General Overview
I absolutely love living in Torrox, and so many things make my home here feel special. For starters, Torrox is famous for having “the best climate in Europe,” which is not just an empty brag—it spoils you with sunshine and mild temperatures almost year-round. Mornings are so pleasant that I can sip my coffee on the balcony while the sun peeks over the mountains, and there’s a crispness in the air that makes me feel awake and alive.
One thing that stands out is how traditionally Andalusian the whole place feels. Torrox has kept its authentic Spanish charm, from the narrow cobblestone streets to the whitewashed houses with terracotta roofs. There’s this enchanting blend of Moorish heritage and modern life, and my home is nestled right in that balance. Step out my front door, and I can walk down little alleys lined with potted geraniums or pop over to a local café for a perfectly sweet churro and a café con leche.
I’m also a massive fan of everything being within easy reach. The beach is just a few minutes away, so an afternoon dip in the Mediterranean can happen on a whim. If you’re up for some adventure, you can explore hiking trails in the nearby Sierras, where you’ll find breathtaking coastline views. It’s the perfect balance: the calm of a traditional Spanish village paired with the excitement of nature right at your doorstep.
Finally, I’d say the food culture here is a significant bonus. Being close to the sea means you get incredibly fresh seafood at the chiringuitos (beach bars), and local markets offer lovely produce straight from nearby farms. The tapas tradition is alive and well, so my evenings often involve sampling a variety of small dishes accompanied by a refreshing tinto de verano or a crisp white wine.
All those little details—sunshine, friendly faces, a dash of history, fresh local food, and a comforting sense of timelessness—make Torrox a truly special place to call home. It’s the spot that feels authentic and alive, reminding me daily that I’m in the heart of a beautiful and welcoming corner of Spain.

Notes
Torrox is a municipality in the province of Málaga in the autonomous community of Andalusia, southern Spain. It belongs to the region of Axarquía. It is located in the Costa del Sol, on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea and the foothills of the Sierra de Almijara.
The city itself is divided into sections: Torrox Costa on the sea and Torrox Pueblo, 4 km inland. Torrox Park, a housing section in between the costa and the village, could be seen as another division. Torrox is located in close proximity to Nerja.
Axarquía is a region of Andalusia in southern Spain. It is the wedge-shaped area east of Málaga. It extends along the coast and inland. Its coastal towns make up the Costa del Sol Oriental - one of the sunniest places in mainland Spain with the average of 320 sunny days a year. The natives of the region are called axárquicos.
The region is composed of 31 municipalities, of which the capital is Vélez-Málaga. The Vélez, Algarrobo and Torrox rivers all run through the region.

Neighbourhood
The community vibe is another big draw. Everyone here is genuinely warm and welcoming—neighbours still greet each other with a friendly “¡Hola!” and aren’t shy about inviting you in for a quick glass of vino or a homemade tapa. There’s a real sense of belonging; it’s easy to get to know the people around you and feel like you’re part of the local family.
Getting to my home
Getting from Málaga Airport to Torrox is generally pretty smooth, and you’ve got a few options to suit your style and budget:
By Car
The Drive: Renting a car at Málaga Airport is a popular choice if you want to explore on your schedule. It’s a roughly 40-minute drive along the Autovía del Mediterráneo (A-7) heading east. The route is quite scenic, with the Mediterranean on one side and rolling hills or mountains on the other—if you’re lucky, you’ll catch some fantastic sea views.
Road Conditions: Spanish highways are generally well-maintained so that you won’t be white-knuckling it. Remember that drivers can be a little fast, so stay alert and keep an eye on the speed limit.
By Taxi or Rideshare
Convenience Factor: A taxi or rideshare is a door-to-door solution if you're not keen on driving. While it can be pricier than the bus, it’s pretty relaxing. Taxis from Málaga Airport to Torrox usually cost a set fee, which you can check in advance.
By Bus
The Basics: This is a budget-friendly option that is still quite convenient. You’ll first need to get from the airport to Málaga’s central bus station (Estación de Autobuses de Málaga). That typically involves a quick ride on the local bus (Line A) or a short train ride to Málaga’s María Zambrano station, both of which are easy to navigate.
Bus from Málaga to Torrox: Buses to Torrox are run by companies like ALSA and are generally comfortable with air conditioning. The journey is around an hour or so, and you’ll be dropped off either in Torrox Costa or Torrox Pueblo, depending on the route. From there, you might need a quick taxi to your final destination if you’re staying in the village centre.
Whichever route you choose, the distance isn’t far, and you’ll soon find yourself soaking in that laid-back Andalusian vibe in Torrox—complete with sea breezes, whitewashed streets, and plenty of sunshine.
Enjoy the journey!
Nearest airport
The distance from Málaga Airport (AGP) to Torrox is roughly 60–65 kilometers (about 37–40 miles), depending on your exact route. It usually takes around 40–50 minutes by car, traffic permitting.
Getting Around
In Torrox, you’ll find that most basic amenities—like small grocery stores, bakeries, and cafés—are within walking distance, especially if you’re staying in or near the village center. If you’re closer to Torrox Costa, you can also walk or bike to shops, pharmacies, or even the promenade by the beach. For larger supermarkets or a wider selection of stores, there are bigger shopping areas just a short drive or bus ride away (Nerja and Torre del Mar are popular spots for more variety).
When it comes to public transport, local buses run regularly between Torrox Pueblo (the village) and Torrox Costa, with connections on to nearby towns like Nerja and Vélez-Málaga. From there, you can catch regional buses to Málaga City or other coastal destinations. If you don’t feel like driving, it’s usually not hard to hop on a bus or flag down a taxi for longer trips.
Andrew was very easy to communicate with & gave us lots of ideas of things to do in the area.
As a consequence we did lots of day trips & really, really enjoyed the region. Equally we enjoyed to walk around the village & enjoy the local vibe
Torrox Pueblo is a great place to be based, a ‘real life’ Spanish village without the influence of tourists.
We were lucky to be here for the Halloween Festivities- a truly magical experience in the square - children’s activities early, followed by live music & dancing til the small hours for adults.Fabulous! The locals welcomed us in. There are frequent similar festivities throughout the year
The flat was perfectly located, newly renovated, spotlessly clean, very well equipped & provisioned for our arrival (which we really appreciated)
Thank you for this wonderful exchange, it’s been a special highlight of our 10 week European tour holiday.
We already have plans to return as it’s such a great place!!

