Neighbourhood
From our home in Binningen, you are perfectly placed to enjoy both nature and city life. While the setting feels wonderfully rural and quiet, the cultural heart of Basel is easily within reach.
You can reach the city centre in around 20 minutes by public transport or 10 minutes by bicycle. Once there, you may stroll along the banks of the Rhine, settle into one of the many cafés and bars, visit renowned art museums, or enjoy a concert or theatre performance at venues such as the Kaserne or the Volkshaus.
For everyday needs, a nearby shopping area is just three bus stops away on Bus 61, offering supermarkets, pharmacies, banks and everything needed for daily life. A weekly farmers’ market takes place right by the local church, only two minutes from the house, where you can buy fresh, regional produce in a relaxed neighbourhood atmosphere.
Basel’s unique location at the crossroads of Switzerland, Germany and France makes it an ideal base for exploring the wider region. The Black Forest in Germany and the Vosges in France are both easily reachable for day trips. You can also cross into Saint-Louis (France) or nearby towns in Germany to visit lively farmers’ markets and enjoy fresh local food.
Thanks to Switzerland’s excellent train network, you can reach cities such as Zurich, Bern or Lucerne in about one hour. Basel itself offers a rich and vibrant cultural scene, with world-class museums, theatres, concerts and festivals throughout the year. Basel is known for its exceptionally rich cultural life, with a remarkable number of beautiful museums — from world-class art collections to architecture, design and contemporary exhibitions. The historic old town, with its winding streets, hidden courtyards and the Rhine as its centrepiece, invites long walks and unhurried discovery.
In summer, one of Basel’s most beloved traditions comes alive: swimming in the Rhine. Locals float downstream with the current, carried by the water through the heart of the city — a unique and joyful way to experience Basel from a completely different perspective.
