General Overview
Our cottage is a quirky and cosy home. It sits nestled in a small hamlet in a peacful location. Enjoy home comforts indoors, a sea view from the front deck, walking routes on the doorstep, and access to the fells & lakes just a 15-20 minute drive away.
We are positioned in what used to be old farm buildings, still on the site of a very small working farm. The farmer & his family are our neighbours, as well as sheep, horses, alpacas, and hens.
Our home is perfect as a base to access all the western lakes /fells and beyond. The nearest town is Whitehaven, where you will find all the basic amenities for shopping, fuel, etc. Whitehaven has some fine examples of Georgian architecture and an impressive historic harbour, combined with a more modern marina. Coal mining and shipping were the traditional industries. In fact, until the 18th century, Whitehaven was one of the largest port in England, but was eventually replaced by Liverpool. Today, it is the starting point of the popular Coast to Coast cycling route, which stretches from Whitehaven on the west coast to Tynemouth or Sunderland on the East coast.
The Lake District National Park is England's largest National Park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Needless to say, it is a dream spot if you adore outdoor pursuits. From ambling to rambling, hiking to trekking, climbing to abseiling, paddleboarding to canoeing, it really offers it all! Come prepared though, we would not be the lake district without rain! So make sure you pack waterproofs & an umbrella!
The Space
Although a simple cottage, our home is deceptively spacious. You will access the house down an unpaved farm track that leads into a small private road.
There are 2 allocated parking places . You will enter the property via a gravel area and enclosed patio. There are few shallow steps to the property.
The conservatory leads to a terraced area & fenced garden. This is usually the domain of our cats. If you like our feline friends and don't mind feeding them twice per day, that would be purrrfect. If not, they will go on a little vacation of their own.
On the ground floor, you will find a cloakroom, and a reception room which leads to the light & airy modern kitchen.
The lounge has 2 sofas, an electric stove fire, some vintage pieces of furniture, and a modern Frame TV where you can access all the usual online streaming platforms.
Upstairs, there is a master bedroom with a king size bed, wardrobes, a little reading area and a wall-mounted TV. Better still, is the pretty view from the windows over the fields. Forget the TV, the small selection of farm animals provide all the entertainment you need!
The guest bedroom has a double bed, wardrobe, side tables and a flar-screen smart TV. It is a very peaceful room with a pleasant view to the terraced garden.
Leading off the guest bedroom is a study. However, it can be used as another bedroom (it has a single sofa bed), or it can be used as a chill-out room or playroom.
The family bathroom with large walk in shower is located on this level too. (There is no bath in the property, but if you require a baby bath, let us know.)
Outside the front of the property is a lawn that leads to a raised deck; this has a wonderful view out to the Irish sea on a clear day and to spectacular sunsets on summer evenings .
Guest Access
Ground floor and first floor.
There are steps to the property and a terrace to the rear. There are stairs to the first floor.
You will have full access to our cottage and 2 parking spaces.
We are located on a tiny road and each cottage has allocated parking which we are all respectful of.
A key will be stored in a key-safe and we will forward the combination.
Notes
Because we are located alongside a small working farm, you can expect the usual sounds and sometimes healthy aromas that come with farming! 😀
A car is essential as there is no public transport to our neighbourhood.
Away from the main roads, much of the surrounding countryside has narrow, windy roads, often single car width with regular passing places. So go steady, especially if you are in a hire car! 🚗

Neighbourhood
Our neighbourhood is semi-rural, quiet and peaceful. There is no public transport in our hamlet.
There are various public footpaths, one is directly outside our front door.
Local amenities in Whitehaven are just a 5 minute drive away:
Train station, 5 supermarkets, petrol stations, ATMs. pharmacies, etc. West Cumberland Hospital, with an A& E dept, is just 2 miles up the hill.
When driving locally, you may experience cows crossing the road for milking! All you can do is switch off the engine, enjoy the spectacle and be patient 😊

Getting Around
We live a secluded area, but there is so much to explore in the vicinity:
The coastal villages of St Bees, Seascale, and Ravenglass are a few miles to the south. The historic town of Maryport (14 miles to the north) is a hive of activity. It has an aquarium, an art gallery, and interesting Roman connections. All of these places are also accessible on the regional train line.
Set on the river Cocker, is the market town of Cockermouth, which is 20 mins by car. Have a stroll along the river, with lots of exqusite rambling routes to explore. Or browse a nice variety of local artisan shops, or have a break in the local coffee shops or eateries.
Cockermouth is the birthplace of the Romantic poet, William Wordsworth. You can visit his former home and gardens on the Main Street. He later resided in Grasmere, where you can visit the home he shared with his sister (Dove Cottage), as well as a purpose built museum.
There are countless quaint villages that you will pass through as you drive or cycle around the area, most with a traditional pub to tempt you to do a quick pit-stop!
Keswick is a popular tourist spot (35 mins by car). On the way, you will pass Bassenthwaite. The old railway station is worth a visit, book afternoon tea on an original railway carriage. Also, look out for Lingholm Estate, gardens and Kitchen, near Nichol End.
We love the quieter places like Buttermere, Crummock and Loweswater. A regular haunt of ours is the village of Ennerdale Bridge, with its wonderful community cafe, The Gather. There are a couple of pubs which serve food, a lovely church and a river. You can walk or drive to Ennerdale Water (park at Bleach Green for free parking). It is possible to walk around the water in 2 to 3 hours. Half of it is a path, the other half is natural terrain.
Further afield, near Windermere, is the former home Beatrice Potter, Hill Top House. If you or your children have read her Tales of Peter Rabbit (and others), this place was her solace and source of inspiration.
Of course, the area has a rich history too: find out about the influence of the Lowther family in Whitehaven. Or explore our rich but treacherous mining industry that provided an income for the vast majority of working people in the area, but sadly also took many lives.
Check out Whitehaven and Maryport's impressive shipping industry with links to the White Star Line.
Travel one hour north to the border city of Carlisle and visit the castle and Tullie House Museum. There is also an archaeological Roman site that is currently being escavated - I believe you can volunteer to help!
Trace the steps of the Romans with a trip to Hadrian's Wall, dating back to AD 122!
West Cumbria is easily accessible Wasdsle (for Scafell Pike). It's a great place to visit, even if you don't intend to scale Scafell. Fun fact: it has the deepest water, the smallest church, and the highest peak in England!

Gill & Rich
We are Gill & Rich and we are looking forward to this new & exciting way to travel through PLU.
I'm a secondary school teacher in a local school. Teaching is incredibly rewarding but life is non-stop during term-time, so we cherish relaxing time away. Rich is a gas engineer. He works with the family business but was previously in the Royal Navy.
We are child free , commitment free (well, at least in school holidays !) and we like to think of ourselves as care free!
We love our home. I have the creative ideas and Rich can do all of the practical things to make them a reality!
We would love you to enjoy our home and get to know the beautiful western lake district and Solway coast. It can be stunning in its tranquility and wildness in equal measure!
In return, we would respect & care for your place as if it were our own.
We are open to any suggestions, so please reach out and see where it takes us!
