed city located in the north of the Netherlands, with a rich history and an international atmosphere. The city has been around since the Middle Ages and is home to one of Europe's oldest universities (founded in 1614). You'll find a mix of historic charm, modern architecture and a wide range of cultural offerings – all in a compact and easily accessible centre. Groningen is often seen as a quieter, friendlier alternative to Amsterdam: the same canals, markets and museums, but without the hustle and bustle of mass tourism. It is not for nothing that Groningen was named Most Livable City in the Netherlands. The city is well-organized, safe and very easy to explore by bicycle or public transport. The city offers plenty of culture and relaxation. Visit the iconic Groninger Museum, known for its high-profile exhibitions, or enjoy concerts, theater, and dance at De Oosterpoort. An evening movie in the futuristic Forum or a walk along the historic city center and the Noorderplantsoen are among the many possibilities. In spring, day trips to the world-famous flower fields and the Keukenhof are well worth it. From Groningen you can easily travel to the rest of Europe: Amsterdam (2 hours), Berlin (6 hours) and Paris (7 hours) are easily accessible by train or car. Closer by is the Wadden Sea World Heritage Area, perfect for nature lovers who want to walk on the mudflats, spot seals or spend a day on the islands. In winter, the hills of Winterberg and Sauerland are also within half a day's drive – ideal for a few days of snow. Groningen is international, culturally rich and comfortable – a great base for those who like to stay quietly, discover culture and take an occasional trip. An ideal place to enjoy the good life at your own pace.

Getting Around

You don't need a car in Groningen – everything is easily accessible by bike and much is within walking distance. The lively city center, the green Noorderplantsoen and various supermarkets, cafes and shops are all within a 10-minute walk from our house. For those who like to cycle, we provide two adult bikes, two children's bikes and an electric cargo bike with space for two children. Ideal for exploring the city the Dutch way. Just 100 meters from our house is a bus stop with direct connection to the main station. By car you are on the ring road within a few minutes and you can easily get out of the city towards the countryside or other cities. The infrastructure in the Netherlands is excellently regulated, with an extensive network of safe cycle paths. The Netherlands is truly a cyclist's paradise.
