Neighbourhood
Our small village of Flaxmere is seperated from Hastings City by only a few kilometres and a motorway.
Perfect for a family set up, our house is walking distance to a large park with a playground, skate park, duck pond, as well as takeaways (pizza, fish and chips and chinese, sushi, indian), pharmacy and supermarket within walking distance. There is a dairy (corner store) 2 minutes away that sells necessities, with major supermarkets only 10 minutes away.
Hastings City is home to Splash Planet, New Zealand's only water park, as well as a regional watersports park with an Olympic grade swimming pool. Cafes and restaurants are readily available to visit, as well as plenty of fruit fresh from the Orchards and side of the road stalls. Enjoy a drive through our beautiful rural scenery on your way to our equally beautiful sandy beaches.
For those with a young family, there are parks and playgrounds aplenty, a skate park, trampoline park, laser tag, recreational swimming pools, and miniature trains.
Napier City is only 20 minutes away, home to Art Deco buildings and our National Aquarium. Rocky beaches line the seashore, great for crab hunting. There is a great museum with free entry, detailing the great Napier Earthquake of 1931 as well as changing exhibits.
Boutique shops and art galleries are dotted along the main streets, along with more affordable shops and souvenir shops, bakeries and cafes.
Walking tours explore the art deco buildings in more depth, but are easily viewed as you stroll through town. Big cruise ships frequently dock in Napier, flooding the town with eager visitors and different cultures.
Our region has just been voted the 12th Great Wine capital of the world! With over 200 vineyards, wherever you go in Hawkes Bay, you'll be sure to see the rows of grapes, and the stunning wineries.
Mission Estate holds a concert every year, bringing in headlining acts such as Elton John. Rod Stewart, Cindi Lauper, Olivia Newton John, Eric Clapton and many more.
Two to three hours drive in either direction will take you to the coastal town of Gisborne, the lakeside towns Taupo and Rotorua or inland to Palmerston North. Keep going South and you'll find yourself in our capital city, Wellington, visiting several little towns along the way.
In summer our temperatures can get to 34°c during the day, and in winter down to -2 at night, but usually around 5 -10°c during the day. You will see snow on the hills in winter, but it never gets very low.
Whether you are into food and wine, cycling trails, hiking, arts and cultural experiences, architecture or just relaxing in the sun, there's something for everyone.
Nearest airport
Napier airport is a 20 minute drive. Auckland International is 5 hours drive away, Wellington is around 4 hours. A flight from either city to Napier is around 1 hour.
Getting Around
Local bus routes come close to our house, and we have shops within walking distance, however you would need a car to explore our region.

People Like Us Local Guide
Happy to meet up for a coffee or meal and to recommend local hot spots and offer advice
We enjoyed exploring the Hawke’s Bay region while staying at Natalie’s home. It was a good base for accessing the local attractions.
Natalie provided a wealth of information (and a really excellent system of sharing local spots using Google maps). Natalie welcomed us to her home with generous goodies. The home was comfortable - there were a number of cats to care for (5 adults and 4 kittens), plus a couple of Guinea pigs and chickens.
My kids adored the little kittens and enjoyed the experience of caring for them. They also enjoyed the Lego and games to play with.
Thank you for welcoming us in your home!
Natalie and her family were lovely guests staying at our home. Communication with Natalie was easy and she kindly agreed to set the home up for another exchange and the house was left spotless. I would happily recommend Natalie and her family as guests for exchanging. We had the pleasure of meeting in person at the end of our exchange.
Dominique and Glens house was the perfect spot for our first family holiday, and first house swap. The house was clean and tidy, with plenty of room for the family to spread out - essential with neurodiverse teens! The outdoor space was gorgeous, backing onto bushland, with a fenced pool and outdoor lounge area perfect for reading, while watching the kids swim. Waking up to birdsong was magical, and we enjoyed the visiting creatures, like the scrub turkey and water dragon. The house was easy to access, and in close proximity to shopping centres, and to both Brisbane and Sunshine coast.
The only thing we could find to complain about was the lack of koalas spotted - so really, nothing at all!
Highly recommend staying here!
Dominique was the perfect first visitor to our home, leaving it exactly how she found it, and doing a great job looking after our pets. Communication was great and we felt that our car and house had been left in safe hands.
As it was our first exchange, it probably wasn't perfect for her, but thank you for taking a chance on a new exchange partner, and I have lots of ideas for improving our place for next time!
10/10 would have Dominique and family stay again.

A kiwi family with a dream of seeing the world. 🌻
My husband works in large equipment sales and I work at the local hospital. We have a 16 year old son, and two daughters who are 10 and 13.
We are both non smokers and non drinkers. Our kids are of an age where they are respectful of other people's houses and belongings.
In our spare time, my husband enjoys tinkering outside, while the girls and I are very crafty. Our house is our pride and joy and we've overhauled it on a shoestring budget the last few years, but there's always another job to do, which takes up our free time.

People Like Us is the world's most trusted home exchange community. We believe in sharing, trust, generosity, respect, communication, equality, cooperation, honesty, hospitality, friendship, flexibility and adventure. We take pride in our homes and we care about the environment in which we live: our village, city, country and our planet. We care about the ethos of home exchange and we do it because we love the experience and the friendships that it generates.
Our backyard offers a playhouse with slide, children's bikes and ride ons, vege and flower gardens to pick from, freeranging chickens, guinea pigs, pole tennis and other play equipment.
Main bedroom with queen bed. Room to add an extra bed/mattress/portacot if needed.
The pink room has a king single with single trundle bed underneath. Plans to de-pink the room are in place.
Third bedroom has a double bed.
Our garden has seasonal fruit and veges, with free range chooks providing Pest control and fresh eggs daily.
The rivers nearby make great swimming spots. As it doesn't get dark until 9 - 10 in Summer, an evening dip is a great way to finish off the day, without being out in the sun at the worst part of the day
Napier and Hastings are the main cities in Hawkes Bay, and are surrounded by several smaller towns. You can get from HB to Taupo, Rotorua, Palmerston North or Wellington with only a few hours driving.
Splash Planet Waterpark, open November to April. Only a 15 minute drive away.
