Neighbourhood
We live in a quiet, family-friendly area surrounded by greenery. Out front is a safe, grassy car-free zone, perfect for kids to play, and there’s a small playground just down the street.
You’ll find grocery stores (Plus and Lidl) and a few takeaway options close by. A short ride by bike, bus, or car takes you into town, where you’ll find a shopping mall, plenty of cafés, restaurants, lunch spots, cinemas, parks, playgrounds, swimming pool, and cozy pubs for an evening out.
Getting to my home
Our home is perfectly located for exploring the Netherlands!
We’re just 30 minutes by bus to Amsterdam and about 40 minutes to Schiphol Airport (by bus and train). Nearby are charming towns like Edam (famous for its cheese market), Volendam (a traditional fishing village), and Hoorn, all close to the beautiful IJsselmeer, the former Zuiderzee.
It’s easy to get around by car or public transport, and we offer free off-street parking at home.
For travel planning:
🚌 Public transport: 9292.nl/en/planner
🚘 Driving routes: anwb.nl/verkeer/routeplanner
Nearest airport
Amsterdam Schiphol Airport is about 30-45 minutes away.
Getting Around
Everything here is flat and easy to explore on foot or by bike, and we have some bikes available for guests to use. Depending on our own travel plans, our 7-seater car may also be available.
There’s a direct bus to Amsterdam from the end of our street, and the train station (with a direct link to the airport) is just a short ride or walk away.
You can venture further by car, but honestly, bikes and public transport will take you almost everywhere you want to go.
We really do have it all 🙂

People Like Us Local Guide
Meet for a drink / coffee/ meal, offer tips about the local area; where to go, what to see and do, especially for/with families and/or gluten free needs (celiac/coeliac).
Wow, the weather was great! Very sweet I was allowed to stay a weekend in Katherine's fantastic house :-) my daughter Mia and I enjoyed the comfortable house and this time especially the garden! The sun was shining, it was nice and warm. Great to wake up and have a cup of coffee in the garden. I even lay in the hammock for a while. Katherine had prepared her bicycle with child seat for us to use. I cycled to Edam, Volendam and Monnickendam. A great weekend. Thank you very much and we will keep in touch.
Katherine, Hans, Simon, and Henry beautifully demonstrate the spirit of PLU. We came to their home as hospitality guests and quickly became friends. Having them take us around to several smaller towns and villages was a special highlight of our time in the Netherlands. And Katherine’s assistance with transport was far beyond our expectations.
We were especially impressed with Simon and Henry being at ease with strangers in their home and also sharing their daily lives with us. We hope to share our Kentucky home with them someday and extend the same kindness shown to us.
We very much enjoyed our stay in Purmerend at Katherine and Han’s house, an easy 30 minute drive into Amsterdam for sightseeing or good local transport available nearby. Purmerend itself is a charming town.
A great base away from the crowds and chaos of Amsterdam. We especially enjoyed unwinding each evening with a glass of wine in such a warm, comfortable space after a full day of sightseeing.
Katherine is a great communicator and was amazing with local insight with navigating train system advising us in advance of connections to Purmerend as we coming from Brussels, it made everything seamless and stress free.
Tulip season was in full swing during our visit, the fields the colours were extraordinary. Most fields are privately owned, so the view is generally from the road but there were a number of professional garden to visit in the area to visit.
It is a very lovely house, nice neighbourhood, good location, and amazing hosts!! We loved our stay in their house, we felt welcomed and taken care of. Katherine even left us a baby play mat for our 2-months old - which he loved very much and some arts and craft materials that kept our toddler occupied ❤️ thank you so much Katherine, Hans, Simon and Henry!! 🥰
On arrival we were met by Katherine at the bus stop which was lovely. The family stayed to greet us which was appreciated before departing on their holiday.
The house was well equited, and the family had set up a beautiful xmas tree, box of goodies and xmas gift left under the tree. We were very spoilt.
Katherine's communication was excellent and they went the extra mile arranging an extra bike for us to enjoy the surrounding areas . We really enjoyed cycling to the villages.
Katherine and Hans made the exchange an extremely enjoyable and straight forward exchange.
It was a pleasure meeting them and staying in their lovely cosy home.
We look forward in hosting Katherine Hans and family at our place.
It was a pleasure to stay at Katherine and Hans place. They made the exchange easy , see previous comments.
Katherine was very hospitable and friendly. It felt like meeting up with old friends.
The house and exchange was a perfect fit to end our holiday on
Thank you Katherine ,Hans and family.
