General overview

A villa in a picturesque medieval village on the shores of lago Maggiore in Piemonte, right on the verge of the national nature reserve but just 1 minute walking distance to a shop and 15 minutes to the beach. Surrounded by evergreens , with camelias in blossom in winter mimosa and azaleas in spring, and gardenias in summer. 10 minutes by car to the region's administrative centre Verbania with its great cafes, restaurants and shops, 30 minutes to Switzerland's Ascona and Locarno, 1 hour to Milano centre and Malpensa airport, 1 hour drive to the nearest ski resorts of Monte Rosa, less than 2 hours' drive to the Ligurian coast near Genova. Great outdoor spaces - three terraces including one on the roof with 360 degree views of the woods, the village and the lake, and a cosy patio with BBQ. There is a sauna and a brand new hot tub in the garden, also with the enchanting views.

The space

The house has three bedrooms and sleeps 6 people plus two on upper bunk beds (usually younger kids), best for two families with up to four children overall. We have prepared it for short-term rentals first time this year, therefore it is free of personal belongings and has everything clearly marked, labelled and functioning. We also provide four mountain bikes.

Neighbourhood

The area is interesting from the cultural and sightseeing point of view (Borromean islands, Stresa, Angera fortress, botanical gardens, religious sanctuaries) and gastronomy. Milan is just 1 hour drive away. There are two new acqua parks in Switzerland within 30-60 minutes' drive, and fantastic Orta San Giulio on lake Orta which is one of Italy's most precious jewels. You can hike right from the house, or choose to drive to one of the surrounding valleys for particular experiences including kayaking, canyoning and nature walks such as Orridi di Uriezzo, our favourite. Boats can be conveniently rented from the nearby hotel -you can swim and moor for lunch on the pretty Pescatori island. There is a ferry to the Borromean islands from Ghiffa port during the summer season. A couple of nice restaurants are within walking distance on the lakefront, and many more can be found in Verbania and the surrounding hills towards Stresa. Local ski resorts are within 1 hour drive (San Domenico ski, Macugnaga in Monte Rosa, Champoluc and Gressoney are around 1.5 hours away, Swiss resorts of Valais (Aletsch arena) are 2 hours' drive away. Ligurian coast is under 2 hours' drive, Alba with its October-November truffle fair 2.15, around same to Barolo and Barbaresco. Getting to my home

The house is reachable by train and taxi from Malpensa airport. Car is preferable in the area if you wish to explore the surroundings, however one can survive without as the shop is right below the house and the beach/park and restaurants are all reachable on foot. There is boat service from the village port during the summer season

Shop is within short walking distance There is bus service between Ghiffa and Verbania, and bus service from Verbania to Malpensa (Alibus)

Julia

We are a family of four, with two sons - a boy of 18 starting engineering course at a University in Belgium and a 14-year old skater boy. We are Russian by nationality residing in Finland, Igor is a telecom executive and Julia works in finance. We love our second home on lake Maggiore in Italy and always happy to travel places -particularly surfing (Biarritz and surroundings), skiing (val d'Aosta resorts, Mont Blanc area and Les 3Vallees, Austria is also an option) and the sea (Croatia-Sardinia-Corsica are our favourites).
