Neighbourhood
Our immediately neighborhood - there is a great park one block away (< 10min walk). The grocery store is just down the hill (1 min drive). Our local “downtown” is called Montrose and is very cute and walkable. There is a farmer’s market every Sunday morning. About 5min away is Descanso Gardens, a really nice botanical garden. There is a wonderful miniature train exhibit and a small ride on train for kids. If you’re into space travel, Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) is about 10 minutes down the street and you can sign up for a tour! There are a lot of great hiking trails all around our neighborhood and JPL. The mountains are beautiful but beware there is urban wildlife (bears, coyotes, mountain lions)! (So stay on trails)
Slightly further is Pasadena (15 min), Glendale (10 min), and downtown LA (~15-20 min but this varies with traffic). Pasadena is known for the Rose Bowl. Old Town Pasadena has lots of shopping and dining. It’s also the home of Cal Tech. For little kids, Kidspace museum in Pasadena is one of the best play spaces I’ve ever been to. There’s also the Southern California Museum (fully indoors) and Discovery Cube for slightly older children.
Disneyland is about 40 min - 1hr (or more). Universal Studios is 30 minutes. Griffith park and the LA Zoo are about 20 minutes (depending where in Griffith park, there could be traffic getting inside).
If beach is what you’re looking for, we are a little bit away but it is doable for a day trip. It may take about an hour each way to somewhere like Santa Monica or Venice Beach. Living in LA, driving is a way of life and one hour to get somewhere is pretty typical and not unusual.
Nearest airport
Burbank Airport is the closest to us, about 20 min away. LAX is about 1 hour or more, depending on traffic. Sometimes just getting in or out of the airport itself (from the entrance to the terminal) could take 20-30 minutes. Unfortunately, it’s not the most well designed airport. Ontario airport is another option though also 1 hr away (but it doesn’t have the unpredictability like LAX does).
