General overview
A heritage listed home with a stunning open plan extension, small pool and easy access to city, beaches, wineries and the beautiful Adelaide Hills.
**We are hoping to gain a Globe for our trip to the UK in December 2024, so please feel free to message for availability even if not shown on calendar, as we may be able to work something out.**
The space
Our home was built in 1925 as part of a major government housing scheme for returned soldiers. We love its front verandah, with views across Mortlock Park to the Adelaide Hills, it's spacious bedrooms, light-filled living areas and timeless ambience.
In addition to the original three bedrooms (we knocked down a wall between bedrooms 3 and 4 to make a large Master bedroom), the tasteful extension includes a separate small living room with TV and Xbox, a spacious open plan sitting/dining/kitchen overlooking the back garden.
We eat most of meals on our west-facing back verandah during summer, and the extendable outdoor table and Weber Q makes this a great place for entertaining. Kids and teenagers will enjoy the trampoline and swimming pool, which is surrounded by a glass safety fence.
The indoor dining area overlooks a small pool, with built-in timber seating perfect for reading or sunbathing. Both our front and back gardens are filled with perennial flowers and shrubs and are especially lovely during the heat of the Adelaide summer.
Our decor is probably best described as 'eclectic', with shelves overflowing with family-friendly board games, books and mementos of our travels.
We live immediately opposite a large oval which is great for jogging, football or tossing a ball, and features an excellent children's playground.
Notes
Our priority at the moment is finding a non-sim or sim swap for mid-December 2024 to early January 2025 in London so that our children can experience an English Christmas.

Neighbourhood
Our home is in Colonel Light Gardens, a State Heritage listed suburb about 7km south of Adelaide, South Australia. Regarded as 'the most complete and representative example of a Garden Suburb in Australia', CLG is a truly delightful place to live and stay - wide, tree-lined streets, grass verges, literally *no* modern developments and the lovely Mortlock Park right across the road from our house.
In 2023 Adelaide was voted 'Australia's coolest city' by the Wall Street Journal - and we locals aren't surprised! It's a breeze to get around, with stunning suburban beeches, three world class wine-growing areas within an hour's drive (Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale and Adelaide Hills - the latter two are only half an hour from our place), outstanding eateries and a lovely, laid-back vibe.
Here are some of our favourite places to visit for international guests.

There are literally dozens - if not hundreds - of walking tracks and trails within less than an hour of our front door, all well-marked and many on which you're unlikely to spot another person. Whether you want to meander through bush, stroll through picturesque countryside, get your heart-rate up clambering over rocks or follow a coastal boardwalk for miles, you'll never be short on options for a *free*, uplifting activity in beautiful surroundings.

Younger children
Adelaide is truly a fabulous place for small children. Surrounded on all sides by open public parklands, wherever you go you'll find there's plenty of space for kids to run around. Here are some of our favourite activities for little people:
Steamranger heritage steam railway - on the Fleurieu Peninsula this is one of our family's all-time faves: https://www.steamrangerheritagerailway.org/our-trains/cockle-train/
Adelaide Zoo - we especially love the boardwalk through the monkey house and the panda bears: https://www.adelaidezoo.com.au
Adelaide Botanic Gardens - a duck pond, the Southern hemisphere's largest indoor rainforest, wetlands and a breathtaking rose garden makes this a perfect picnic destination: https://www.botanicgardens.sa.gov.au

Strawberry/Fig/Apple/Cherry picking - lots of fun (and feasting!) for all the family: https://southaustralia.com/travel-blog/where-to-go-fruit-picking-in-south-australia

Getting to my home
Our home is about a 20-minute taxi ride from Adelaide airport, or a 15-minute bus ride from the centre of Adelaide.
Nearest airport
Adelaide International Airport, 10km.
Getting around
There's an excellent coffee shop a 3-minute walk from our front door and a range of restaurants, take-aways and other coffee shops a 10-15 minute walk away (and strolling anywhere in CLG is a pleasure).
In addition, we're a 5-minute drive from Pasadena Shopping Centre, which features a world-class supermarket (complete with grand piano player) that impressed even our Parisian house guests, and also 5-minutes from the upmarket Mitcham Shopping Centre, which has another two supermarkets, a book shop, stationers, a couple of upscale boutiques, cafes etc.
Two bus routes service our area (both with stops a 3-5 minute walk from our front door), one of which travels along some of the most picturesque avenues of houses in Adelaide and on to King William Road, one of the city's high end shopping precincts. Here you can find award winning restaurants and cafes, beautiful homewares stores and cute wine bars.

Anna
We're a family of four living in Adelaide, South Australia. Jamie (dad) is a primary school teacher, Anna (mum) runs a leadership and organisational development consultancy, Lucas (age 16) loves soccer (football!), politics and food and Eva (13) is an avid reader, amateur botanist and fledgling author.
We've been fortunate to visit many wonderful places together, from beautiful European cities to remote outback locations. At present we're hoping to find house swaps in south eastern Australia, London and South East England for Christmas 2024 so our children can experience a winter Christmas.
"We're hoping to spend Christmas 2024 in London with elderly friends so are interested in swaps a couple of weeks either side of Christmas."
People Like Us is the world's most trusted home exchange community. We believe in sharing, trust, generosity, respect, communication, equality, cooperation, honesty, hospitality, friendship, flexibility and adventure. The McLaren Vale wine region - 'where the vines meet the sea' - is just a 30-minute drive from our house. The cellar doors here vary from architect designed three-storey glass structures, to repurposed 19th century churches, to mediterranean-style gardens. And the beaches of Port Willunga and Carrickalinga are perfect to stroll along as the sun sets over the sea.
The stunning Adelaide Hills region is just 20 minutes up the freeway from our home. More wineries, restaurants, hiking trails and cute historical towns await!

Pedestrianised Peel Street in the centre of Adelaide is known for its great cafes, bars and restaurants.
Cleland Conservation Park - just 20 mins from our house - is a must-see for international visitors. You can hand-feed kangaroos and wallabies, see koalas, Tasmanian devils, echidnas and emus in their natural habitat and take a look at our stunning birdlife up close.
The world-renowned Barossa Valley wine region is a one-hour drive from our home. In addition to a fabulous array of wineries and eateries, you'll find historic towns and villages, beautiful walking trails and great boutiques.
A 45-minute drive from our house, the Fleurieu Peninsula is a breathtaking combination of pristine beaches, rugged coastline, small historical towns and a top-notch food and wine trail. Horseshoe Bay (pictured) is one of our family's favourite destinations.
Kangaroo Island (112km south of Adelaide) placed second on Lonely Planet's top regions to visit in 2024. A very short flight, or a 90 minute drive and short car ferry ride and you can choose between untouched wilderness, adventure activities such as dune surfing, quad biking, kayaking or swimming with dolphins.
