We live in an old "Queenslander" style cottage on 5 acres (2 ha) surrounded by bush and with a large dam that is lovely to swim in. We are three minutes out of Samford village with shops and cafes, and 30 minutes from the Brisbane CDB.
The space
Our house is an old Queenslander style cottage, approximately 100 years old but newly restored and with a recently renovated kitchen and bathroom. It is cosy, homely and full of character. The view from the deck across the dam and paddock is beautiful - the house faces north and captures the best light and breezes.
The house has three bedrooms and one bathroom (plus a second toilet in the laundry). One bedroom has a queen bed, one has a double bed and one has a baby's cot. We also have a spare king single mattress that can go in the baby's room or in the study if more sleeping space is needed.
There is also a cosy living room with wood burning fireplace, dining room opening onto the deck, and kitchen overlooking the vegie garden. There is reverse cycle AC/heating in the living areas and bedrooms as well. We have a piano in the dining room which you are welcome to play.
Outside there is a woodfired pizza oven, outdoor shower (perfect for a rinse off after a swim), fruit trees, vegetable garden, chicken coop, and swing and sandpit for the kids. The house yard is fenced off from the dam, though if you have small children who are climbers you will need to be mindful of safety.
We have a one year old so have plenty of kids' toys and books, and all the essentials for a baby/young children.
Guest access
It is a one storey house but with a few stairs up to the front door, and inside there are small changes in levels between some rooms. It may be difficult for people with mobility issues and not wheelchair friendly unfortunately.
Notes
You will need a car to get around, public transport in the area is very limited. We are happy to discuss swapping our car - we have an electric vehicle with fast charger installed at home so you would not have petrol costs. We also have camping gear you can borrow if you like.
We have 7 chickens (you will have fresh eggs every morning when they are laying). The chickens are very low maintenance and only need food and water topped up every 3 days or so, and have an automatic door so you don't need to shut them in at night. If you come for a longer stay and want to go away, my parents are close by and can feed the chickens so you are not tied down.

Neighbourhood
Samford Valley is a semi-rural area, where most blocks are 5 acres (2 ha) with a few remaining large farms. Samford village is 3 minutes drive away from our house, and has cafes, bakeries, a supermarket, a pub and a couple of restaurants. There is also a park with a great playground if you have kids. The village can be busy with day trippers on the weekend but during the week is very peaceful.
There are a number of walks along pony trails and nearby creeks that you can do directly from our house, or within a short drive there are many other creeks, waterholes and rainforest walks. D'Aguilar National Park with hiking tracks at Mt Glorious and Mt Nebo, in lush rainforest, is 20 minutes drive away.
We are in a subtropical region, so summers are hot, while winters are cold at night and beautifully warm with blue skies in the day.
The Sunshine Coast beaches are about 1-1.5 hours' drive north. Brisbane CBD is 30 minutes drive away. To the west and south, a couple of hours' drive away, there are beautiful mountain ranges with great hiking and a lovely wine region.

Liz & Alex
We are a couple in our thirties with a one year old daughter. For now we are most interested in short-term exchanges close to home (Australia, NZ, south-east Asia) but in a couple of years we would love to start looking at bigger adventures. But no matter where you are from, please do get in touch if you're interested!
People Like Us is the world's most trusted home exchange community. We believe in sharing, trust, generosity, respect, communication, equality, cooperation, honesty, hospitality, friendship, flexibility and adventure. We take pride in our homes and we care about the environment in which we live: our village, city, country and our planet. We care about the ethos of home exchange and we do it because we love the experience and the friendships that it generates.
