General Overview

My house is in Dartmouth, which is across the harbour from Halifax, the slightly more known city. Dartmouth is part of Halifax Regional Municipality. I love my house in the summer - it's near trails and lakes but has the amenities of a city (e.g., public transit, walkable grocery store, restaurants, gym). It has a back deck that gets plenty of sun and it is located fairly centrally. Once the trees fill in, it looks like you live in a tree house. You can walk to 3 different lakes that are swimmable. At the same time, you can also walk 5 minutes to the bus stop that will take you downtown Dartmouth. From there, another 7 minute ferry will take you to downtown Halifax, so you can explore the other side of the harbour just as easily. My house isn't huge but it does have 3 bedrooms and 1 smaller room that I use as an office so it can sleep up to 5 people comfortably. We have two bikes, boogie boards, a stand up paddle board, and camping gear that you are able to use.

The Space

The house is set up with 3 bedrooms - 2 are upstairs and 1 is in the basement. There is another room upstairs that is set up as an office. There are two full bathrooms in the house - one has a tub/shower and the other has a shower only. There is a living room, kitchen, and dining room that walks out onto a patio. In the summer, it is really nice to sit outside for meals. There is a driveway that could park up to 3 cars, if needed, but no garage. The space has 3 heat pumps, one on each level, which also acts as the AC in the summer, although AC is rarely needed here in the summer. A breeze always seems to cool things down enough in the evenings. :)

Guest Access

There are 3 floors including the basement. You would have access to all 3 floors.

Notes

This is a non-smoking, pet-free, and shoe-free house. A few plants to water. :) As a side note and more importantly for hospitality stays, the bedroom in the basement is "semi-private" - it is only separated from the laundry area by a divider only. The door to the basement from upstairs does not lock but we rarely go down except to do laundry, and we would communicate with you about that. There is a separate outside entrance to the basement that I can give you the key to use, if you'd prefer. You would have your own bathroom downstairs but you'd be sharing the kitchen and living space with us upstairs. Cleaning can be negotiated. If you want to do the cleaning yourself including washing the sheets and remaking the bed, then that’s a possibility. Otherwise, the cleaning fee is $150.

Neighbourhood

I live in the Dartmouth, known as the city of Lakes! There are 3 lakes near me that are walking distance. I love walking down to the lakes for a swim in the summer. There is a gym, grocery store, and a few restaurants all within walking distance as well. You can even walk downtown Dartmouth in 25-30 minutes or there are bus stops nearby if you don't have a car. You will find the ferry terminal downtown which will take you to Halifax, the other side of the harbour where there are more restaurants and bars to discover. Alderney ferry terminal also has farmer’s markets on Wednesdays and the weekends. If you have a car, you are only 15 minutes away from Rainbow Haven, a favourite beach for many families. And if you drive a little further, you will reach Lawrencetown, Martinique, and Clam Harbour beaches dotted along the way all within an hour. Lawrencetown and Martinique are well known for surfing and kitesurfing. My personal favourite but the furthest is Clam Harbour - great waves and lots of space for families with kids young and old. There are also plenty of good trails within 10 minutes to an hour - easy to difficult - for hiking, walking, and biking.

Getting to my home

You can get from the Halifax Airport to my house in 20-25 minutes driving. There is also a bus that runs once an hour that will take you in from the airport. Ubers and cabs are also available.

Getting Around

There is public transit including buses and a ferry. Some things are walkable like a big grocery store, convenience store, parks, gym, restaurants, a few shops, and 25 minutes to downtown Dartmouth. I am willing to chat about use of my car but it wouldn't be able to go far, as I have a mileage limit.

Lynn

We are a family of 5. My partner and I are both in our 40s and we have children currently aged 9, 11, and 13. While we often travel together, sometimes I do travel with just my 9-year old. We are adventurous, active, and love beaches/lakes. We like hiking, skiing, swimming, surfing, paddling, camping, and all things outdoors. We are happy to recommend our favourite hikes and beaches, if you find yourself in Nova Scotia. I used to be a couchsurfer in my youth, and have hosted many travellers, and stayed with many hosts myself so home exchange feels like the adult version of that! Our kids are in French immersion and I'm actively learning French, so we can try to communicate in French if needed. Otherwise, we are anglophones. :) We tend to travel during school holidays - so that would be usually the last couple weeks of December, mid-March, and July/August but we could be tempted to travel outside of these times. :)
