General overview
We live in rural Somerset. on the foot of the Mendip hills (AONB). We have a cosy 4/5 bedroomed house, with a large open plan kitchen / lounge, diner, separate living room, playroom and decent sized garden. We are right in the centre of the village, with most things a stones throw away.
The village of Winscombe offers everything you might need in a traditional English countryside village, including two gastro pubs within walking distance, cafes, chemist, grocery stores, play park, cycling route and lots of fabulous walking routes. We are right on the Strawberry Line - a traffic free line that runs from the Mendips to the sea.
We are located around 30 mins south of vibrant Bristol - a truly creative and energetic city, with plenty going on, year round. We are a comfortable distance from the historic city of Bath, Cheltenham / Gloucester, Stonehenge, and Glastonbury - home of the world famous festival. As well as being the gateway to Devon and Cornwall, and Wales (Cardiff only a 45 min drive).
You can get to Cheddar in 8 mins, Axbridge in 5, and if you fancy a coastal walk - Weston Super Mare, Clevedon and Brean are a short drive away.

Getting around
Everything needed within walking distance - a car would be advised for venturing further afield, but the public transport links are decent. We do have two cars, and have been able to insure guests on it, for a charge, in the past - may be an option if car hire is prohibitive.
It was an absolute pleasure exchanging homes with The Bos Family. They have a beautiful home in gorgeous Somerset. The home was perfectly equipped for our family of 5. It is beautifully remodeled with a lovely kitchen, bathrooms, and rooms. The location is perfect and walking distance to shops, restaurants, nature walks, and the market! We met several people in the town who were so friendly and lovely. Elizabeth was amazing at communicating and was so kind to organize a fabulous list of local activities for us to explore! We travelled to Bath, Wells, Glastonbury, Stonehenge, Lands End, Swanage, St. Ives and Wales - all a close distance from their lovely home. We had a wonderful holiday thank you to the Bos family and would definitely recommend staying in their beautiful home.
We had a wonderful stay at Elizabeth’s home. We enjoyed visiting the local area and traveling a bit throughout England. We loved walking to the grocery store and around town. Elizabeth was a wonderful host and communication was easy before and during our stay. She is super kind and thoughtful and her home is wonderfully situated and a great place for families. Thank you so much for welcoming us and hopefully we’ll meet up in person one day!
We loved hosting the Bos Family!! We spent a day with the family before we left town and got to watch their kiddos thoroughly enjoyed playing in the pool and our grandkids' playroom. We were so happy we got to see that since there was barely any evidence of it when we returned home. The house was neat and tidy and ready for us to move right back into after two weeks of camping, which was very much appreciated. Communication was excellent, before and during the exchange. Most of all, we felt we had made new friends and can't wait to gather again with them when we stay in their UK home next spring. The Bos's are welcome again anytime!
Adrienne and Tom’s home is beautiful - really picture perfect, with everything you would need to feel at home. It’s opposite a beautiful park - and the neighbourhood itself is lovely, with amazing views out to the harbour - and the palm trees in the background. In terms of location, there are plenty of restaurants in the local area(some of the best Italian restaurants we’ve ever eaten at!), with everything else you would want to visit in LA / California within a reasonable driving distance.
We visited lots of beaches in the Orange County area (Laguna, Newport, Huntington) as well as Santa Monica / Venice. It’s around an hour from LAX, and Anaheim, and similar to Hollywood and all the main sights you might want to see there.
The house itself has comfortable beds, plenty of toys and a lovely play house for the kids, a beautiful garden, and plenty of space to work remotely, should you need you. We had a blast, and would highly recommend swapping this house for your next California adventure! 😊
The Newbold family have become friends. Adrienne and I kept in touch the entire time, helping each other out with any questions as well as recommendations of places to go. They left our house in immaculate condition, with lots of little notes and drawings from the kids to our kids. We shared photos and compared trips and it gave us such joy to swap and share each others homes. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend the Newbolds, they are lovely people, sincere and really look after your property like it is their own!
Wow, what a two weeks we have had. June and Michael’s house is wonderful. And they were the most hospitable and thoughtful hosts. Excellently located - you can reach beautiful beaches, downtown San Diego, or major attractions such as San Diego Zoo, the Birch Aquarium and legoland. The house itself has everything you could wish for, with a beautiful swimming pool, comfortable bedrooms, a fully equipped kitchen and a playroom bursting with toys and a craft cupboard that my daughter spent the majority of her time in! We were lucky enough to meet June and Michael, and consider them friends that feel like family. I’m so glad we signed up to PLU, our first experience has been amazing. Thank you both, we look forward to welcoming you to to UK in May next year!
Thanks, Liz! We loved meeting all of you! Mila's art is now displayed throughout our home. :-)
It will be so nice to see you again next May!
Be well!
Molly and her family stayed in our home for just over two weeks for a globe. Unfortunately, we didn’t get to meet in person, as we had already left for our trip - but communication from the get go was great. We had a video call, and also lots of exchanges via what’s app, toe fine tune everything before hand and the same level of communication during their stay.
Molly and her family helped to get our house back into good shape after their visit, as we had back to back guests without us being around - which really made the whole process a lot smoother. I would definitely recommend Molly and her family as guests, you won’t be disappointed. They also have a beautiful home in New York - unfortunately the exchange didn’t work for us this time, due to how long we were in NY, but we’ll keep
It in mind for the future!
