General Overview
Blue Pine Retreat is a family--and dog--friendly home designed specifically for families looking for a comfortable place to relax--whether you are exploring Yosemite, playing on Bass Lake, or just looking for a getaway from your daily life!
Nestled in the Sierra National forest located just 12 miles to the south gate of Yosemite National Park and just minutes away from Bass Lake.
Our home is located in the sweet mountain community of SkyView Ranch off highway 41 surrounded by soaring ponderosa pines, cedar, white oak and stunning red manzanita trees.
Our Story
The seeds for the Blue Pine Retreat were planted 30 years ago in a beautiful bed and breakfast with a blue door in Del Mar, California and a log cabin in Lake Tahoe, both homes built by my grandfathers. Growing up, our family made memories exploring the beaches and canyons of Del Mar, hiking the forests around Lake Tahoe and floating down the Truckee River. We held family reunions, brought friends and later our spouses and children. But as time passed, the homes were sold and we began looking for a new place to build family memories. On a summer afternoon, we drove past the blue waters of Bass Lake and through the forests of the Sierras and knew we’d found our place. Hopefully, this will be your place too.
The Space
Built in 1977, Blue Pine Retreat is a 4 bedroom/2.5 bath with some upgrades in the last few years including laminate and tile flooring, granite counter tops in the kitchen and baths and dual pane windows.
When you first step in the 2-Story Cabin, the original wood staircase and interior will take your breath away!
Tastefully updated with all the modern amenities needed for a getaway in the woods. This cabin features new appliances, beautifully colorful and quirky vintage furniture & art and comfy beds all while retaining its original charm!
Our kitchen has everything you need--from a coffee maker, toaster and waffle maker for delicious breakfasts to an Instant Pot, barbecue and rice cooker for cozy dinners after your day’s adventure!
Relax on our plush L shaped couch and comfy chairs in front of the fire, play games or watch your favorite movies on our flat screen tv in our open floor plan living room.
Our library is stocked with books, puzzles, games and dvds for you to enjoy during your stay. Find a book you really like? Take it with you! Finish a book while you were here? Feel free to add it to our shelf. But please leave the DVDs, puzzles and games for others to enjoy.
In addition, our kids bunk room comes complete with childrens books, wooden blocks, Duplo Legos and a train set, as well as a TV with Roku--perfect for a kids’ movie night!
Both TVs are connected to Roku sound bars and have access to Netflix, Amazon Prime and Plex--our digital home media collection of over 1000 movies for you to enjoy. We also have a high chair and a pack and play (located in the downstairs guest room closet) for your littlest adventurer!
Did you bring your favorite furry pooch? Great! We have dog dishes, poop bags and a dog crate at your disposal. We also have Folex and laundry detergent for any unexpected accidents. Please make sure your dog stays in the crate when you are gone and don’t forget to scoop their poop!
Some quick vintage cabin facts; Blue Pine Retreat is lovingly maintained but is not a new home build. The kitchen is small but sweet with all modern appliances (electric stove/oven, fridge, microwave and dishwasher) and fully equipped with all the pots, pans, utensils & dining ware needed to make a fabulous at home meal and coffee machine to get your mornings started. The wood stove is the main source of heat in the winter--check the refrigerator for step-by-step fire starting directions!
For those extra chilly nights, there is an additional space heater for your comfort. She’s cute and modernized, but still old and quirky.
The main downstairs bedroom features a twin daybed with a twin trundle underneath, luxury white sheets, duvets, and pillows. The other downstairs bedroom has two separate twin beds and a private half bath.
The upper level main bedroom features a queen bed with a beautiful 4 post wooden frame, entrance to the patio, and an en suite master bathroom. There is also another bedroom with a queen bed with a custom-built wooden headboard. A full bathroom with double sinks in the hallway to accommodate everyone's needs.
The outside deck features a dining table with seating for 6. The deck wraps around to the front where you can sit and enjoy libations at the wooden adirondack style chairs. There's even a gate to enclose the front deck to keep curious children and dogs where you want them! On any given day you may catch a guest appearance by the neighborhood’s local flock of wild turkey, herd of deer and native birds.
Guest Access
Blue Pine Retreat is a two floor structure and sleeps 8 people. In addition, there is a pack and play available in the downstairs guest closet for our youngest guests.
Guests will access the house using a door code on the keyless entry--no pesky keys to lose!
The driveway has two entrances with ample parking. Word to the wise: use the left entrance to come and go.
The house is popular among guests for easy-in and easy-out to Highway 41, 15 miles from Yosemite South Gate. City center is only 8-10 min drive on the other direction. Fork out at Rt 222 and Bass Lake Recreation Area is only 5 min drive.
Notes
In addition to Yosemite and Bass Lake, there’s also Nelder Grove (7 miles away), Lewis Creek Trail, (which leads to Red Rock & Corlieu Falls), and Angel Falls (a summer fav), and The Snowline Saloon for dining, libations, and live music. Also nearby is Nelder Creek, which is great for some local fishing or a summer dip. The town of Oakhurst is only 10 minutes away. The cute town of Mariposa--with more restaurants and breweries is only 30 minutes away.

Neighbourhood
The Sky View Ranch neighborhood is a quiet residential area nestled among the trees at the edge of the Sierra National Forest. While there are no sidewalks, the streets are well paved and perfect for a brisk morning walk.
The quaint mountain town of Oakhurst is only a quick 10 minute drive away. While Oakhurst is small, it is mighty boasting two major grocery stores, a variety of excellent restaurants (including Elderberry--a Michelin star rated restaurant!), locally owned shops and the city park. Check the signs out in town to find out what is going on! Oakhurst often has craft fairs, farmer's markets and art shows--they even have a thriving theater with performances year round.

Brian & Meghan Orth are Rotarians that live in the SF Bay area, with a vacation home just outside Yosemite. We love to share our home away from home and are happy to give some tips and tricks we have learned about the Yosemite area!
We like to say we travel on our stomachs, and are always interested in finding new destinations with the local fare in mind. We want to travel the world one adventure--and one delicious meal--at a time!
When we are not traveling or staying at our vacation home, we live with our two daughters and three dogs in the San Francisco Bay Area. We love eating out (of course), but also cooking with family, exploring the beautiful nature and city around us and giving back to our community.
People Like Us is the world's most trusted home exchange community. We believe in sharing, trust, generosity, respect, communication, equality, cooperation, honesty, hospitality, friendship, flexibility and adventure. We take pride in our homes and we care about the environment in which we live: our village, city, country and our planet. We care about the ethos of home exchange and we do it because we love the experience and the friendships that it generates.
