Hospitality Description: This is no longer my primary residence- it's not a "mainstream" kind of a dwelling... though people like us may have an appreciation for its uniqueness. I'm open to long/short term stays and possibly exchange though I'm pretty busy running courses here in Bali, also Kenya and Costa Rica. Open to work exchanges also as bamboo needs ongoing maintenance.

General Overview
If you want to experience the less touristy side of Bali, but still be close to the beach, nightlife and fantastic food, then look no further... Our bamboo home is right in the heart of Padangsambian (which you've probbly never heard of if you're not local) in close proximity to Seminyak beach, local market, western supermarket, Australian Internasional School, ricefield walking track along the river and next door to a kids charity: Bali Street kids project.
The Space
Simple affordable bamboo design and .eco-conscious living with upcycled materials and ecobrick policy for plastic waste with a naturally cool grass roof.
On the third floor we have a dorm-type main bedroom with 4 single bunks and 1 double bed - all with mosquito nets.. There is a day bed/guest bed downstairs in the lounge/dining/kitchen. The kitchen is simple with a gas cooktop, and most things you would need to prepare a meal; fridge and water dispenser. Bathroom is downstairs in the lower level as there's no insulation in a bamboo house. Fast internet. Very comfortable and quiet. The surrounding local area is friendly and safe. Our street is narrow but is quite easy to get picked up and dropped off with car/taxi. We have off-street parking and lockable front gate, CCTV and lockable storage. Easily accessible via Gojek/Grab. 15-20 min to the beach by bike. The house is not presently wheelchair accessible.
Guest Access
Guests can use the whole house and upstairs main room. I occasionally come by the house to check on things (once every week or two unless I'm overseas). We have a small workshop and tools and materials for making things... bamboo jewellery is one of our favourites (i can organise a workshop if you'd like to learn a bit of bamboo craft) and we do have a pizza oven downstairs which i can introduce you to.
Notes
We live in a local neighbourhood and some aspects may be a culture shock.... like ordering water by the galon; bucket showers, loud motorbikes... it's a different vibe to the touristy areas - i much prefer it as people smile more and don't just want your money 😅 There is a bit of trash/ garbage around - especially in the river... its not like the pictures of Bali you see on tv/magazines- but it's authentic :-)
I would prefer longer stayers like 1-2 months. Housekeeper available who can prepare meals and do shopping etc.

Hey, I'm an Australian living in Bali now... I built a bamboo house in the rice field area behind Seminyak for my daughter who has intellectual disability in 2017 as a social inclusion project - where she and myself could have better community connection and where I could have support in looking after her... think Energiser battery plus 10.
Previously while spending time in the Philippines living with local families and helping make some small livelihood projects, I observied and started learning bamboo skills, I was perplexed as to why people were reluctant to build their homes with bamboo. This experience ignited my personal drive to raise awareness and share skills about bamboo treatment methods and building, and to make it more affordable, accessible, and attractive. I envision regenerative villages where natural farming and building are part of life and am working on establishing cooperative systems whereby families/ individuals can learn building and crafting with bamboo while developing Eco- community projects at the village level.
I host bamboo building courses with local Balinese craftsmen and am based now at gianyar near ubud. My house is in Denpasar but I dont get to spend much time there these days. My daughter is now living in Australia and I'm busily working towards enabling her to spend time with me and a model of support for parents of people with disabilities whereby they can feel supported and included and have a rockin time making things and connecting in community. I'm also hopping to Africa sharing bamboo skills there and networking to share this concept and model for regenerative lifelong learning.... would love to swap in September October in Naivasha area of Nairobi and or Kericho.
