General Overview
Our home in the mountains is a beautiful oasis. We are close to town but up above the valley with views of the Santa Cruz Mountains facing west. We have recently remodeled much of our adobe brick home with new bathrooms, floors and more. The wall to wall windows look west over the mountains and you walk out the patio doors to a wrap around veranda. Step down onto a patio area and eat all your meals outside. From the patio, you can walk down into the orchard (over 40 fruit trees!) and visit the chickens. The land is fairly steep in areas but fun to explore. We are on one acre and surrounded by friendly neighbors - private but not isolated. Do be aware that we live near the top of a windy mountain road. The road is perfectly fine for large and small vehicles but can take some getting used to for those who haven’t lived in the mountains.
Our two friendly mostly indoor cats would love for you to give them a little attention now and then and feed them maybe once a day (they also have a robot feeder). Our two outdoor cats are semi-feral and avoid people, but you will see them around. If you can put a little food out for them once a day, that's appreciated. Our 10 chickens live in a coop in the orchard and will provide you with plenty of fresh eggs!
The Space
The master bedroom and bathroom are at one end of the house with a king sized bed (two single trundles underneath for young children) and a large walk in glass shower. Patio doors lead out to the veranda, or you can walk through the open kitchen/living/dining area with huge windows facing the beautiful view of the mountains. We have new living room furniture that provide seating for at least 6 and will update photos soon. At the other end of the open living area are two kids bedrooms - one with a loft single bed and the other with two single beds (we will update photos soon!) The kitchen has not yet been remodeled and the appliances are somewhat old but very functional. Outside the back bedroom is a washer dryer and another door that leads to the front yard.
Outdoors, the property is 1 acre and fully fenced. It’s quite hilly and very fun to explore. We have many swings, climbing gym and a sandbox for kids. There is also an orchard with 40 fruit trees. A large chicken coop with 10 hens sits down in the orchard.
We rent our small guest cottage (attached to the garage) sometimes, but it might be available during your stay and can sleep 2 people in a queen size bed. It is a few steps from the main house.

Neighbourhood
Our neighborhood is a mountain neighborhood - that means the people are friendly and help each other out, but still appreciate their privacy and are not nosy. Our home is near the top of a windy mountain road. It’s very safe but can take a little getting used to if you haven’t lived in the mountains.
Getting to my home
The closest airport is San Jose (30 minutes) and San Francisco (50 minutes). You will need a car as public transportation doesn’t come to our neighborhood. We are 15 minutes outside downtown Los Gatos with loads of restaurants and shops and 30 minutes from Santa Cruz and the beaches. Many state and national parks are close by for day trips or overnights.
Nearest airport
San Francisco International Airport (1 hour), San Jose International Airport (30 min)
Getting Around
You will want a car to get around so you can visit the 63,000 acres of open space preserves as well as the many thousands more acres of area state and national parks. It’s about a half hour drive to the beach. Monterey is about 1.5 hours and 2 hours to Big Sur. The coastline is breathtakingly beautiful and there are probably at least 50 beaches within an hour drive. Our home is also very close to many beautiful parks full of hiking in old growth Redwood forests, including Henry Cowell, Big Basin, Nisene Marks, and more. The Sierra Nevada Mountains, including Yosemite, are a 3-4 hour drive, so great for a weekend trip.

