What a wonderful exchange my best friend and I had with Karolina! Her home is very beautiful, a spacious and light-filled duplex apartment, decorated very artistically, in a green and quiet neighbourhood with quick and easy access to Gdansk Old Town and shipyards, and good transport links to nearby seaside places like Sopot and the lovely beach at Brzezno too. Bolt and Uber taxis are very cheap for getting around as well.
The apartment was very comfortable and clean, with a nice small balcony for sitting out in the mornings and evenings. Karolina and her partner Mario are delightful and charming hosts, and all prior communications were good (and funny!). They greeted us so warmly and left us a very welcome pack of bread, cheese, milk, salad and wine, Karolina even got decaffeinated coffee for my tricky stomach, which I don't think was easy in Poland! They have three adorable house cats that we were more than happy to look after during our stay (following clear instructions, which were very helpful!). They also gave us lots of useful information and recommendations for our visit - we only wish we had had time to follow all of them up!
Gdansk is a beautiful and fascinating city to visit - I think most people outside of Poland don't think of it as a destination, but it really is well worth going to see. We very much enjoyed wandering round the Old Town, reconstructed after the war but in keeping with its medieval origins - the churches are impressive, and filled with very beautiful modern artworks - the most spectacular is the Amber Altar in St Brigid's Church, St Mary's Basilica (the largest brick-built church in Europe) is also a must-see, and we attended a wonderful free organ and flute concert in St Nicholas' Church one evening.
The Amber Museum is also very impressive indeed, and very informative, it covers the whole story of amber, from the natural history of how it was formed in prehistoric eras to its many uses, and the role of Gdansk in producing master craftsmen of amber. There are stunning pieces of natural amber, antique objects made from amber, and stunning displays of modernist amber jewellery. We didn't have kids with us, but the museum is very child friendly, with interactive displays, cartoon videos for learning about amber, and hands-on activities. The shop has very lovely jewellery which is guaranteed authentic and seemed better quality than pieces we saw in the other amber shops and stalls.
We had a very special day at the Gdansk shipyards and the European Solidarity Museum, which is one of the best museums I've ever visited. Allow plenty of time to visit, there is so much to see and read about the history of Solidarnosc, the movement for free trade unions and democracy in Poland, whose hub was at the shipyards in Gdansk. It was quite emotional. The building itself is a masterpiece of modern architecture, and the view from the rooftop garden is wonderful, especially of the iconic cranes which are one of the main symbols of the city today. Don't miss the Castaways sculptures at the waterside of the shipyards either!
We had another day wandering around Gdansk Lower Town - not much visited by tourists, but this area of formerly well-to-do 19th century architecture is now a quiet haven of faded grandeur, street art, and very nice boho cafes in an old munitions factory. One evening we went to Brzezno beach to watch the sunset, another less touristy place that was very nice indeed. We also had a day out to Oliwa to see the Cathedral (another magnificent free organ concert) and gardens, then on to Sopot and its beach and bars - very calm and relaxed even in the high season. We are only sorry we didn't have longer to see more of Gdansk and the surrounding area.
We are so grateful to Karolina for sharing her home with us, it is the perfect place to stay to visit the very pleasant and surprising city of Gdansk, and she is the perfect exchange partner! I really look forward to helping her and her family plan their reciprocal trip to Morocco, and hope we might also be able to welcome them there in person.
