Getting around

You dont need a car in Hamburg to get around, everything can be done and see by bus, metro or foot. Hamburg is often described as the most beautiful city in the world, and for good reason. The city combines maritime flair, historic architecture and modern city life in a unique way. The port of Hamburg, one of the largest in the world, is the heart of the city and gives it a dynamic, cosmopolitan atmosphere. The Elbe and the many canals that meander through the city characterize the cityscape and give Hamburg an incomparable charm. The Speicherstadt, the largest warehouse complex in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the modern Elbphilharmonie concert hall represent the perfect blend of tradition and innovation. The numerous green spaces and parks, such as Planten un Blomen or the Stadtpark, offer relaxation amidst the urban backdrop. The Hanseatic architecture, the magnificent merchants' houses and the lively districts such as St. Pauli or the Schanzenviertel give the city character and diversity. Hamburg is also a city of culture, with countless theaters, museums and music events. Here are the 10 best things to do in Hamburg: • Hamburg harbor and jetties: The second largest port in Europe is the heart of the city. A harbor tour offers an impressive view of the ships and the hustle and bustle of the port. • Elbphilharmonie: This modern landmark not only offers fantastic concerts, but also a free viewing platform with a breathtaking view of the harbor and the city. • Speicherstadt: The UNESCO World Heritage Site with its red-brick buildings and narrow canals is an absolute must-see. It is also home to Miniatur Wunderland, the largest model railroad in the world. • Alster: The Inner and Outer Alster are perfect for walks, boat trips or a relaxing time by the water. • St. Pauli and Reeperbahn: The legendary entertainment district offers numerous clubs, bars and entertainment options. A visit to the fish market in the early morning is also a must. • Planten un Blomen: A beautiful park in the middle of the city, which is particularly famous for its impressive water features and tropical plants. • City Hall: The magnificent City Hall in the heart of the city is a masterpiece of architecture and symbolizes Hamburg's proud history as a Hanseatic city. • HafenCity: A modern district with impressive architecture, stores and restaurants - a fine example of the combination of tradition and innovation. • Elbe Tunnel: A walk through the old Elbe tunnel offers a unique opportunity to cross under the Elbe and experience Hamburg from a new perspective. • Michel (St. Michael's Church): Hamburg's Michel offers a breathtaking view of the city from its tower and is a landmark of the city. There are many interesting places and cities around Hamburg that are perfect for day trips or short breaks. Here are some of the best destinations in the area: Lüneburg: only about 30 minutes south of Hamburg lies the beautiful Hanseatic city of Lüneburg. The charming old town with its brick buildings and rich history is particularly worth seeing. The Lüneburg Heath in the surrounding area also offers wonderful nature for hiking and cycling. Lübeck: One of the most beautiful medival Hanseatic cities (more than 1,000 years old), about an hour from Hamburg. Lübeck is famous for the Holsten Gate, its old town (UNESCO World Heritage Site) and the delicious marzipan. The city also offers historic alleyways, churches and the famous Buddenbrookhaus. Schwerin: This idyllic city, around an hour east of Hamburg, impresses with its fairytale castle, which is located on an island in Lake Schwerin. Schwerin also offers beautiful parks and a picturesque old town. Travemünde: The charming seaside resort on the Baltic Sea, close to Lübeck, invites you to relax. The long sandy beach and beach promenade offer a perfect break by the sea. Altes Land: The largest contiguous fruit-growing area in northern Europe southwest of Hamburg is a wonderful destination, especially in spring when the apples are in bloom. Here you can discover idyllic villages, dykes and orchards. Cuxhaven: A little further away (approx. 2 hours) is the coastal town of Cuxhaven. It is well worth a visit for the North Sea beaches, mudflat walks in the UNESCO World Heritage Wadden Sea and the fishing port. Helgoland: Germany's only high seas island can be reached by ferry or plane. The striking red rocks and wildlife, including seals and grey seals, make Heligoland unique.
