General overview

Our home is a cozy 2 bedroom house located right across the road from the ocean. There are walking trails in the woods behind our house and lots of nature to explore.

The space

The whole top floor is one level and is accessed by a ramp or stairs in the backyard. The laundry is in the basement and there is a washer and dryer. There is also an additional bedroom in the basement as well as a seating area and another propane fireplace. We will be staying at our cottage next door (yes, our summer cottage is next door haha!) all this summer so the house availability is wide open all summer long for any type of exchange. Other than a few weekends here and there, we will be around the property all summer so we can guide you around or hang out if that interests you. We don't have laundry at our cottage so we come to the basement of the house occasionally to do laundry but we can coordinate times that work. The house is situated on 1 acre of land. We're set back from the road a bit and there is a backyard to enjoy as well. We're still slowly developing the property so we have the start of some small walking trails through the trees in our backyard. There are chickens a little on the land but far enough away that the rooster doesn't wake you up in the morning. You can enjoy them all you like but there is no requirement for you to care for them or anything. The ocean out front is really the main attraction of the property. It is always active with seabirds, fishermen, boats and if you're lucky - whales and tuna.

Notes

We also have 2 kayaks for use for those who are interested. We are located in a sheltered harbour and it's a beautiful way to see the ocean. You can kayak along the shore and look down at the sea life and view the town from an interesting vantage point. The ocean is also a great place to snorkel and swim. We have wet suits that can be borrowed if our sizes are similar. You can actually forage for mussels just of the wharf if that suits you. We also have a sauna which is located across the road right on the wharf so you can practice a thermal cycle using the ocean as your cold dip. The sauna is wood-fired so we could light it for you or you can light it yourself if you're comfortable with wood stoves.

Neighbourhood

We are in a rural fishing village. So there is a convenience store that sells the very basics about 1 minute drive away. Other groceries can be bought about 20 minutes away in larger towns. Fishing villages are usually stretched out along the shore and thus there is no hub or downtown area. The closest eateries are about a 10 minute drive in either direction. There is a local butcher within a 5 minute drive though so with a little bit of planning, there are ways to eat very well here. If you're here in the summer, there are amply opportunities for fishing and berry picking. You can also have access to my garden and greenhouse for the basics. There is a beautiful waterfall near the butcher with a short hike. There are also lots of logging roads and unmarked trails for exploring. We are in a very rural and rustic area so you won't get the usual tourist bureaus or helpful signs. But luckily, the locals are friendly and chatty.

Getting to my home

You will need a vehicle to get here and to get around as there is no public transit. If you are driving to the island, you can take either the Argentia ferry from Nova Scotia which will land about 1 hour away from us. Or you can take the Port Aux Basque ferry which is about 8 hours away. Marine Atlantic is the company that runs both the ferries.

Nearest airport

The nearest airport is about 75 minutes away in the Capital city to St. John's

Joy

We are close family of 3 who are very versatile and easy-going. My husband (Malcolm) is a writer which allows us the flexibility and the freedom to travel and spend time with our beautiful son (Ulysses). We traveled extensively before the birth of our son and are just now beginning to travel with him.
