Neighbourhood
Our house is surrounded by farmland used to grow wheat, maize and stunning sunflowers. It’s very peaceful and quiet. The perfect place to destress and relax. We often see deer or the occasional wild boar in the surrounding fields.
Within a ten-minute drive, is the local town of Chalais. This has two supermarkets and a traditional farmer’s market every Monday morning – not to be missed. There’s also a mix of shops and several restaurants and bars. Don't miss a visit to our wonderful cave [pronounced cav] where you can buy a large range of wine, pineau [a local fortified wine] or cognac. You can also take your own container and have it filled with local wine – the expensive one is usually less than 5€ a litre.
Ten minutes in the opposite direction is Aubeterre-sur-Drone, one of the prettiest villages in France. It has local shops selling artisan products, and lovely restaurants and bars. It also has a river beach with a café. We like to use our inflatable canoe to paddle here for a coffee and ice cream.
During the summer months, there are a plethora of local events, from ‘moules et frites’ [mussels and chips] to night markets, where you take your own plate and cutlery and buy what you want to eat from a variety of stalls. Or you may be lucky and catch un repas de chasse [a meal organised by the local hunters]. The many courses are cooked from sanglier [wild boar] and chevreuil [roe deer]. Maybe you’d like to spend some time walking around the many brocantes [fairs selling antiques and collectables] or vide grenier which literally means empty your attic so you can buy almost anything at these. One person’s tat is another person’s treasure!
The historic cities of Angouleme and Périgueux are just under an hour away, whilst you can be in the centre of the beautiful city of Bordeaux in 1.5 hours. I’ll provide extra information tailored to your interests. About 1.5 hours away you can lose yourself in the many bastide towns, these are fortified towns, many built in the 12th century.
Our corner of France is most famous for its cognac and red wine. If you visit the town of Cognac you can discover the many cognac houses and take a tour to learn about how it’s made and taste the final product. However, if you prefer red wine, then you can head to Bergerac or Saint Emilion and discover their many châteaux or domaines to learn about the intricacies of wine production and experience a wine tasting like no other! Better still do both!
Come and enjoy the delights of our home and rural France. A bientôt

Gaynor
Hiya and bonjour, we're Brian and Gaynor McKernan, a Scouse/Scottish couple who live in southwest France. We've done several exchanges years ago but none since 2017, when we moved to France.
Brian is a keen DIYer with a love of all things wood and he also likes to walk and cycle, in contrast to his love/hate relationship with computers. I love to swim and sing and have recently discovered mosaicing. We're big cinema-goers and love eating out, as well as entertaining at home. Whilst Brian is retired, I still work as a self-employed celebrant.
People Like Us is the world's most trusted home exchange community. We believe in sharing, trust, generosity, respect, communication, equality, cooperation, honesty, hospitality, friendship, flexibility and adventure. We take pride in our homes and we care about the environment in which we live: our village, city, country and our planet. We care about the ethos of home exchange and we do it because we love the experience and the friendships that it generates.
