Hospitality
Hospitality Description: We are very flexible, friendly and open minded people. We have traveled a lot, stayed and hosted a lot with Couchsurfing, Warmshowers and Airbnb.
You can either have your separate small apartment in the same courtyard (so we will be like neighbors) or you can stay in the same apartment with us. Just drop us a line and we can discuss the details. ;) We like to share good times with people from all around the world, but we do understand if you want time on your own as well.
If we are not at home during your visit, that is also okay, we can give you instructions and you can always call us if you will have questions.

General overview
We live in Zugló, a charming district of Budapest, known for its green spaces and proximity to the city center. Our home is a spacious 238-square-meter house with a garden, consisting of three apartments.
Our family occupies the 160-square-meter apartment, spread over two stories. It’s a lively home for me, my wife, our three children (born in 2018, 2020, and 2022), and their grandma, Aunt Katy (born 1944). The ground floor features a cozy living room filled with toys, a sofa bed, a kitchen, and a small hall. Upstairs, there are three bedrooms (one available for guests), a bathroom, and a home office. The house blends old and new: parts are over 100 years old, while others have been renovated with modern touches like solar panels, automatic roller shutters, and full insulation. We also have a fully renovated kitchen (2020) and three toilets.
In the garden, there’s a "castle" with a slide, a fireplace, grassy areas, and a wooden storage hut. A highlight is the spacious 40-square-meter terrace, ideal for relaxing in the summer sun.
We also offer a newly renovated 38-square-meter apartment too, designed by an interior designer, which was originally a garage but was transformed into a modern, cozy space in 2022. Perfect for couples or smaller families, this apartment features a double bed, a kitchen, a dining area, and a beautiful shower. This apartment will be available for PLU guests until at least September 2025.
Lastly, there is a separate 40-square-meter apartment which is out-of-scope for PLU as it is home to Delina and Julia, our wonderful tenants from Albania. They have lived next door for five years and are quiet and friendly, you will barely notice their presence.
Larger groups are welcome too. Once with Warmshowers (cycle-tourers CS) we hosted a family of six, including four kids between 4 and 9, while we were also home, and everything worked out wonderfully. We always aim to be flexible and make sure everyone has a great time.
Budapest is a vibrant city with a wealth of amazing sights, including the famous Széchenyi Bath, the City Park playground, the Buda Castle, the Chain Bridge, and so much more. Whether you’re exploring the city’s historic landmarks or enjoying its parks and spas, there’s something for everyone to enjoy! Take a look at our photo gallery to see some of the amazing sights that make Budapest so special!
The space
If we do a simultaneous exchange, you can have the large apartment all to yourselves, or if available, even both 160+38sq apartments. Even if we don’t plan to travel during your desired days of visit, we can discuss the possibility of us moving to Granny's house in the countryside, so you will have more spaces. (available only during summer or school holidays).
As mentioned, in most cases, you will be able to stay the 38m² apartment, which offers privacy even when we’re at home. ...but feel free to join us in our 160m² apartment (just 20 seconds away in the same courtyard) for board games, meals, or a chat.
If the smaller apartment doesn’t suit your group or is unavailable, you're welcome to stay in the main apartment (doing Hospitality style of stay), where you'll have the living room and/or the free bedroom. We're experienced hosts (Couchsurfing, Warmshowers), we know that flexibility on both sides is key. Families with children are especially welcome, as our kids (born in 2018, 2020, 2022) love having guests their age.
However, if you're traveling without children, you are also very welcome to stay with us / in our apartment(s). Either way, we will do our bests to provide you very a pleasant stay with or without us being in the same house.
Guest access
You will have your keys. There are stairs even for the ground floor. It is okay with a stroller, but sadly it is not wheelchair accessible.

This is just the local neighborhood. The entire city of Budapest offers much much more, and we’d be happy to share personal recommendations based on your interests when you visit. If you're into running, Arpi would love to join you for a sightseeing discovery run during your stay in case of Hospitality stays.
Getting to my home
Budapest has a busy international airport with flights to and from major European cities and some overseas destinations. Public transport is easily accessible, and Google Maps provides real-time schedules and updates, including delays. Traffic is usually lighter in summer, and alternative transportation options like bicycles and Lime e-scooters are also available. For car rentals, I recommend RentBen, where you can rent cars directly from locals for a lower price, with more personalized experience, insurance included.