The home of Katherine was a true paradise home. Everything so comfortable. Easy parking and a good neighbourhood. The house and garden are spacious and with great atmosphere. I enjoyed staying in and cooking, watching movies and relaxing. All is possible. You can reach the city center easily or take a train to Hoorn for example. Great place to discover Noord Holland. Happy to exchange again :) thanks for all!
Katherine and her family were absolutely wonderful hosts, and their home was just perfect, spacious, comfortable, and in a fantastic location. We were greeted with the warmest welcome, complete with fresh flowers, delicious chocolate, and even a homemade cake! Honestly, can it get any better?
The children were thrilled with all the new toys to explore, and the house had more than enough space for our family of five. Everything was spotless, and the shower felt like something straight out of a luxury hotel!
Purmerend turned out to be such a pleasant surprise. A charming city center full of great shops, Prumerend museum and a fantastic swimming pool. Amsterdam was an easy trip if you wanted the buzz of the city, but we also enjoyed exploring the surrounding area: a wonderful cheese market in Edam, plus visits to Volendam, Marken, and Monnickendam.
Communication with Katherine was excellent throughout our stay. She gave us great recommendations and made sure we had everything we needed. We truly couldn’t have asked for better hosts, a lovelier home, or a more welcoming town. Highly recommended, both the hosts and Purmerend itself!
What a wonderful reception we received from Katherine, Hans, Simon and Henry in Purmerend, next door to Amsterdam.
Katherine's house has it all and our hosts were so welcoming. This beautiful family took us out to visit the nearby tourist towns. We felt right away their pride and pleasure in bringing yet another PLU couple to visit their quaint corner of the Netherlands.
We were pleasantly surprised as to how easy and fast it was to get to and from Amsterdam, which we visited daily during our 3-day hospitality stay. Katherine and Henry even meet us at the bus stop upon our arrival (service with a smile!!).
Henry was so proud to show us the 'Green house' and waterfall in Zaandam and Simon perfectly translated the very Dutch menu at a delicious restaurant where we had the pleasure to share a meal with our hosts.
Thanks again Katherine and Hans for everything and we look forward to receiving you in Quebec!
Ian and I had an absolutely wonderful few days with Hans, Katherine, Simon and Henry. It was like being with family. The appreciated extras like being transported to more convenient hubs was super helpful.
Seeing special tourist locations with the family was quite unexpected but so special. There were many stories, visits to the local market and dinners around the family table.
Our room on the top floor was spacious with a screen set up for Netflix. This provided a separation for the family to carry on their daily activities. Transport via bus into Central Amsterdam is easy on the local bus and achieved in 30mins.
Thank you so much Katherine, Hans, Simon and Henry for the special cupcakes and your wonderful hospitality. We will miss you all and hope to see you in Australia in the future.
Fantastic family home, close to so many great places to visit.
Very safe neighbourhood.
Was definitely a home away from home.
Katherine was so great with communication and would HIGHLY RECOMMEND an exchange if you’re interested in going to The Netherlands.
Katherine, Hans, Simon and Henry were fantastic guests! It was nice to know that our house and our cats were in good hands. I would love to welcome them again, and eating ice cream together seems like a lot of fun! Always welcome
Katherine and her Family are amazing guests. Top communication all throughout the exchange, respectful of the space, and they cleaned the flat - it even feels cleaner than before the exchange 😅 They followed our requests and we dont have any problem at all. We’d be happy to welcome them again to our house any time!
Katherine knows hospitality :) we stayed in touch with what's app and really felt connected. She invited me and my daughter Mia in her warm home before they drove to my house. Katherine and her boys had home made sweets and we got to know each other. A true people like us spirit! Thanks for everything :-)
Katherine was the first PLU guest in my home. We hit it off and had wonderful conversations, walks, and meals together. She’s welcome back anytime and I’m happy to know I have a place in the Netherlands to visit!
Katherine was a wonderful guest. She was considerate of our home, so nice to have around and we enjoyed some time together. I look forward to my journey to the Netherlands in the near future.
Katherine was a delightful guest to host! She communicated well before her visit so I knew when to expect her and I found her to be a warm and considerate guest during her stay. I loved showing her around my city and learning a little bit about her life and the lifestyle from another side of the world! I welcome her and/or her and family back anytime in the future.
Katherine, Hans, Simon, & Henry,
Hosting you was an absolute delight! From the start, communication with you was seamless and friendly, making the whole process smooth and enjoyable. It was clear how much care and thought you put into every aspect of your stay 💛
You treated our home as if it were your own, leaving it not only spotless but even better than we had left it. We loved the thoughtful little touches, like the new clothes pins you brought 🥰 they were so practical and kind!
