Neighbourhood
We're really nicely located for exploring Reykjavík. We're next to the city center but just enough out of it to be free of the party noises and rattling suitcases. We actually used to live 350m closer to the center and the difference is night and day, haha, it's remarkable.
In our immediate area you might wish to go the park for a stroll or visit the art museum and café there (Kjarvalsstaðir). You could go to the swimming pool to have a swim or just hang out in the hot pots and the shallow pool like we do! It's very popular when the sun is shining. The kids love to go to the pool and afterwards go for ice cream. There's also plenty of playgrounds around the area. It's nice to walk around the neighborhood and into the center, go through the small side streets and by the old houses, or walk by the seaside to view the sunset and the mountains or go the other direction to reach the small forest (Öskjuhlíð) and eventually the other seaside where there's a small beach (Nauthólsvík) and, of course, another pool. In Öskjuhlíð there's a museum in Perlan where you can see the northern lights simulated, explore a man made ice cave and other interesting things - particularly for kids.
There are many many cafés and restaurants around suitable to different tastes, feel free to ask us for a recommendation based on your preferences. We love the vegan café that is just 5 minutes away.
Nearest airport
Keflavik Airport is 45 minutes by car.
You can also take the Airport busses. Airport Direct stops 15 minutes walking distance from our place (closer if you pay extra for a particular drop off location).
Getting Around
Walking distance examples:
Laugarvegur shopping street - 5 minutes
Sundhöll swimming pool - 5 minutes
Klambratún park - 5 minutes
Bonus supermarket - 10 minutes
There are taxis and busses (straeto.is). The location is optimal for the bus. But it is very common to rent a car to explore Iceland. Parking is free in our street.
From our place you could do many interesting day trips. For example The Golden Circle, Snæfellsnes peninsula, Reykjanes peninsula, black sand beach (Reynisfjara) or see some wonderful waterfalls like Gljúfrabúi or Seljalandsfoss.
