General overview

We live in a typical four bedroom family home. Our home is single level and mobility/wheel chair friendly with a ramp. Bayview is a family friendly suburb without any through-traffic. You will find many bush walks, where you can hear and enjoy native birds, plants, mangrove forests, streams, etc. It offers four playgrounds (plus local school's playground) for the kids, a (Thai) takeaway, a local dairy (convenience store), community centre, and a coffee van. Located on Auckland's North Shore, life here is less busy than the main centre. The nearest bus stop is an easy three minutes walk away and the bus takes you to the city centre in approx 35-45 minutes depending on traffic. We are a family with its origins in Germany (though the kids were born in Aotearoa/New Zealand). In the middle of 2025 we are planning to travel to Europe again. We would be thrilled to hear from others who are willing to offer their home for a trip in Europe, and would pitch some of the highlights of their neighbourhood/area to us :-)

The space

Our home is single level and (wheel chair) accessible, including two bathrooms (one accessible with an open shower, the other one with a bath tub plus a shower). The house has a fully fenced garden with a trampoline and spa pool, and plenty of deck facing lovely bush views (depending on tides water views as well). The (partially roofed) deck out to the back garden has a barbecue and sun shade sails if needed. For some time to unwind or read a book a sun room with a cup of tea or glass of wine is available as well. Our garden is connected via a gate to local bush walks and the estuary. From there one can reach and explore native bush, play grounds, walks to a boat ramp, etc. The main bedroom has a (super king) double bed, with a sliding door to the back deck and easy access to the spa pool. Two bedrooms have king single beds and the other bedroom has a single bed. One of them has a study desk and a single sized trundle bed to make an additional bed. This bed room as well as the main bedroom also have TVs. We have plenty of toys for the little ones, including Lego, Playmobil, building blocks, wooden railway line, various board games, children's books, etc. There's a separate laundry room with a washing machine, dryer and cleaning items.

Guest access

The house is easily accessible by car from the drive way with off-street parking in front of the house. A ramp and level threshold will ease entry for wheelchair or young kids buggies.

Notes

One room is not shown in the pictures, yet, as our son is still in the process of moving from one to another room. To come when available ... If we are overseas, we won't need the kayaks, cars, etc. If we are within the country, we may require one or some of the above. So, depending on the situation, please discuss what may be available and what may not be. Our cat Carrot is usually fed by our neighbours in our absence. However, we are happy to 'share' the cat with you, too :-) (possibly including feeding duty). She usually sleeps outside and comes in the sun room for a feed. She is very calm and kind, especially due to her age by now as well. Our dog will not be around during your stay. But he is a Labradoodle, which is known for his particularly hypoallergenic fur. And in case you are wondering ... Carrot and our dog are getting along very well. We have already had several au pair students staying with us for longer periods of time, and we are also regularly hosting English language home-stay students at our house. We have always enjoyed the experience and are keen to extend this to the PLU community.

Neighbourhood

There are four playgrounds in Bayview that can be reached by foot. Bayview is a small suburb but has a convenience store, a very good and popular Thai Takeaway shop, and a coffee van. It takes less than 10 minutes by foot to get there. Unless you take the bush walk - than it is 12 minutes or so. There are two large supermarkets nearby (~ 10 minute car ride) or you can catch the bus to Glenfield shopping mall (10 minutes). Bayview has a boat ramp (2 min by car). Around high tide this offers a convenient spot to launch kayaks or a SUP board to paddle around the inner harbour and the mangroves. You're welcome to use our kayaks and life vests. We're part of the Kaipatiki area with many bush walks and nature reserves: https://www.freewalks.nz/auckland/north-shore-walks/ During the summer, a local programme 'Family Fun in the Parks' tours around with plenty of occasions (with weekly schedules) to offer free toys, bikes, scooters, etc. and fun for children in local parks: https://kcft.org.nz/summer-fun-programmes/

Getting to my home

For those flying in, it's a 40-60 min drive by car/taxi (depending on traffic). Shuttles are a convenient and more cost effective alternative (e.g. Super Shuttle).

Getting around

We're spoilt with beautiful beaches and parks on the North Shore. Our favourite beaches are: - Milford beach, shops and eateries: 20 minutes by car - Mairangi Bay and village: 15 minutes by car - Takapuna beach, shops and eateries: 20 minutes by car - Browns Bay, shops and eateries: 20 minutes by car There are many, many more beautiful beaches along the East Cost of the North Shore that can all be reached within a 20-30 minutes drive. Devonport is a large village with great shops, eateries and beaches (Cheltenham is so gorgeous), and you can catch a ferry from there to the city if you like. It offers great view to the City Centre and you can walk along the wharf. We love climbing Mount Victoria as it offers fantastic 360 degree sea and city views. You can see sailing boats and have a great view towards the Hauraki Gulf and Rangitoto - the volcanic island that's near our shores. Auckland itself offers many museums (Auckland War Memorial Museum, Maritime Museum, MOTAT - technology and transport), the Auckland Zoo, Art Gallery and Botanical Gardens. Also a vibrant water front district in the city centre (Wynyard Quarter) with a marina, restaurants, cafes, etc. Beyond Auckland (centre) you can find many interesting islands with plenty to see: Rangitoto (volcanic island with awesome walks), Waiheke (beautiful with many beaches and wineries), Tiritiri Matangi (nature reserve with bird sanctuary). For a day away you can chose between a host of regional parks: Long Bay, Tawharanui, Shakespeare, Wenderholm. Or day trip destinations like the nearby town of Orewa, the nature of the Waitakere Ranges or the wild west coast with Piha beach. For further destinations Auckland has the following in striking distance: - Northland - Coromandel peninsula - Rotorua (Maori, cultural and geothermal centre) - Raglan (great for surfing) - Tauranga
