What I love most about my home is the feeling and comfort it brings. Fire place is filling the house with warmth and a nice smell. It’s not just a place to live, but a space that feels uniquely mine. I’ve filled it with personal touches like cozy blankets, favorite books, and little souvenirs from my travels. What makes it special is how it reflects my personality: every corner tells a story, whether it’s the art on the walls or the way the sunlight streams in in the morning. Most of the renovation is done by me. Extremely proud to present my home to you. My home is where I recharge, get creative, and find peace. It’s my little sanctuary from the world.
The space
I have a balcony in front and a veranda in the back.
All rooms have a function.
Everything is shared. Depends on which room how much privacy you have.
Other guests can be present.
Guest access
Apartment on the third and fourth floor (former attic, no fixed electricity or toilet, no heating or airco) 7 rooms. Double bed, bunk bed 3 people, 1 high-low bed, 5 sofas, air mattresses.
There is a shower cabin with rain shower plus the toilet is solid and has a bidet function. Possibility to borrow a wheelchair.
I am always present except when we exchange at the same time.
It is a hostel, couch surfing apartment. It is possible that there are other PLU people there.
Concept is the more the better.
Notes
I have a cat. I am a digital marketeer and work from home, usually late.
The house is not designed for children. But they are welcome.
It is a Jan Steen house. Jan Steen the painter could describe in a beautiful way with his cheerful paintings, how messy households can look.
That is where the saying comes from a "household of Jan Steen"

Neighbourhood
Benefits of my location: Amsterdam
Living in Amsterdam offers a variety of benefits:
Central location: Situated in a prime location of Amsterdam, the location offers easy access to the city centre, allowing you to enjoy the vibrant city life and cultural attractions with minimal travel time.
Public transport accessibility: The area is well-connected by public transport, including trams and buses, making it easy to commute to different parts of the city.
Local amenities: There are numerous shops, restaurants and cafes nearby, offering a wide range of dining and shopping experiences. You’ll find everything you need just a short walk away.
Green spaces: The neighbourhood is close to several parks and green spaces, providing a perfect escape for outdoor activities and relaxation.
Tranquility experience: Despite its central location, the apartment is relatively quiet, providing a peaceful retreat in this busy city.
Cultural and recreational activities: The area is rich in cultural attractions, including museums, galleries and theatres. In addition, there are plenty of recreational activities available, from cycling along the canals to visiting nearby markets and events.
Community feel: The neighborhood has a welcoming community atmosphere, making it easy to connect with locals and feel at home.
Overall, the living offers a balanced lifestyle with the best of both worlds: the excitement of city life and the comfort of a quiet apartment.

Getting around
Supermarket across the street. Everything is close by.
Extensive public transport network.
Vondelpark within walking distance and Museumplein is nearby.
I like to give tips.
Iris is very nice and welcoming with a bubbly chatty personality. We had great chats in some evenings together. I love her stories and kind hearted acts. Her kitty is so cute, she loves touching and cuddling.
The location is very convenient, Albert supermarket right across the street, pharmacy and a couple of bakeries nearby, about 7min walk to the nearby bus and tram stop, and half an hour to Lelylaan train station that leads you to other Dutch towns.
Iris' home is in an old building with some charm and characteristics of its own. I had never been to such a social housing unit before. Quite an interesting experience.
I stayed only a couple of nights as Iris' single guest during my stay. She offered me her winter bedroom which provided some privacy (I expected to stay in a bunkbed with others). The room is rather crowded with an electrically adjustable single bed and an "ensuite" shower booth, but I didn't mind. As a minimalist who used to do couchsurfing during my youth and not so demanding, plus I only came back to sleep and left early in the morning, I found the accommodation quite decent. Unexpectedly tap water in the home is non-drinkable, but that's fine for me as I could fill my bottle in many fountains in the city centre where I spent most of my time during the day. The wooden stairs (2 floors) are quite steep and narrow (no lift), but fortunately I only have a small backpack and a light small suitcase.
This stay is for me an experience out of my usual comfort zone, but I know Iris has a big heart to share, and she has given her best. She opens her home and heart to welcome me. I had a chance to see for myself the seriousness of Amsterdam's housing crisis, and how many local Dutch elderly are and will be suffering. I'm certain it is the case for many Europeans too.
For anyone who demands more comfort, higher quality, tidiness and cleanliness (like my picky husband - see how spotless our home is!), this might not be the place for you. For solo backpackers who have been to remote parts of the world and can stand various inconveniences with a positive attitude, this would be an unique experience I would recommend to try.
Thank you, Iris, for your time and hospitality. We are looking forward to hosting you in our spare bedroom in Vienna soon.

Hi there! I’m Iris, and I’m thrilled to start this exchange journey. As someone who’s single, I’ve always had a strong sense of independence and a love for exploring new places. This is my first time participating in an exchange, and while I may be new to it, I’m eager to dive in and see where it takes me. I don’t have a specific destination in mind—I’m open to wherever the adventure leads. I’m excited to embrace new cultures, meet new people, and make unforgettable memories along the way. Can’t wait to see what lies ahead!
People Like Us is the world's most trusted home exchange community. We believe in sharing, trust, generosity, respect, communication, equality, cooperation, honesty, hospitality, friendship, flexibility and adventure. We take pride in our homes and we care about the environment in which we live: our village, city, country and our planet. We care about the ethos of home exchange and we do it because we love the experience and the friendships that it generates.
