Have you ever wanted to climb a 14er (a mountain that is over 14,000ft tall)?
Do you enjoy camping? Beautiful views? Wildlife? The sounds of a gurgling creek while you enjoy your morning coffee?
If you answered yes to any of those questions, you will love our rustic cabin in the Colorado mountains.
The Space
The cabin is rustic – no running water, electricity or septic system. However, it is charming, comfortable and has all you need for a relaxing mountain trip. There is no town nearby and you cannot see any of the neighboring cabins.
Inside the cabin, there is a gas stove and all the cooking utensils you will need. There is a tiny bedroom with two twin bunkbeds. The living room has a fireplace and a full size futon.
Outside, there is an outhouse and a separate “bath house” where you can bathe (camp shower or bathtub) and that also has an additional compost toilet.
There is also space on the property to pitch several tents, if you prefer to sleep outdoors. There is a storage shed with a very large tent and comfortable folding mattresses if you wish to set them up.
Notes
Because the cabin is at very high elevation (almost 11,000ft) it’s best to acclimate in Denver for a few days before heading up there if you are coming from sea level. We’re happy to consider swaps that combine our Denver home and mountain cabin. We’d also be happy to swap with other people in Colorado who have cabins or ski condos that want the occasional glamping experience.

Neighbourhood
The cabin is located a short drive from the base of Mt. Sherman, about 30 minute drive on dirt roads from the town of Fairplay. People travel from all over for the opportunity to climb this 14er, and it is considered one of the easier and shorter Colorado 14ers. There is other hiking nearby and places to play in the creek or fish for trout. The roads are not plowed in the winter and the cabin is typically only accessible during June-October.
Even though the neighboring cabins are not close by, sound does travel and we request no loud parties, music, or noise that would bother our neighbors who are there to enjoy the peace and solitude.
Getting to my home

Amanda and her family were excellent guests. Communication was flawless and they took care of the place really well. I hope we can do another exchange in the future.
We had a lovely stay at Tom and Celeste's home. It is in a wooded area in the Northern Black Hills, but a short 15 minute drive to Deadwood and Lead, which are both historic mining towns. There are multiple museums and tours. Deadwood also has casinos, which we did not go to. We also enjoyed going to Devil's Tower, Custer State Park and Mt. Rushmore, which were all a little over an hour drive away. If you're coming during off-season, make sure you check hours of operation of all of the museums and sites -- most have limited days and hours after Oct. 1.
The house is quiet, comfortable and clean. The hot tub was relaxing and the stars at night were amazing. Deer, wild turkey, chipmunks and woodpeckers were frequent guests on the property.
Communication with Tom was excellent! The home manual was very helpful.
Tom and Celeste stayed at our home and were wonderful guests. Communication was excellent. They left the house immaculate. They took wonderful care of our cat and chickens, as well. I would highly recommend them as guests.
