Neighbourhood

Nestled in the picturesque Salzkammergut Lake District area in Upper Austria lies the historic spa town of Bad Ischl. Once the summer refuge for the Habsburg emperor, the town exudes an imperial vibe with its grand buildings and opulent architecture with mountain scenery all around you. The Kaiservilla (the former summer residence of Emperor Franz Joseph I) is a must-see, and you can enjoy a leisurely stroll through the extensive park. Konditorei Zauner is a traditional Austrian Coffee house. But the real star of the show is their famous Zaunerstollen, a creation of this particular café which is exported worldwide. Among the ingredients in Zaunerstollen are nougat, hazelnuts, and chocolate, among others. Though it’s served in small pieces, a single slice is hearty enough to satisfy even the biggest sweet tooth. One of the most exciting activities is taking a ride on the Katrin cable car to the top of Katrin Mountain. The cable car journey takes just 15 minutes and offers stunning panoramic views of the seven lakes and the surrounding mountain range. There are great hiking trails around the mountain. Bad Ischl is an all year round resort renowned for it's breathtaking scenery with great hiking trails, mountain meadows and marked bike paths for the energetic. In winter, you can go snowshoe hiking (we have pairs available), cross country skiing (nearest is Rettenbach Alm, 8kms) and even downhill skiing at Dachstein West with over 160kms of prepared piste (30 minutes by car or you can take the public bus). In the winter season between the end of November and up to Christmas, most towns have very romantic Christmas markets which are really worth visiting. Visit the famous quaint UNESCO village of Hallstatt or the salt mines by public bus or car - they are only only 19 kilometres away. Take a day trip to the villages of St. Wolfgang, St. Gilgen, Mondsee ( featured in The Sound of Music), or perhaps a boat trip on Lake Wolfgang, The sheep Mountain (Schafberg) cog railway, Bad Ausseerland, Loser cable car, Dachstein Glacier, the 5 Fingers viewing platform on Mount Krippenstein, or a day to the amazing city of Salzburg. The list of things to do in the area is endless.

Margaret & Andy

We are a retired fun loving, adventurous couple in our 60's who love to travel the world. I, (Margaret/British), have worked in the travel industry as a tour guide/tour manager for years (and I still do occasionally). We've now decided to slow down and appreciate independent travelling without staying in hotels. I met my husband Andy (Austrian) when we were both working in The Gambia way back in 1985. We're not exactly new to home exchange as we have had 9 exchanges in the past with our main home on another platform. We now have a second home in Bad Ischl which we are excited to offer and we are really looking forward to exchanging whether it be luxury, basic or camping. Give us a try if you want to visit the Austrian lakes and mountain area.
