General overview

Our family-sized house (3900 sq. ft/353 sq. m) is in a very walkable and lovely neighborhood on the San Francisco peninsula. We have a large, sunny back yard with fruit trees, flowers and a lawn. There are large doors and windows facing the back with easy access from the family room and kitchen. The patio has 2 sofas, a 6-person table, wood smoker, gas grill and fire pit. The house also has 4 en suite bedrooms, kitchen dining area, separate living and dining rooms, laundry room and a large basement. The San Francisco is a 45 minute drive or a one hour ride from the nearby train station. Santa Cruz and other beaches are 40 minutes by car. [Expect longer times during prime driving hours.] We have many excellent wineries and wine tasting rooms with 30 minutes of our home - less if one is a crow - and there are fabulous hiking trails through the Santa Cruz mountains just a few minutes away. We have a couple of high quality bikes sized for a person who stands about 5'10"/175 cm. and can recommend great routes both on and off road. One can also make easy day trips to Napa and Sonoma wineries, our wonderful redwood forests, Monterey, Carmel and magnificent Big Sur. With our home as a comfortable base, Yosemite, Lake Tahoe and Los Angeles are readily accessible for a weekend or short trip. We have multiple work stations with comfortable chairs and a high speed wireless network. We will also consider use of one or both of our autos. We have a weekly housekeeper included for the exchange. [Right now, we are installing some new carpets and there are boxes and such scattered around the house. So, I still need to add photos.]

The space

Upon entering our home, one finds a large living room with out-of-tune piano and a nice dining room. Walking to the back leads to the family room with television and a workspace. The family room adjoins the breakfast area and a large gourmet kitchen with all the tools, spices and cooking needs anyone can imagine. We also have an espresso machine, drip coffee maker and coffee grinder. We will even leave the sourdough starter in the refrigerator and directions for making fresh bread if requested. There is a very private guest suite on the ground floor with patio access. Down stairs also has a 1/2 bath and a separate laundry room with washer, dryer and iron/ironing board and lines for hanging laundry outside if desired. The bedrooms are spacious with comfortable beds and all have private full bathrooms with both a tub and shower. All mattresses are comfortable and sag free. Upstairs, one finds the large primary bedroom suite which features a California King canopy bed and sitting area with a shower and separate soaking tub in the bath. There are two more bedrooms upstairs with their own bathrooms. One bedroom has a queen-sized sleigh bed, and the other will soon have twin beds. Last, we have a large (600 sq. ft/56 sq. m) open basement room with a ping pong table, toys and lots of room to play. The closets in the basement will be locked. The house is not "baby proof", but is safe for children with reasonable supervision. We have child gates available. I could find or buy a crib, collapsable play pen and high chair if requested.

Guest access

The house is 2 floors plus a basement with 2 sets of regular stairs. Both stairs have full handrails. There are no steps when entering the house through the garage or accessing the patio, although there are low thresholds of about 2 inches. There is a single step to the front door. The guest suite is on the ground level. The primary bedroom has a walk-in shower, but it is upstairs.

Notes

We try to be water conscious by keeping showers brief, not using the soaking tub too much (it is very large), washing large loads of dishes and clothes and turning off faucets when not in direct use. This is especially important in California. Our home has dual-zone central heating but no air conditioning. Hot days are rarely a problem, because our house is well insulated ,and we use the whole house fan at night to draw in cool air. Every bedroom and the family room have ceiling fans, and we have several small fans. If the heat is extreme for more than a few days, the basement is always cool and cooking can be done on the outside gas grill. We also have air filters available. We mostly use vintage cast iron skillets and dutch ovens. Please wash by hand and do not leave these wet, sitting in water or on wet surfaces. Do not place sharp knives, wood utensils/cutting boards/bowls or cast iron in the dishwasher. We will leave instruction for using the Big Green Egg smoker/grill and the gas grill. We have 2 cars and will be consider use. We previously had cats and dogs, but none since 2023. We ask for assistance in watering a few plants both inside and outside for stays over 7 days. Our housekeeper usually cleans on Thursday mornings. We can cancel if more privacy is needed, but we do expect the house to be left clean upon departure.

Neighbourhood

Our neighborhood was originally a summer destination for San Francisco residents. The streets are generally quiet and safe. Our shady street is used by many walkers with dogs and even one miniature horse. There is a very nice country club in the neighborhood which creates a fantastic walking loop and fun hunting for stray golf balls. Homes in the neighborhood vary from small to grand with many different styles and ages. There are multiple coffee shops, small restaurants, a grocery and parks within an easy walk. Our town has a small but lively downtown with a weekly farmers market (May-Oct), multiple groceries, and fantastic restaurants.

Getting to my home

Our home is a 15-minute drive to San Jose International Airport, 35 minutes to San Francisco Airport and one hour to Oakland Airport. San Francisco International can be accessed via a combination of an Uber/Lyft/taxi ride and train. Sadly we have very limited walkable access to public transit, although nearby San Jose and Santa do provide access to regional and national train systems, including the Coast Starlight, California Zephyr and Capital Corridor routes.

Nearest airport

San Jose Mineta International Airport (SJC) - 14 miles with easy freeway access. San Francisco International Airport (SFO) - 30 miles with easy and scenic freeway access. San Francisco Bay Oakland International Airport (OAK) - 40 miles with easy access to freeways.

Getting around

A grocery, multiple small restaurants and Starbucks are easily walkable. A car is recommended and we have 2 available for exchange. For a hospitality stay, we can coordinate the use of one car. One auto is a plug-in-hybrid (PHEV) and seats no more than 4 people. The other is a Volkswagen diesel station wagon with seating for 5.

Tamara

We are an almost retired couple who live in a beautiful neighborhood between San Jose and San Francisco, CA. We love to travel and have never traveled to a place that we did not enjoy. While we have never done an exchange, we have stayed in may AirBnbs and have shared our home with several young people over the years. We like walking, seeing natural beauty, strolling through wonderful neighborhoods, cooking and good food. My husband is an avid bicyclist, and we met playing low-level, coed football, aka soccer, many years ago. We have two adult children, and our first grandchild was born in April 2024. We understand that we enjoy the privileges of health, home and love. We are interested in going many places in Europe, South America, Asia, Australia, other Pacific Islands, and the USA.
