Hospitality
Hospitality Description: If we are here you are welcome to stay and have use of the main bedroom (1 double bed, there is room on the floor for a small mattress or cot), kitchen, living room, garden etc. Elli uses the single bedroom for work 3 days/week (9-5.30, Thursday, Friday & Saturday), though you may still use that if you feel comfortable with this, or we can discuss moving my work computer for a while depending on the stay.
You are welcome to join us for meals, walks, family board games, and general family life, or just use the space - our home is your home.

General Overview
The house is a comfortable, 3-bed in a lovely village, with views to the hills and easy access to the Lake District and north Pennines for outdoor activities. There is also a welcoming and active local home ed community.
The Space
Downstairs:
- Comfy living room with sofa, an eclectic book collection, plenty of borad games, and a coal/multi-fuel stove.
- Spacious, fully-equipped kitchen (by UK standard!), with plenty of space to cook as well as sit and eat or socialise. We do eat all of the foods, so although we clean well, we cannot guarantee it is free of any allergens.
- Small WC
- Boot room/coat cupboard
- Utility room (washing machine)
Upstairs:
- Family bathroom with bath and shower over, basin and WC
- Main double bedroom with double bed, handing rail, and drawers.
- Bedroom 2 with single-to-king pullout bed, drawers.
- Bedroom 3 with single bed, and also desk space with ethernet cable connection for superfast internet connection (the property has wifi, but I use a remote server for work and internet based calls).
Outside there is a garden with parking space for 1 or 2 vehicles, a garage for storage, veg patch, lawn and patio area.
*Please note: Our home is not particularly toddler-friendly, and the garden has a pond and beehive, with no fence/gate between the garden and the green then road outside. Please feel free to ask about this, and we may be able to help.
Notes
There is beehive in the garden, and it is accessible to small hands. The bees pay no attention to humans in the garden, but small, inquisitive hands, and those with allergies, may need to take care.

Neighbourhood
Our village is relatively small, with a C of E church and small shop/post office for essentials that is open daily. There is a small recreation ground about a 5-10 minute walk away with slide, swings etc.
The nearest supermarket, pool, gym etc is about a 15-minute drive away in either Penrith or Appleby. There is a doctors' surgery in the next village (about 2 miles).
From the house you can walk straight out over the coutnryside, and this is one of the things we love most about it. One of the maps in the living room is centered on the house, and shows all the local footpaths.
Further afield there are the beautiful hills of the north Pennines and the Lake District for hiking and wild camping, the lakes are also great for wild swimming and climbing/bouldering. There are nearby Norman castles in Penrith, Eamont, Appleby, Burgh and Barnard Castle, plus it's an easy day trip to Hadrian's Wall and Vindolanda, Carlisle, or even the wonderful Beamish Living History Museum near Newcastle.
Getting to my home
Our home is rural, and getting here is easiest by car, though there is a bus route.
Internationally we are about equal distance from Manchester, Newcastle, Glasgow and Edinburgh airports, with Manchester having the best international connections. There is a direct train from Manchester Airport to Penrith, 7 miles away where there is a Europcar depot.
There are also trains direct to Penrith from London Euston station, and from Glasgow and Edinburgh Waverley.
Due to the rural location a car is the best way to get around locally, though there is a bus service along the main road a few times a day. There is a Europcar hire depot with car club in Penrith (nearest town).
Getting into the Lake District if you don't want to drive and worry about small roads or parking, this can be done by bus from Penrith with day tickets currently set at £2 per person.
In the other direction, Appleby-in-Westmorland is on the historic Settle-Carlisle railway line.

People Like Us Local Guide
We would love to meet people travelling to our area. We are happy to meet for or guide hikes, visits to sites, or just for a play with the kids at a local park or for a coffee (dependent of if kiddo can come along).
For the more adventurous, Kelvin is always looking for a climbing buddy - Gen loves climbing but can't hold his weight on a belay yet!
House Mawer consists of 2 mostly responsible adults, Kelvin and Elli, plus one small human (Gen), 1 ridiculous dog (Sully), and one quite nervous cat (Nancy).
Between us our hobbies include climbing, swimming, early medieval reenactment/living history, knitting, hiking, tabletop games, and food (cooking and eating!).
We home educate from our house in the north of England. Elli has a job in travel, and Kelvin works for the police force (so has enhanced DBS check). Although Elli works in travel we don't get to explore as much as we might like to, and are looking forward to changing that in the next few years.
We firmly believe that all humans are valid humans, and that the amazing variety of the human experience it what makes it so wonderful.
People Like Us is the world's most trusted home exchange community. We believe in sharing, trust, generosity, respect, communication, equality, cooperation, honesty, hospitality, friendship, flexibility and adventure. We take pride in our homes and we care about the environment in which we live: our village, city, country and our planet. We care about the ethos of home exchange and we do it because we love the experience and the friendships that it generates.
