Neighbourhood
Nestled in the picturesque Salzkammergut Lake District area in Upper Austria lies the historic spa town of Bad Ischl. Once the summer refuge for the Habsburg emperor, the town exudes an imperial vibe with its grand buildings and opulent architecture with mountain scenery all around you. The Kaiservilla (the former summer residence of Emperor Franz Joseph I) is a must-see, and you can enjoy a leisurely stroll through the extensive park.
Konditorei Zauner is a traditional Austrian Coffee house. But the real star of the show is their famous Zaunerstollen, a creation of this particular café which is exported worldwide. Among the ingredients in Zaunerstollen are nougat, hazelnuts, and chocolate, among others. Though it’s served in small pieces, a single slice is hearty enough to satisfy even the biggest sweet tooth.
One of the most exciting activities is taking a ride on the Katrin cable car to the top of Katrin Mountain. The cable car journey takes just 15 minutes and offers stunning panoramic views of the seven lakes and the surrounding mountain range. There are great hiking trails around the mountain.
Bad Ischl is an all year round resort renowned for it's breathtaking scenery with great hiking trails, mountain meadows and marked bike paths for the energetic. In winter, you can go snowshoe hiking (we have pairs available), cross country skiing (nearest is Rettenbach Alm, 8kms) and even downhill skiing at Dachstein West with over 160kms of prepared piste (30 minutes by car or you can take the public bus).
In the winter season between the end of November and up to Christmas, most towns have very romantic Christmas markets which are really worth visiting.
Visit the famous quaint UNESCO village of Hallstatt or the salt mines by public bus or car - they are only only 19 kilometres away.
Take a day trip to the villages of St. Wolfgang, St. Gilgen, Mondsee ( featured in The Sound of Music), or perhaps a boat trip on Lake Wolfgang, The sheep Mountain (Schafberg) cog railway, Bad Ausseerland, Loser cable car, Dachstein Glacier, the 5 Fingers viewing platform on Mount Krippenstein, or a day to the amazing city of Salzburg. The list of things to do in the area is endless.

Our stay in Bad Ischl was absolutely wonderful! Margaret and Andy were fantastic hosts—so kind, welcoming, and easy to communicate with. Their home is beautiful, comfortable, and perfectly located for exploring the area. We especially loved relaxing in the courtyard, taking in the gorgeous mountain views after a day of sightseeing. Everything was spotless and thoughtfully prepared, and their local tips made our stay even better. We’d love to come back one day—highly recommended!
You're welcome anytime, but stay a bit longer next time!
Margaret and Andy were not only super hosts they were also very "in the know", open hearted and easy going. They welcomed us personally, gave us great tips and their welcome gift was overwhelming (a beautiful ornament that will be a delihgt in our house:)). The stay in the apt was perfect, very comfy and very well equipped. We were only 2 persons, but the place is big enough for 4. If you ever consider Austria, Bad Ischl is your place to go:)! Thank you Margaret and Andy
A beautiful, comfortable, warm, well equipped apartment tastefully decorated with Margaret's own art and keepsakes that enhance the style. In a lovely quiet location with walks from the door and birdsong all around. We appreciated the comfy bed, the underfloor heating, the sharp knives and the reclining chairs.
The bakery is just 5 mins walk away with a great selection of breads and pastries; try the appelstrudl on a Monday!
Walking into town was quick and easy whilst exploring the quiet back streets on foot gave us new sights each time. The local houses are so well kept with an abundance of flowers in gardens or balconies with wildflower meadows slotted in between.
Margaret left a comprehensive list of places to go and hikes to do and wow, you are just spoilt for choice. Every lake we visited was beautiful, each hike we did brought us stunning views, every coffee and cake we had was delicious! Getting the Katrin cable car and doing hikes to the summits was a highlight as was going on the saltmine tour at Altausee. Vordere Gosau with a lake walk and views of the Dachstein, an explore of Halstatt, ( take the top level street), Blinkingmoos Nature Reserve for the best wildflower meadows we've ever seen. We had 2 lake swims, listened to a local brass band amongst local people wearing their traditional costumes with pride and relished the neat, clean and tidy towns.
We were greeted with chocolates, alpine napkins, local gingerbread and homemade schnapps! Margaret answered our many questions promptly both prior and during the exchange.
Thank you so much Margaret and Andy for sharing your magical slice of paradise! We loved every minute and can completely understand why it's your happy place.
Well-located home at walking distance of Bad Ischl centre. There were no surprises as the description and photos on the PLU site are updated. This home is perfect for a couple but it can accommodate up to 4 people. The flat was very clean and organized and it was evident that our hosts took great care in preparing it for us.
Margaret put together a comprehensive guide which was extremely useful. Her recommendations of what to do and where to eat were great. We had a great time and we hope we can exchange again with Margaret and Andy as this region is very beautiful in Summer too.
Lindsay and Dalton were lovely guests and although their exchange was short, they would be very welcome back for another exchange in the future. They left our apartment neat and tidy.
This was a last minute exchange and communication was easy and fluent. Melinda and her husband were great guests who left our apartment clean and tidy on departure. Should they wish to come again, they are more than welcome.
Carey and Peter stayed in our home, which they left nice and tidy when they left. They thoroughly enjoyed our area and had some amazing days out, even visiting a place called Blinkingmoos that I'd never heard of! They also added excursion /hiking suggestions, which I will incorporate into my information folder ASAP so that future guests can appreciate their ideas too. Sadly, we did not meet them in person, but we had good communication by mail and WhatsApp both before and during their stay. I hope we will meet them sometime in the future. Thank you for being such good guests, and don't forget that you are welcome back anytime.
Palmira and her husband were great guests. They left the house very clean and tidy and even brought their own bed linen (though we didn't ask for them to do so, it was very much appreciated). Unfortunately, we didn't get to meet them in person, but would welcome them back here anytime again!

Margaret & Andy
We are a retired fun loving, adventurous couple in our 60's who love to travel the world. I, (Margaret/British), have worked in the travel industry as a tour guide/tour manager for years (and I still do occasionally). We've now decided to slow down and appreciate independent travelling without staying in hotels. I met my husband Andy (Austrian) when we were both working in The Gambia way back in 1985.
We're not exactly new to home exchange as we have had 9 exchanges in the past with our main home on another platform. We now have a second home in Bad Ischl which we are excited to offer and we are really looking forward to exchanging whether it be luxury, basic or camping. Give us a try if you want to visit the Austrian lakes and mountain area.
People Like Us is the world's most trusted home exchange community. We believe in sharing, trust, generosity, respect, communication, equality, cooperation, honesty, hospitality, friendship, flexibility and adventure. We take pride in our homes and we care about the environment in which we live: our village, city, country and our planet. We care about the ethos of home exchange and we do it because we love the experience and the friendships that it generates.
