Neighbourhood

Beaches Rottingdean Beach (27 min drive) is in a quaint village with a fish and chip shop on the seafront. There are rock pools for the kids to explore. The famous art deco Saltdean Lido and Brighton Marina are close to Rottingdean and can be reached on foot on the undercliff walk in each direction. Tidemills (20 min drive) is our closest beach. There is a historical site there and when the tide goes out there is a small sandy area. It’s also a popular early morning swimming spot. Cuckmere Haven (30 mins drive) is quintessentially Sussex. As well as the cafe, you can hire canoes, kayaks, and SUP. From the car park, it is about a 20-minute scenic walk down the river to the beach. The path is also accessible for strollers or wheelchairs. Hollywell Beach (35 min) in Eastbourne has a cafe and a small sandy area. Beachy Head is also close by on the coast road. Camber Sands near Rye is the closest real sandy beach to us. It takes just over an hour to get there and can be busy on summer days. walking Ashdown Forest & The South Downs Way are the best options for those seeking all-day walking. Laughton Woods, Barcombe Mills (some people do wild swimming here) & Horsted Green Park are all a short drive from us and are relatively quick family-friendly walks. Abbots Wood & Friston Forest both offer a good amount of shade in warm weather. The Cuckoo Trail is accessible for strollers, wheelchairs, and bikes. It’s also shady. The Firle Beacon walk has stunning panoramic views of the coast and inland. The walk can also be combined with a stop at the Ram Inn, which is a great rural pub with top-notch food. gardens Charleston (12 min drive) has a stunning garden (free to visit) as well as house tours and exhibitions. There is an Italian cafe on site too. One Garden Brighton (21 min drive) is also free to visit. Sheffield Park (24 min drive) has gardens built around their lakes. Opposite the park is Bluebell Steam Railway. Wakehurst (36min drive) is part of the Kew Gardens & has longer and shorter trails. Batemans, Nymans and Scotney Castle (all National Trust properties) are all slightly further away but well worth the visit. for the adults We have a growing collection of vineyards in the area, with some of the best-tasting facilities in the UK. Bolney (30min drive), Ridgeview (25min drive), Rathfinny (21min drive), Albourne (27min drive) are all worth a visit. Many other local vineyards are open for tasting or special events. Beak Brewery and ABYSS Brewing in Lewes open to the public for drinks and street food at the weekends. You will find a cider barn at Middle Farm Shop. The world-class Glyndebourne Opera House is just a few minutes down the road from us. A day at Glyndebourne really is something special to remember! Lewes (5min drive), Alfriston (20min drive), and Brighton (30 min drive) all have independent shops and cafes and are great to explore. For the kids Raystede Center For Animal Welfare (3 min drive) has a walking trail, cafe, and a playpark. Opposite(ish) the entrance to Raystede is Ringmer Gliding Club where you can park the car and watch the gliders taking off and landing. There are many other farmer’s markets in the area - the opening times are seasonal, so best to do a search based on the dates of your stay. The Ringmer village butcher and baker sell a great selection of local and homemade products - you’ll find them next to Morrisons in the center of the village. other ideas Pells Pool freshwater outdoor swimming pool in Lewes is popular and you do need to book well in advance.
