Neighbourhood
Benejúzar (pronounced phonetically as 'ben-eh-hooth-are') is a small, traditional, spanish town with a population of around 5,000 predominantly spanish inhabitants.
It's a beautiful area within the Vega Baja region with all it's unspoilt scenery but without the hustle and bustle found in some of those larger 'tourist trap' towns. The local people are extremely friendly and literally almost everyone will say 'Hola', and most often with a smile, as they pass you in the street!
You'll see from any map that the towns roads are similar to a grid system, meaning it's very easy to find your way around. You could walk right around the towns perimeter in a little over an hour, or from one end to the other in about 15 minutes.
Day to day expenses are minimal. There's a fair choice of local Spanish bars and restaurants many of which will do a 4 or 5 course 'menu del dia' (menu of the day) for around 12-15€ (typically includes a bottle of wine or large jug of beer), although if you look hard enough and down-grade a bit you'll find one in nearby Hurchillo for as little as 5€.. yes that's FIVE euros!
The main square houses one of the two spectacular churches with the surrounding area hosting all kinds of shops, cafe-bars and restaurants. There's literally everything you'd expect to find in any town, hairdressers, petrol stations, shoe shops, chemists, ironmongers, butchers, bakers and all ran by lovely locals always aiming to please.
Nearest airport
Alicante airport (Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández) is approx 50km away and a 40 minute drive.
Murcia International airport is approx 65km away and a 50 minute drive.
Getting Around
A stunning location for spending some quality time away from the everyday hassles that life throws at us, or simply to chill out whilst you recharge those batteries. For any short relaxing breaks a car really isn't necessary (unless you wish to travel to other areas and don't like public transport).
If you're into cycling, hiking or walking then you'll be in very good company in this region. It's handy to have a car if you want to venture further afield, perhaps to try one of the many top-notch Golf courses within easy reach or maybe a shopping trip to one of the many local markets available. Public transport is readily available though and will get you around most areas within the region for as little as 2 or 3 euro.
If shopping is on your agenda, then you could easily spend a day out between Zenia Boulevard and Habaneros in Torrevieja, offering all the outlets you could think of along with safe, secure and totally free parking wherever you go.
For those with an urge to rub shoulders with 'ex pats' there are plenty of neighbouring towns where you can easily 'escape' for a break to allow you to indulge, whether it be fish'n'chips or watching the footy (we like that ourselves occasionally but prefer not to live amongst it).
Guardamar is the closest coastal town (just 15 mins drive) and virtually all the towns in the vicinity have their own market days which are generally good to grab a bargain or two.
Walk, cycle, swim, suntan, shop, cheap food and drink, then home to top-notch accommodation, what more could you possibly need?

Pat
Hi we’re Pat & Tricia, retired early from UK just over 4 years ago and now looking forward to swaps by utilising our homes in Spain (Benejúzar in the Alicante region of the Costa Blanca) and Ireland (Charlestown, County Mayo).
Sun, sea and sangría or ‘the craic’ with Irish countryside, music and Guinness, the choice is yours!
Looking forward to offering our Spanish home from June 2025 and Ireland from about April 2026 (as we have lots of landscaping work that got badly held up this year).
We do have some commitments up to June 2026 so in most cases will probably prefer either non-sim exchanges, globes or plutos up to that time. With effect from July 2026 our primary target will be Australia’s eastern coast for one or more longer-term exchanges so if you’re in Oz please check us out! 😁
