General overview
A "Pueblo Magico" of Mexico, known for its outdoor wall murals.
Typical Mexican village. Encountered by the Spanish in 1531. Private art galleries, both Mexican and international restaurants, and the all-important central plaza. Hiking trails up the hill.
We are in the tropics, but at 1,700 metres (5,100 feet). So we have rather good weather all year around.
Ajijic is a winter (or summer) getaway for Canadians and Americans, and is a popular retirement area.
We are driving distance to Guadalajara (1h), the seaside Manzanillo (3.5h) and Pacific coast (4-6h), and the old colonial cities Guanajuato (4h), Queretero, Zacatecas and Morelia.
We often book in advance, so you can talk us in fall for 2025 and 2026.
Our calendar is not up-to-date, our property for you is usually April to December.
The space
We call it the Mirador Loft. Architecturally designed "casita", all new construction in 2017.
Mainly contemporary style, total indoor and balcony space 74 sq m (796 sq ft) on second floor.
Spacious open concept living room/dining room/kitchen. Full kitchen with granite counters. Kitchen cupboards and doors and closets are all exotic-looking solid “parote” hardwood. The living room and balcony face Ajijic Centro and lake (but obscured by buildings and trees).
The one queen bedroom is a few steps up from the living room, facing our professionally landscaped garden with mangos, bananas, and hummingbirds. Queen bed, brick cupola and ceiling fan, ensuite washroom with shower.
High-ceilinged living room with ceiling fan, window blinds. Wi-Fi and a 50” TV. Air conditioning is not necessary, as it catches whatever on-shore breezes there may be.
There is a shared roof patio for great views of the lake and sunset, shared with other guests.
There is also a recreational pool and patio shared with other guests.
Guest access
The secure property has one front gate which serves the owners' Casa Grande, another casita, and another apartment.
You will get two sets of two keys each.
This Mirador Loft is 1 story above street level.
Grab bars at toilet and shower.
Notes
There is good day-hiking on the many trails on the mountain a 12 minute walk behind us.
If this Mirador Loft is not available, we also have the one-bedroom Casita Grande, our own Casa Grande with one queen bedroom on this same property, and a large 3-bedroom Casa Colorado in West Ajijic. All are on PLU.
Whichever timing suits your preferences and our availabilities. Usually we have no availability in January to March.
The water is treated and potable.
There is a pool with solar heating.
Our cleaner comes in once per week, no fees for you.

Neighbourhood
We are in a typical Mexican neighbourhood. Ajijic is a typical lively and colorful Mexican village, except it is more prosperous and caters to foreigners with good restaurants, art galleries and shops.
The village is lakefront, but it is not at all like an ocean beach. The lake is healthy, but it is not popular for swimming.
Getting to my home
From Ajijic Plaza, walk 5 minutes up Calle Marcos Castellanos.
From Guadalajara or Chapala, take a bus or taxi.
Nearest airport
GDL (Guadalajara) airport is a 35 minute taxi ride.
Getting around
Since we are central, almost everything is within a 15 minute walk. There is a frequent bus service to neighboring towns of Chapala and Guadalajara.

People Like Us Local Guide
We are happy to have visitors on our terrace for conversation with coffee or drinks.
We stayed in Ramon's lovely casita for 2 weeks in October. Luckily for us, Ramon and Zeny were there for 2+ days before flying to our home so we got to meet them. They made dinner for us on arrival as most restaurants were closed, stocked the kitchen with breakfast food, and left a bottle of wine for us to enjoy watching the sunset on the rooftop patio. They are such a friendly, hospitable couple and we feel like we have made new lifelong friends!
The casita was perfect, very comfortable and clean, with enough kitchen wares to suit us. The swimming pool was lovely and a great place to sit around mid day. The garden is amazing, with so many beautiful flowers and shrubs! The casita was in a quiet location, but only a block from the main street. It only took 10 minutes or so to walk to the malecon, which we did every day and a 5 minute walk to the bus station. There was even a gluten-free bakery an 8 minute walk up the hill. They had excellent coffee and I was in heaven with gluten-free vegetarian empanadas and apple cake. We found that the little fruit and veggie store on the main street was great for quality and prices.
Ajijic is a lovely town and we'd love to go back. It's very laid back and has a plaza where locals meet. We did a lot of people watching there! There are so many wonderful restaurants and shops, most within a 10 minute walk. English is widely spoken. Most days, we walked the malecon by Lake Chapala. We left mid October and weather was perfect!
We took a bus (only 1 hour) into Guadalajara and stayed 2 nights there and took a tequila bus tour to the volcano, a distillery and the town of Tequila. What fun! Another day, we took a bus from Ajijic to Chapalla. It's much bigger and livelier, but we were happy to come home to Ajijic. Another day we went to San Juan Cosala, just 10 minutes away, where we spent 5 delicious hours at the adults-only Termal Cosala Hotel Spa. They had 7 whirlpools, some with red wine, lavender, oatmeal, rosemary, etc. and we topped it with a mud bath! I'd never had a mud bath and my skin was so soft after!
Thank you so much Ramon and Zeny!
Ramon and Zeny were perfect guests in our home. We had a once in a 100 year atmospheric river when they were here and they kept the storm drains clear. They looked after our home well! Thank you Ramon and Zeny!
We loved it. Comfortable, well-equipped. Snuggled into the forest. North Vancouver is a very nice neighborhood, and it was only a short trip to the Seabus to downtown Vancouver.
Ramon you and Zeny are a delightful couple. We really enjoyed meeting you before you left for Vancouver!
Bonnie and Alex were excellent, fun and enthusiastic guests. We spent a couple of days with them until we flew to their house.