The delicious and funny treats you left behind added such a warm and personal touch to your departure.. they brought big smiles to our faces. We’re thrilled to know you enjoyed our home, the terrace, and all that Barcelona and its surroundings have to offer ☀️
Thank you for being such respectful, thoughtful, and generous guests. We’d gladly welcome you back anytime and wholeheartedly recommend you to the PLU community. Wishing you many more amazing home exchanges!
Warm regards,
Lucia, Nico, Felipe & Pau
Katherine and her family were extremely kind guests.
Very careful of my house. Everything went well, I hope their stay will make you want to come back and stay a little longer!
Katherine, Hans and their lovely boys stayed in our home for 5 nights. In the run up to the exchange Katherine’s communication was clear and it helped to make things run smoothly. Katherine and her family treated our home with respect and left it exactly as they found it.
We were lucky to meet them while they were here and that was an added bonus as it was like we’d all known each other before! I would thoroughly recommend Katherine and her family as exchange partners.
Nicolas, Caroline and their family were wonderful guests. Communication before, during and on departure was easy and thorough. We were sorry not to be able to meet them, but hope to see them in Lille some time in the future. We haven’t been home since they left, but I know through the messages and photos that Caroline sent, as well as feedback from the next family in our home, that they left everything neat and tidy and ready for the following guests. We’d happily exchange with this family again- maybe in Lille next time 😊
Thanks for coming and we’re happy you enjoyed our home and area so much 🤩
Anna and Mia are wonderful guests. We've done one previous (sim) exchange and this time we were able to offer them a hospitality stay while we were away for the weekend. Communication is easy and friendly, we enjoy seeing updates of them having fun in our home/ garden and local area while they are here and they always leave our home clean and tidy. The thoughtful and generous gifts left for us are the only real sign they were here at all :-) We'd be happy to exchange with them again and I know we'll stay in touch.
Doris and Johnny were wonderful hospitality guests. They fit into our family life easily and we all enjoyed spending time together, learning about each other’s lives and travels.
Their home in Kentucky sounds fabulous and we hope to visit them there someday too! We are sure that anyone who stays with Doris and Johnny (or in their home) would have a wonderful experience.
So happy to be able to call these great people friends 😊
Joy, Craig and their friends were a pleasure to host. We were very happy to meet them and get to show them around our home before we left, and they took excellent care of everything. Very clean, respectful guests, who didn’t mind too much that we kept popping home for forgotten items 😉. We are happy to hear they enjoyed their stay, and we enjoyed the little treats they left for us on departure. We’d happily invite them to our home again 😊
Although in the process of a complete renovation, Anne Marie welcomed us to her home and we felt comfortable and at ease the whole time. With Luna & Lily (the cats) for company, we enjoyed our stay in this lovely home, close to the beach, tulip fields and sweet little towns. Not far from our own home, we were happy to have the comforts of Anne Marie’s home while still within easy reach of our own. We really enjoyed our stay and would be happy to exchange with this family again (or meet for an ice cream together at their local spot 😊).
Shelley and her family were very respectful guests. They left our home clean and tidy- like they’d never even be here. Communication was great throughout and we’re happy they enjoyed our home, garden and local area 😊
Shelley’s family’s apartment on the outskirts of Munich was lovely. Tidy, clean, warm, comfortable- everything we could hope for on an exchange. We were welcomed with very thoughtful local specialities on arrival and communication was great throughout. We really enjoyed our stay and visiting Munich (the trick was getting our kids away from all the toys to go out and explore 😉). We’re happy to have been Shelley’s first exchange partners and wish them many years of happy exchanges ahead 😊
Thank you so much Katherine! We’re glad you enjoyed your stay here and we are very lucky that you were our first exchange partners! We learned a lot from you 🥰
Feedback for Megan·Non-Simultaneous exchange·4 nights
We enjoyed meeting Megan, Roger and their daughter Emma as we welcomed them to our home on arrival. They left everything neat and tidy and we were happy to hear they enjoyed their stay. Communication throughout has been easy and enjoyable. We also enjoyed the thoughtful NZ themed gifts they left for us on departure and hope to see them in NZ in the future.
Feedback for Kathleen & Wim·Non-Simultaneous exchange·7 nights
We had a wonderful Christmas week at Kathleen and Wim’s immaculate home. It is spacious, clean, warm and very welcoming. Everything we needed for a happy and comfortable stay was provided or available nearby. Communication before and throughout our stay was great. Such kind, helpful people. We were able to drive and explore further afield to places like Brugge, Ieper/Ypres, Lille and enjoyed the local area too- beaches, boulevards, smaller towns. We’d happily visit again, perhaps in summer so we can really enjoy the beaches 😊).
