Neighbourhood
Welcome to Muiden, a beautiful and historic city just 15 minutes from central Amsterdam. Officially a city since 1122, Muiden offers a unique blend of old-world charm and modern convenience—making it an ideal location for a relaxing getaway or extended stay.
At the heart of Muiden is the famous Muiderslot Castle, a stunning 13th-century fortress complete with towers, gardens, and moats. The historic center features scenic canals, cobbled streets, and traditional Dutch architecture, creating a postcard-perfect setting.
Local amenities include:
• A large supermarket 7 mins walk away
• Several cozy cafés and excellent restaurants, check out Fort H, our favourite, along the waterfront
• A bakery, pharmacy, and boutique shops
• A marina and locks where you can watch boats pass through or rent one for the day
• Walking and cycling paths through nearby nature reserves and along the Vecht River
Muiden also offers excellent public transport links and road access, making it easy to explore nearby cities like Amsterdam, Naarden, Bussum, and Weesp.
Nearest airport
Schiphol 25 mins by train from Weesp
Getting Around
We have 2 bikes available. The bus stops 50m from our door. The main bus interchange is 10 mins walk. This gives direct access to Amsterdam in 15 mins.

People Like Us Local Guide
We have lived in the Netherlands 30+ years. We have been very active in the expat community and have hosted many families over the years. We are happy to show you around and to provide recommendations in knowing more about the city and surrounding areas, or for any tips.
It has been a pleasure to welcome you to Valgañón.
The conversation has been fluent and in perfect Spanish. Our house has been very well maintained and everything has gone perfectly.
We will love to go to Muiden soon.
Thanks a lot.
Stephen and Kath's home is comfortable - so comfortable that you may not want to leave! Clean lines, understated elegance, and warm furnishings sit side-by-side with cutting edge technology and high-end appliances. But don't worry - even I learnt to work the remotes after I read Stephen's excellent guide. Also appreciated were his video tutorials - a very welcome way to learn about the alarm, security cameras, lighting, powered awning, etc.
The place is beautifully furnished and decorated with warm tones, family photographs and nice art. We had plenty of room for the four of us and the house could fit more if necessary. There were three good sized bedrooms for us, as well as an office. The front of the house looked right out over the canal - a gorgeous view to wake up to in the morning, and gaze at during the day.
I loved sitting out on lovely outdoor sofa on the back deck in the evening, reading under the awning while the sun went down. This is a quiet, residential neighbourhood, well suited to relaxing.
Just up the road is the supermarket, which gave us easy to reach groceries.
In terms of transport - within walking distance is the main transport link - a park and ride with buses leaving every couple of minutes to the nearby towns and central Amsterdam. The transport system itself is easy to navigate using the 9292 app that Stephen recommended to me (Thanks!), and you can tap on and off with your bank card. Despite the P+R being only 1km away, we had lots of bags and the walk would have been too much for us. A much handier way is a connection that leaves once an hour, joining Schipol by train to Weesp and then a connecting 110 bus to just outside their door. It was a very easy return journey for us and worth aiming for that.
Two minutes in the other direction will bring you walking into Muiden town - picturesque in every way with lots of small shops, restaurants and cafes. Of course, the main visitor attraction is the Castle, which is well worth a visit.
Stephen's lovely neighbours told us the best local swimming spots and we joined the other locals jumping in and out of the canal on a warm summer's day.
We were very lucky to find such a comfortable, well-located home in one of the most beautiful neighbourhoods close to Amsterdam. A really relaxing gem.

As if they were never there except for the gift they left!
A lovely apartment set in stunning countryside. The apartment had all we needed. Our hosts could not be more obliging. We managed some wine tasting and plenty of walking. Thanks for hosting us.
Stephen & Kathryn.
Thank you very much.
We are delighted to have received you and looking forward to visiting you soon.
A hug!
Scott and Carol have a lovely apartment in a great location for touring the Costa Brava, with Padel and a par 3 golf course within 7 mins walk it was just what we wanted. The apartment had all we needed and more. Thanks again for hosting.
Marta and family have yet to visit us but the communication with them and the humorous what's app exchanges suggest they will be a great family to host
Aja and family have been great guests. We have not actually met only on a video call, which is a great way of getting to know a family before an exchange. They were very respectful of the house and I think they enjoyed themselves, especially as they came back less than a week later! For us as being new to the web site they were a great introduction to a whole new world.