Let us know if you'll be in the Bay Area! We'd love to meet up and are happy to show you around or give you any suggestions. We're about 20min outside San Jose, 30 min from Santa Cruz, and 1 hr from San Francisco,
Gorgeous mountain house with all the amenities. Very family friendly. The animals, the views, the great communication with our gracious hosts - could not recommend it more!
Fantastic base to explore California, but you'll be finding yourself wanting to spend time at this gorgeous home.
We had a wonderful 2 week stay at Leah and Scott's home. Leah is super nice and responds to messages fast. Communication was really easy. I won't talk about the neighborhood as they are moving soon. The house is very comfortable and was professionally cleaned before we arrived. The kitchen is well equipped with top of the line cooking tools (we cook a lot). They had really fun toys for our young kids to play with. However, the highlight for our girls were their 2 sweet cats. Our girls were in heaven playing with kitties. Although, this was a non-reciprocal exchange, we would be happy to welcome the Sterns into our home should they ever visit our city.
Staying at Leah's home was absolutely wonderful. Before we came for our non-reciprocal exchange, she had great communication about her place and taking care of her cats. We communicated via a video chat as well as by emailing and texting. She was very responsive and answered all my questions. She provided us with a very detailed document of everything we needed to know to stay there. Our family found her home to be perfect as it was clean, well-appointed, and had everything we needed for cooking, working, playing (good selection of kids toys and games) and relaxing. Her cats were such a joy to us and were fun to care for. We also enjoyed the area of her home and found it easy to get around the city of Chicago from her home. She provided us with wonderful suggestions of what to see and do around her home, so that was really helpful.
Leah was very easy to work with and made us feel so comfortable and accepting into her home. She truly went above and beyond to welcome us to her home. We would definitely recommend exchanging with Leah and her family. We have nothing but wonderful things to say about Leah and her home.
Very nice meeting with Leah, Scott, Etta, Oliver. We are very happy with this first exchange which went very well. Thank you for these moments of exchange, especially when we took some time together for the tasting of a white wine "Entre deux Mers". It was a good time that makes you want to get to know you even better. The house was spotless, tidy when you left and we thank you very much. Looking forward to seeing you again!
We loved the Stern Family! Very respectful and polite. They left the house organized, as agreed and took good care of our things. It's so nice to be able to have good conversations with our guests and exchange experiences and knowledge of different cultures. We are looking forward to going to Santa Cruz, CA.
Although Scott and Leah have not yet stayed in our house or caravan, I am confident they would make excellent and respectful guests!
It's been a few years since we hosted this nice family. It was great to have them here, maybe one day we will be able to visit them in US. Thank you for everything!
Scott, Leah and the kids came and stayed with me only for a few day in October 2019 - but I wished they could have stayed longer!
The Sterns are such a lovely couple with two adorable kids <3
We had such a good time and I really enjoyed spending time with them when I got home from work. I stayed in my basement apartment, but they were so kind to invite me for dinner and wine.
Scott were looking a jobs in Denmark and I was really hoping he'd be succesfull so they would stick around :-)
That didn't work out though, so I'll have to wait and see them when I can finally go to California to visit them at some point in the future.
In the mean time we keep in touch, the kids are growing up sooo fast!
But I can only give them me highest recommendations as exchangers and well as being a wonderful family.
Eveline & Johnathan were wonderful guests. They took great care of our home and kitties and were so helpful when our chickens got loose! Their communication was excellent and we'd happily recommend them anywhere they want to go.
Tina and her family stayed in our home for two weeks while we were away. They took wonderful care of everything, including our two cats and 6 chickens! Tina was very communicative with questions and she and her family left everything as they found it. This was a non-reciprocal exchange and we would happily host them anytime!
Hosting Bethany, Tony and their kids at our home was absolutely perfect. This was our first time hosting and I cannot imagine a better experience. Bethany and Tony were very communicative so that we knew everything was going smoothly. They took wonderful care of our two cats, so that I don’t think they even noticed we were gone!
When we returned, they had gone above and beyond! Our place was cleaner than we’d left it and all the linens and towels had been washed and folded. They had left info about the many many things they had seen and done while staying at our place - I was astounded by their adventurism and energy! Their kids each left a note for my daughter, telling her their favorite of her toys to play with. She loved this so much. They also left her a lego set as a gift - so so kind and thoughtful! They left us some home grown squashes, which was perfect for us as I love to cook!
We really just had such an amazing experience hosting and look forward to keeping in touch with them. I can only hope all our exchanges will go this perfectly!
We spent a week at Karolina’s lovely home in Gdańsk. What a beautiful place! Gdańsk surprised us with its many forested hills right in the city, its gorgeous old town and its friendly people. We’ve never had so many people offer their bus seats to our young children. Karolina’s home is spacious and warm. Our kids loved playing with the toys and we loved the views of the sunsets and the many skylights. The area is quiet and residential, away from the busy hubbub but still a short bus ride to old town. In the housing area, there are many small playgrounds and some beautiful wooded trails. We took the overnight ferry from Karlskrona to Gdinya and highly recommend this travel route. Karolina was so helpful with ideas for what to see and visit and how to get around. We are excited to host them at our home in the future!
Our stay with Lone was really just so special! We did a non-simultaneous exchange in October. We were looking to visit Europe that month and Lone generously offered her home. She was there, in her basement apartment, during our visit and we are so glad she was! We all talk a lot about making new friends and connections with home exchange but actually getting to sit and drink wine together and chat for hours was amazing. Lone is a caring and generous soul and we are so glad to know her! She was super respectful of space and we felt she wouldn’t push any sort of relationship/shared time on any of her guests but we were so glad she was open to it and hope to maintain our connection always.
Lone’s home is comfortable and beautiful. Our kids loved playing in her backyard. I took the dogs for a walk only once but wish I’d been able to more because there are so many beautiful trails with gorgeous views nearby. Our son was barely 2 years old and the dogs and cats were super patient and sweet with him. He loves animals and tries very hard to be gentle and they were all so tolerant and patient. And I loved having a cat snuggle on my lap each night.
During our 4 day visit, we spent time in the cute town of Frederiksvaerk, climbed the gorgeous hills around Hundested on the coast, explored the town of Helsingor and castle there, and drove down to Stevns Klint to see the amazing chalk cliffs. There were a couple more places nearby we didn’t make it to and we wished we would’ve had more time.
We stayed in Copenhagen for a couple days after leaving Lone’s house, but really we could’ve easily take the train for day trips to Copenhagen instead, especially if we hadn’t had very young children (and their tedious schedules).
We rented a car during our stay and while this isn’t really necessary, it was inexpensive and gave us more freedom.
We are new to home exchanging but I believe Lone’s will always be one of our favorite experiences. I would highly recommend that anyone and everyone exchange with her!

Leah & Scott
We are Scott, Leah, Etta (11), and Oliver (7), and we love traveling to new places, getting to know people and cultures, exploring nature and trying new food. We're very easy-going and laid-back, excited to exchange with similar folks. Home exchange is such a great way to experience a different culture and make lasting relationships! If you stay in our home, our 2 very friendly cats will be in residence and would appreciate some pets now and then and our chickens are happy to provide fresh eggs!