Anna & Mia were perfect guests. We kept in contact throughout our sim-exchange with suggestions and tips on both sides. Before the exchange our communication was friendly and timely too. They left our home so clean and tidy- it’s like they’d never even been.
We enjoyed Anna’s home in Dordrecht. It was in a good location for exploring (we used our car) the local cities of Dordrecht, Breda and Biesbosch National Park. Her home was comfortable for the four of us for a few nights in this local sim-exchange. We got to meet Anna & little Mia which made it even better 🥰 Thanks Anna, for sharing your home with us!
Feedback for Steinunn·Non-Reciprocal exchange·3 nights
Steinunn and her family were wonderful guests! Our communication was friendly and efficient, and they left our home perfectly clean and tidy. We enjoyed keeping in touch during their stay and hearing what they thought of our home and local area. We would happily welcome them back any time and highly recommend them as guests. We also appreciated the thoughtful gifts and kind notes you left for us :-)
Feedback for Gérald & Édith·Hospitality exchange·3 nights
Gérald & Édith were wonderful guests! They were considerate of our time and space and very generous in taking us all out for dinner one night! We enjoyed meeting them and hearing about their travels and lives. We are happy to have made these new friends. They were very at ease getting around independently and it sounds like they filled their time well and really enjoyed their visit to our beautiful part of the world. We hope to be able to meet our friends again in their home at some point and explore there as well ;-)
Feedback for Christina·Hospitality exchange·3 nights
Christina and Ian were wondeful guests! So kind, patient and interested in everything. We enjoyed their company and showing them around our special part of the world. They were very respectful of our home and time and a pleasure to have around - they just fit right in to our family and routines. We look forward to seeing them again in future and would always happily welcome them bak to our home :-)
Rita was a very kind and generous host! She showed me around her lovely part of the world and gave me great travel advice for my onward journey. She was also very flexible when I had to change my plans and move on a day earlier than expected. Rita's home is sweet and comfortable with everything you need - a lovely little beach cottage, only 2 blocks from the beach. Thank you Rita! I hope we can host you before too long too!
Lila was a very generous and fun host! Her home is so comfortable and in a wonderful area - easy to explore (with a car) this beautiful part of the world. I also got to meet Lila's partner and her family and they were all so welcoming. They even included me in their Passover Seder. It felt like catching up with an old friend. I'd highly recommend Lila (and her family) for an exchange in either direction. I hope we can host you at our place bnefore too long too, Lila!
Anne’s home is lovely. Very welcoming, relaxing space, cosy and comfortable. The 2 swimming pools (1 for families, 1 adults only) as well as hot tub and sauna are a bonus in a beautiful part of the world. Anne is a generous and welcoming host! She showed me around and welcomed me into her home on my solo trip. It felt like meeting a friend. 😊
Feedback for Lucia·Non-Reciprocal exchange·10 nights
Lucia and Nico’s tidy 8th floor apartment (with lift) was great for our stay near Barcelona. It fit 4 of us (2 adults, 2 kids) comfortably and had everything we needed; kitchen, 2 bathrooms, comfortable living space and dining area, washing machine, dishwasher. The location was great for exploring Barcelona, the coast and further afield (Girona, for example). Access to the rooftop pool and deck was great (although too cold in December/January of course). Our car was helpful (free parking on the street), but public transport in the area was also easy to manage for our days in the city. Lucia generously left us some lovely treats for our arrival 🥰 She also made a great welcome book for us and was easy to communicate with both before and during our stay. Highly recommend an exchange this lovely family.
Feedback for christine·Non-Simultaneous exchange·2 nights
Christine’s home is neat, tidy and well-equipped for a comfortable stay, year round. We enjoyed the quiet location and easy driving to nearby towns and attractions. It was lovely to meet Christine and she generously let us have the whole place to ourselves during our 2 night hospitality stay. We hope to welcome you to our home in Purmerend (NL) in 2025, too Christine!
Feedback for Gillian·Non-Simultaneous exchange·5 nights
Gillian's home was very comfortable and conveniently located for some Irish exploration. Our kids loved having access to her kids' toys and books and it made it easy for us to travel, not having to take everything with us. Having a rental car was great. Would have been tricky getting around otherwise. We had a great time and even got to meet Gillian and her family which was wonderful!
Feedback for Jacqueline·Simultaneous exchange·5 nights
We had a wonderful stay in Umina. Jacquie and James’ house is lovely, with everything we needed, and so clean and comfortable. It was a real home away from home, and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and the surrounding areas.
Feedback for Jacqueline·Simultaneous exchange·5 nights
Jacquie and James were great guests in our home. Very easy to communicate with, and they left everything clean and tidy and ready for us to relax after our long trip home.
