Ajijic has been deemed a Pueblo Magico by the Mexican Government. It earned this status because of it traditional architecture and art (murals), with no chain restaurants or stores in the center. In addition to traditional Mexican food, there are many restaurants who have a mix of foods and vary from every day restaurants to upscale with unique variations on the cuisine. We chose this home for its lovely view of the lake, private pool, secure gated community and walkable to many restaurants, markets and downtown. Bus stop directly at the bottom of our hill with direct access to downtown, Chapala and Guadalajara. We welcome adults but no children under 8 due to non-secure pool and no pets, please. We have a twice a week maid for about four hours each time, a weekly gardener, a pool service. We also have a local property manager if there are major issues that arise. We have 24 hour security.
The Space
We have available three bedrooms. Master has king size bed with ensuite bath and private patio. Guest bedroom is king-size bed with view and the 3rd is a TV room with comfortable queen size pull out couch. These two rooms share a full bath with shower. There is an additional exterior full bath with shower , attached to the house, that is is primarily used for pool showers, housekeeper, gardener or when an extra bath is needed. We are on a hillside overlooking Lake Chapala, the largest lake in Mexico. The lake is beautiful and makes our weather temperate. You can take boat rides operated by locals around or across the lake. But the lake is not good for swimming. Our street and the streets in the central area are cobblestone. We are in a 20 house condominium with each house of unique design and no shared facilities. There is no smoking in our house.
Guest Access
The house and yard are on one level. We are below street level on a hill, so there are 10 steps to enter and exit the house. The house is on one floor. We have a 24 hour security guard at the front gatehouse. Keys can be exchanged there if it is a non-simultaneous exchange.
Notes
We have a garage, and may loan out our car. If you choose to rent a car, we will make our garage available to you. Taxis are inexpensive and we can provide you with a reliable driver's name that you can call. The bus to downtown and also to Guadalajara stops at the bottom of our hill frequently. We have a landline phone in the office on which you can make calls to anywhere in Mexico for free.

Neighbourhood
We are on a hillside. One can walk to the bottom of the hill from our home, about a 5-10 minute walk. From there, is the main street into town. At the bottom of our hill there is a bus stop, vegetable market, and a little "Costco" with other supplies. There are many shops, restaurants, a lovely plaza and a Malecón ( boardwalk) in downtown Ajijic, 2 km away. We can make recommendations at your reservation time depending on your preferences. There is a traditional street market on Wednesdays in downtown Ajijic and an organic market less than one kilometer away on Tuesday mornings. There are three hospitals within the area for emergencies. Another lakeside town, bigger than Ajijic and the headquarters of our municipality, is Chapala. It has a lower concentration of expats there and it is easier to practice your Spanish there. They also have a malećon too, which is quite different than Ajijic's. Ajijic malecón is tranquil but Chapala has small "tianguis- (booths) and several several seafood restaurants on it. Natural hot springs (balneario) baths, with different soaking options and massages, are in the town of San Juan Cosalá just 8 km. away. Farther afield are Guadalajara, and the town of Tequila. We can recommend a driver or tour agency that can take you to these places. There is a nine hole, walkable golf course open to the public ,6 miles away. We have golf clubs available for your use.
Getting to my home
The taxi from the Guadalajara airport is about a 45 minute ride south. It costs about 630 pesos.. There is a taxi kiosk inside the airport to pre-pay and a credit card can be used. Airport Taxi drivers have Google maps in which we can give you the address to enter.
Nearest airport
Guadalajara - about 40 kilometers
Getting Around
Shops with basics are at the bottom of our hill. There is a larger market called Panchos with a wider variety of goods as well as a selection of wines and frozen meats and fish, that is 1.8 km away. There are no supermarkets but Walmart is 4.7 km on the carretera (main road) heading east toward downtown Chapala.

We are an American expat retired couple living in Ajijic, Jalisco, Mexico. We are members of the Rotary Club of Chapala Sunrise which is an active club, engaged in projects in the villages around us that have few resources. We travel extensively. We like to explore new countries, and share the culture the we have chosen to live in to others.. We have lived in the Ajijic/Chapala area for 15 years full time. Therefore, we are able to share tips, experiences, ways to get around and ideas for sites to explore in the area. Normally, we travel as a couple or with one other couple with us. For our home, we do not accept pets or children under 12 as our pool is not secure.
People Like Us is the world's most trusted home exchange community. We believe in sharing, trust, generosity, respect, communication, equality, cooperation, honesty, hospitality, friendship, flexibility and adventure. We take pride in our homes and we care about the environment in which we live: our village, city, country and our planet. We care about the ethos of home exchange and we do it because we love the experience and the friendships that it generates.