- A Memorable and Special Home Exchange in Torrox -
We had such a wonderful time staying in this unique and charming home in Torrox for 2 weeks this past July, and we are SO grateful for the experience. From start to finish, Andrew & Seth were everything you’d hope for in a home exchange host - kind, responsive, and genuinely committed to making our stay enjoyable.
When the fridge unexpectedly stopped working, they didn’t miss a beat and had a new one delivered the next day with the help of a neighbor. That kind of attention and care meant a lot to us.
The character, charm, and stunning setting of the home - right in the middle of a pueblo blanco, next to a beautiful church - was like a dream. We enjoyed sipping a glass of wine on the terrace in the evenings, surrounded by the glow of the town lights up in the mountains overlooking the Mediterranean. The town square is just a few steps away, where the community gathers to dine & drink & socialize - and in the evenings there are often live flamenco music shows open to the public. You can wander the winding streets and stumble upon cute cats, gelato, art installations, old castle walls, and smiling neighbors. Torrox boasts "el mejor clima de Europe," and did not feel touristy at all (especially compared to nearby towns like Nerja & Malaga), truly a hidden gem.
I recommend visiting nearby:
- the Caves of Nerja
- Kayaking the waterfall of Nerja
- Day trips to Malaga, Grenada, La Herradura
- Hike down the cliffs to Playa Maro
A couple of notes on logistics:
- There is no air conditioning, but with the fans on & windows open it was tolerable even during the July heat wave.
- Parking is on the outskirts of town, so you park in a big lot and walk in about 5-10 minutes up to the home.
Their "pay it forward" philosophy shines through in every detail, and we felt lucky for the opportunity to experience what life is like on the Mediterranean coast. We highly recommend Andrew & Seth's home to anyone looking to truly experience España auténtica.
Just the sort of interesting and interested PLU's you would hope to host. Andrew and Seth were great guests and we very much enjoyed their time here.
It looks like we may have (inadvertently) converted another exchange in to future residents of the Cook Islands!
Andrew was very easy & a pleasure to communicate with.
He enjoyed his stay in the Apartment & left it in very clean & tidy condition.
It was a pleasure to have him & partner stay & we would be very happy if they would like to stay again.
We have no hesitation in recommending them to all other PLU hosts who are seeking careful, considerate guests
Regards
Beverley
We had a fantastic stay at this Yallingup home. The place is peaceful and beautifully set on a big piece of land. It gives you that “away from it all” feeling while still being close to stunning beaches, wineries, and Dunsborough.
The house itself is spacious, comfortable, and really well laid out. The living area is perfect for relaxing, and the separate bedroom wings make it great for families or groups.
The property is full of charm. You wake up to views toward the lakes and often spot kangaroos and birds wandering through. It’s the kind of place where you instantly slow down and feel at ease.
Overall, it was a wonderful stay. I’d happily recommend it to any PLU members looking for a relaxing and memorable break in the south-west.
The beauty of the PLU network is the chance to meet genuinely wonderful people who often become lifelong friends. Ben and Beverley were exceptional guests. They were kind, considerate, and easy to communicate with, and they treated our home with great care and respect. If any minor issues came up, they let us know right away, which was incredibly helpful and appreciated. I’d happily recommend Ben and Bev to any PLU member looking to exchange.
Thank you very much for your feedback.
We loved our stay in your wonderful place, tucked away from tourists in real Spain - such as treat!
We had the pleasure of connecting with Sheila and her partner, James, for some time before our home exchange, and everything went beautifully from start to finish. The entire arrangement was smooth and effortless, and we were delighted by the care and respect they showed our home—treating it as if it were their own. It sounds like they had a wonderful time exploring Torrox, Spain, and truly made the most of their stay. We’d be very happy to host or exchange with them again in the future!
Seth and I would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Brent and Eve for their incredible hospitality and the stunning location they have in Rarotonga. The unit we stayed in was simply the best, truly feeling like a home away from home. It was conveniently close to the swimming lagoon and many other attractions. We cherished our final meal together and gained so much knowledge about the Cook Islands. We are genuinely grateful for this wonderful opportunity!
We just wrapped up our exchange with Rachael and her wonderful family. From the beginning, our conversations have been open and friendly, making the arrangements a breeze. We ensured that Rachael and her family had easy access to the property and promptly addressed a few minor issues that arose. I wholeheartedly recommend Rachael and her family for any future exchanges!
We had a fantastic stay at this beautiful property. The stunning sea views, easy beach access, and closeness to local attractions made us feel at home immediately. Beverley was wonderful to deal with, making the arrival process seamless and stress-free. I would highly recommend this home to other PLU members—it’s a perfect spot to relax and explore the area!
