First of all, Scarborough is the best community anywhere in the world we have lived! It is about 45 minutes south of central Cape Town, near the Cape of Good Hope national park and the penguin colony in Simon's Town.
Scarborough is an eco-village surrounded by fynbos wilderness areas and full of conscious minded digital nomad families, and just generally cool people. If you go to one of the coffee shops or local restaurants you are almost guaranteed a fascinating conversation with someone new. It is a very friendly and welcoming community, with several world-class surf breaks (shhhh that's a well-kept secret!).
It is super safe with local security, cameras on the roads in and out, and an active community watch group, to the point where our kids run around town with their friends alone. From our house you can walk to the beach, cafes, and local grocers that are full of organic farm-fresh produce and gourmet treats, or go to the end of the street and watch zebra and bontebok graze in the Cape of Good Hope nature reserve.
The house itself is new and bright with spectacular views from nearly every room. We have carefully chosen everything in it to have a beachy modern bohemian vibe. And we have 200mb Fiber Optic internet with full solar system and battery backup, to keep you connected and working. I love this home and community, everything about it in my view is perfect!
The space
. There are three bedrooms, one on the top floor where the open kitchen and living space is, with a large spa-like bathroom with bath tub and shower. Then two bedrooms are on the lower level that opens to another lounge with fireplace. Both levels have decks with lovely ocean views and many windows to bring in the fresh ocean air. Actually that is one of the things I love most about this area is the fresh air coming off the Antarctic circulation or from the fynbos field, supposedly it is some of the cleanest air in the world and I feel like I can breathe deeper there than anywhere else in the world.
Guest access
There are a lot of stairs, a flight of stairs to get from the carport up to the house, then the main living area is another floor above. Personally I like having a lot of stairs as it gives us exercise every day, and gives great views, but I understand it isn't for everyone. There is a guest cottage at the back of the property we rent separately, so the driveway and entrance is shared.
Notes
The laundry area is on the ground floor off the carport and is shared with the guest house. We keep it locked and our housekeeper has the key, so normally we charge for her time to give access to the space to unlock and lock up again, or she can come do the laundry and a clean, but we could provide a key for longer stays that want to do laundry on their own. Even though we have a battery backup it will not power the stove and oven, so during loadshedding you can cook on the gas braai outside.

Neighbourhood
The beach is about a 10 minute walk down the main road to the beach park, or 15-20 mins to walk along the reserve fence and down to the Milkwood forest and boardwalk over the river. The river that flows into the beach there is red from the tannins in the Fynbos above, but is very clean. There is a Saturday farmers market at the recycling center and community garden and it trades off each week for which farm is bringing produce and what they have, and it also normally sells out quite quickly, so best to go early.
Getting to my home
Scarborough has one road in and out, and our house is at the corner of the main road, and fully paved access, so very easy to get to. Noordhoek is about 15 minutes by car, as is Simon's Town over Red Hill.
Nearest airport
Scarborough is about a 45 minute drive from Cape Town International Airport or slightly more to the CBD.
Getting around
I would recommend renting a car in this area, to be able to explore, but it is possible to get Ubers or taxi service to go further away and everything in town is walking distance. The red double decker busses tourist do drive through town regularly, but I don't know if they would stop or how to flag them down, you would need to contact the company to find out.

Hey there! I'm Crystal Stranger, a tax expert and a passionate traveler. Together with my scientist husband Andre, who's always on the lookout for the next great wave, and our adventurous daughters, Synne (10) and Timea (7), we're living our dream of exploring the world. When not on the beach, you'll find me and the girls immersed in our love for horses, competing in jumping and dressage wherever our travels take us.
Through my work, I help businesses navigate the maze of international tax laws. It's a role that keeps me on my toes and connects me with entrepreneurs worldwide. And Andre builds advanced weather models. But beyond work, our family thrives on cultural exchanges and discovering new perspectives.
Looking forward to swap homes and stories with fellow travelers like you!