Nearest airport
Budapest's airport is 25-40 minutes away from our home, depending on traffic. If you're staying with us (Hospitality) and we're available, we’d be happy to pick you up or drop you off. We have a 7-seater car with a roof box and 6 child seats, so there’s plenty of space for all your kids and luggage—no worries! :)
A taxi to/from our home is from 11,000 HUF one way, for up to 6 people (if you don't have a lot of luggage). For larger groups (7-9 people) or more luggage, I recommend an airport van transfer, which costs around 25,000 HUF for both ways. It's a reliable option we've used many times. Public transport is also an option, at around 3,000 HUF, depending on how many lines you take. However, I don't recommend public transport as it takes at least an hour and involves a transfer. For groups of 4 or more, it’s not even worth it financially. Unfortunately, the train is not yet an option—perhaps in 2032... :)
Getting around
By bike: We’ve got you covered with regular bikes, e-bikes, child trailers, and child seats. We’ve got enough gear to carry up to 6 kids by bikes! Even if we are cycle touring during your stay, some of these gears will be available for you - we can always discuss it in advance.
Public transport: Budapest has great options, and it is inexpensive: e.g. a 72 hours pass cost you only 5500 HUF, and a monthly is 9500 HUF. erfect if you want to explore more of the city. The second-oldest metro line in the world is here too—great for getting around quickly!
The Budapest Pass: a sightseeing pass that offers unlimited travel on public transport and free or discounted entry to many of Budapest's top attractions:
- Free entry to major attractions like the Széchenyi Bath, Buda Castle, Museum of Fine Arts, and more.
- Discounts for other attractions, boat tours, and experiences in the city.
- 5-day pass: Approx. 22,000 HUF, but there are other options as well
- Access to guided tours and discounts on restaurants and shops.
- It is a great option for tourists who plan to visit several attractions and use public transport frequently.
By car: While we’re not quite ready to share our car (it’s our only way of getting around easily and it's a bit of an investment), we highly recommend Rentben.com for affordable car rentals directly from locals, with insurance included. It’s a fantastic option if you need a car during your stay.
To the city: The city center is just 20-30 minutes away from our house, depending on where you're headed and the time of day. Whether you’re biking, using public transport, or renting a car, getting around is super easy!

Arpad
We are a family with 3 children: Zita (mommy), Arpi (daddy), Luca Maria (2018), Julianna (2020) and Agoston Hugo (2022). Before the children, we cycled around the world as a honeymoon: in 2011-2014, we pedalled 40,000 kilometres in 46 countries. Since then, we've settled down more, but we still do a lot of travelling with the kids too. We also use Warmshowers.org, and previously used Couchsurfing for hospitality, but these are not really working anymore for a group of 5... :) We love meeting people from all over the world, from all walks of life.
"Zita love the sea, Arpi love the mountains. We have dreams to go back to Nordkapp, but this time with a VW T6 California Beach, so Norway is in our bucket list very much."
People Like Us is the world's most trusted home exchange community. We believe in sharing, trust, generosity, respect, communication, equality, cooperation, honesty, hospitality, friendship, flexibility and adventure. We take pride in our homes and we care about the environment in which we live: our village, city, country and our planet. We care about the ethos of home exchange and we do it because we love the experience and the friendships that it generates.
Our house and the garden on a sunny summer day from the perspective of our hedgehog. He is present seasonally only and should not be disturbed or fed. :)
The playground in the back of our small garden, boost with a climing wall, sandbox, many-many toys and a slide. Purposly built in the middle of a walnut tree, so there are plenty of shade during the summer. :) Since this photo, the tree has much larger branches.
A selection of our child-friendly bicycles, tricycles, taxis, wheelbarrows, and rollers—all fully available for our guests to enjoy! 😊
The kitchen of the 38 sq. meter apartment, with built-in fridge and freezer, oven, cooktop, sink, dishwasher and washing machine.
The bathroom of the 38sq. meter apartment.
The bedroom of our secondary, 38 sq. meter apartment. It’s perfect for couples, but if you're traveling with more people, we can provide extra mattresses. Alternatively, you’re welcome to share our 160 sq. m apartment next door (where you'll have your own room and/or the living room). If we're away during your visit, the larger 160 sq. meter apartment will be all yours, or you can enjoy both spaces.
