Neighbourhood
Dromod is a small village with a mix of locals and holiday homes. Carrick on Shannon is the nearest big town, 20 mins drive. The area comes alive in the summer when there are plenty of boats in the harbour. The village has walking trails, tennis courts, 2 pubs, a café and a local supermarket. Sligo, with its amazing beaches and mountains is less than an hour away by car. Lough Key Forest Park is 25 mins drive and offers great activities for kids including cycling, forest walks and zip-lining. For culture & history fans, Corlea Trackway Visitor Centre and Strokestown House with the Famine museum are both less than 30 mins drive. Or if you simply want to wander the lanes of lovely Leitrim or enjoy a swim at a secluded lake, we will point you in the right direction!

People Like Us Local Guide
Happy to meet up and offer advice on the local area.
Big LOVE post for Lisa Shields #3641 home in lovely Dromod, county Leitrim in Ireland 🇮🇪 It’s in a little secure cove of river Shannon walkable to a lovely town called Dromod. We were there for 8 days for part of our almost 3 week , 30th Anniversary trip! It’s nestled in an area with just incredible vistas of lakes and mountains. We did multiple day trips to Sligo, Westport, Donegal, Galway …even Dingle and Doolin out west and south. Train ride to Dublin - an hour I believe. It’s also a half hour from Northern Ireland as well.
Just a really lush , green, incredibly beautiful part of Ireland 🇮🇪
We were able to find both sets of great grandparents farming area in county Mayo and county Monaghan as well! Local libraries were incredibly helpful.
There is so much to do right around Dromod - we could have just stayed put the whole time as well. Lisa’s home guide lays out all the local area attractions including things in her neighborhood :tennis , the harbor etc… as well as beautuful forest walks, hiking trails, and beach /swimming areas
Her house was spacious and beds comfortable with a beautiful backyard for relaxing - even some neighbor cows 💗
Lisa went out of her way to meet us in Dublin when we landed with a lunch box of snacks and waters and the communication was excellent the whole week - even a face time call when we comically couldn’t figure out the oven!
She even met us at the rental car place for hugs and goodbyes and a drop off to the terminal.
Lisa thank you so much for your hospitality and we can’t wait to host you in Easter, 2026 in our beach bungalow in Hull, MA on the south shore of Boston.
Thanks Betsy and Dan, it was lovely to meet you and so glad you enjoyed your stay at our holiday home. You were great guests and we are looking forward to our stay in your beach house next year!
We reached out to Lisa on a bit of a whim, and she went out of her way to make the exchange happen for us.
Her house on Lough Bofin is spacious and was great for me and my two boys. The house was neat and clean, and the large garden was a bonus. Lisa was always easy to reach and super friendly in her communication.
There’s so much to do in the area. We spent a weekend at the Carvan and Lightrim Railway, which was a real treat—especially for the kids. This quirky collection of trains, planes and other cool gadgets is run by volunteers who are truly passionate about what they do.
Longford and the Corlea Trackway are also nearby, and the old coal mine is definitely worth checking out. There’s plenty to keep you busy for a few days.
The river network is great for renting a boat and exploring the area, whether it’s just for a few hours or a few days.
We had a fantastic time on this exchange. I’m really looking forward to meeting Lisa in person and welcoming her to Munich this fall!
It was a pleasure to host Lisa and her husband! They're welcome back any time :-)
We had a wonderful exchange with Lisa, marked by smooth communication and the joy of hosting her and her husband. After meeting her for coffee in Dublin and enjoying her warm hospitality at her beautiful lakeside home on the Shannon in summer, it was a pleasure to welcome her to our home in autumn.
Betsy and Dan were great exchangers and such lovely people too. We met up very briefly at the start
and end of their visit and it was a pleasure to meet them. Very easy communication and they looked after our house very well too.
We spent a lovely few days at Sevilla and Scott's Swiss studio in Leysin. A gorgeous part of the world with wonderful views, hiking and cycling close by. Sevilla was a very efficient experienced exchange host, always available to answer questions. Thank you for a lovely stay :)
You're so welcome! It was a pleasure to host you :-)
We had a really lovely stay at Diana's home. Light filled and spacious, it is a great place to stay. Perfectly located within easy reach of the parks and city centre. Cycling around Munich was a joy, it is very flat and we got some beautiful Autumn weather. We would definitely recommend Diana's family home for a visit to Munich.
Great exchanger, hassle-free, smooth communication and very efficient making arrangments. It was a pleasure to have Diana and her family stay at our holiday home on The Shannon. We are looking forward to our trip to Munich!