The 38 sq. meter apartment from the perspective of its very first tenant ever, a spider called Jack. He used to live in the top right corner of the bedroom. He never paid any rent, so after 6 consecutive month of non-payment, we gently moved him to the walnut tree in the garden. :)
This is us in Arpi's natural habitat: the mountains and bicycles. There’s a third child, but she’s behind the camera.
Having fun with a French family in our living room. We hosted them via Warmshowers.org, a platform like Couchsurfing, but for cycle-tourers.
Our living room—don’t worry, it won’t be this chaotic when you arrive! 😊 It features a cozy corner filled with toys, board games, and children’s books, and even has a nest swing for added fun.
The grand playground in City Park, seen from our first child's perspective during late autumn, is a truly special place. We feel so blessed to live just 15 minutes away from it. Without exaggeration, we can confidently say it's one of the best and largest playgrounds in Central Europe—and perhaps even in all of Europe! Though we can't be sure, since we haven't visited every playground yet... :) The white-red hot air ballon is a hude climbing frame, inside, the children can safely climb to its top. Prepare packlunch in advance (or eat at the nearby Kiosk or order pizza on Wolt/Foodora to the playground as we often do), you won't be able to go home easily from this place. :)
The Chain Bridge from our 2 years old daughter's perspective.
Our favorite playground in the City Park, just a short ride from our home. Perfect for children of all ages, it features a lovely kiosk, clean toilets (100 HUF, accepts bank cards, or ask us for the QR code), and is surrounded by sights and green spaces—making it ideal for families.
This is just part of our bicycle collection! We also have electric-assist bikes, two front and a back childseat, Thule Chariot Cougar two-seater that doubles as a trailer and sport stroller, and a WeeHoo iGo two-seater trailer with included rain and sun covers. Active families with children will love these versatile options. Most of the year, they’ll be available for you—just let us know in advance! 😉
We have a firepit in the corner of our garden, with firewood available for you to use if you're in the mood for a barbecue.
This is our ultimate family carrier set of e-touring bicycles. With this setup, we could carry a tent, camping gear, and up to 6 children in total. Not that we have that many (we have 3), but it’s always good to have full redundancy when it comes to child-carrying capacity! :) In case we're not traveling with them during your visit, these bikes are available for you to explore Budapest and its surroundings. 😉
This custom-made tricycle child taxi is our children’s favorite. The child at the front pedals and steers the vehicle, while the others at the back are the passengers. If they get tired, they can swap places, or the passengers at the back can jump out and help push the chariot forward. This will stay at the house for your childen to use.
The Buda Castle, viewed from the iconic Gellért Hill, with the stunning Buda Mountains rising in the background. Arpi knows these woods and hills inside out and loves sharing their hidden natural gems with guests—spots that most tourists, and even guidebooks, overlook.
The House of Parliament, viewed from across the Danube at Batthyány Square.
The Chain Bridge and the Basilica, as seen from the Buda Castle. We’d be delighted to show you these sights on the map and help plan a city sightseeing tour tailored to your interests! Arpi loves maps and planning journeys - even if they’re not his own! 😊
The view during sunset from the publicly accessible top of the newly built Museum of Ethnography, at the edge of City Park, just 100 meters from the playground mentioned earlier and only a short ride from our home.
Our favorite playground, just a short ride from our home in City Park. It’s perfect for children of all ages, and during the summer, there’s a wet corner with a mud kitchen. With plenty of sights around the City Park, you can easily combine fun for both children and parents in one day.
The famous Széchenyi Bath is located in Budapest’s City Park, just a short ride from our home. As the largest medicinal bath in Europe, it’s easily accessible with a short tram ride followed by a ride on the Millennium Underground (Metro Line 1), the oldest metro system in mainland Europe. Opened in 1896, it is the second-oldest metro system in the world. This convenient metro line will also take you to the city center, allowing you to begin your adventure even before you reach your destination!
If you're looking for an alternative, less touristic and more children friendly spa experience with similar thermal waters, the Pascal Spa is only a 6-minute walk from our home. It features various pools, a children’s area, and saunas, offering a relaxing experience for all ages.
