General overview

Our home is a traditional but revamped cottage in the mountainous suburbs of Budapest, by the Danube. The most important feature for tourists is that you can reach Budapest city centre with a 5-min walk to the train station and then a 30-min train ride to the capital. Another advantage are the views from the terrace, just scroll the photos and you'll see. You can spot beautiful sunrises if you're an early bird. Our village is quiet and peaceful yet easy to reach and full of activities to do. We live here with two children so everything is family friendly, we have a lots of toys and children books. You'll experience rural life in Hungary within a close reach of the city and all facilities within walking distance.

The space

The outstanding feature is the terrace where you can leisurely sip a morning coffee or an evening wine overlooking the Danube and the hills. There is a small table accomodating 2 people and also a handcrafted bench for further 2. The terrace is covered so you can enjoy even in rainy weather. Apart from the upper one, we also have a summer terrace where we can add a table for 6 guests in case of nice weather. The garden is otherwise small and compact. Inside we have a spacious and bright living room allowing superb morning views towards east and south. There is an analog sound system (but no TV!) in one corner and a running machine (treadmill) in the opposite corner. There is a sofa bed accomodating 2 guests. The living room is connected with the kitchen through a wide arch so the common space feels much bigger. In the kitchen you can find everything needed for daily cooking. There are built-in lights above the kitchen counter. There's a small bedroom with a double bed and a desk, boasting beautiful views like the living room. There's a built-in wardrobe where we will make space for the guest clothes. Then we have the childrens bedroom with a bunk bed for two. The upper one is only recommended for children under 10, the lower bed under 12. Here we have bookshelves with a lot of childrens literature, many of them are illustrated so no Hungarian knowledge is needed. There is only one bathroom as the space is limited, you can find inside a bath, a toilet a basin and the washing machine.

Guest access

There are a couple of stairs from the street level to the terrace. Then the rest of the house is barrier free. For our guests we are offering the ground floor. There is an attic but it's used as a storage so i doesn't make sense to open.

Notes

We live there as a family with two children, attending the local school. So we are available for the house swap during the spring breaks. We have two cats and two turtles: none of them is very needy, the cats are sweet and roam on the streets almost all day, coming home in the evening for food. They love to cuddle when they’re in the mood. The turtles are even less needy and won’t bother you much. This is an old house with mixed clay bricks so the air is relatively humid. There is a dehumidifier we are regularly using and recommend to use it for the time of the stay. The advantage of the old and wide walls is that thermal insulation is excellent and you don't need an aircon in the summer. When it's 30C outside, it's 20-22C inside.

Neighbourhood

Our street is quiet yet central. On the corner (2 min walking distance) you can find a local café open from the 8AM-10PM every day. In the morning you can have a great capuccino and croissant, in the evening you can enjoy draft beer and hot staples. If you've come through our page, you're probably planning to visit the stunning Hungarian capital Budapest. But there's much more to do. Verőce village and the area itself also deserves a couple of days to explore. It is situated in the Danube Bend, a picturesque mountainous area where the Danube makes its way through the hills, in beautiful surroundings any season. This is a popular weekend getaway destination for Budapest people so there are lots of restaurants, cafés, confectioneries and many other shops including handcraft and art stores. Some attractions nearby: - Vác (picturesque small town with baroque architecture, farmers market and nice strolls by the Danube): 8min by train - Nagymaros (idyllic village with Saturday craft market and good dining scene: 10min by train - Visegrád (home of the most picturesque medieval castle overlooking the Danube): further 10min from Nagymaros by ferry If you are by car, we can recommend the following destinations within an hours drive: - The world heritage town of Banska Stiavnica in Slovakia for medieval atmosphere (in our humble opinion it's as beutiful as Prague) - Mátra mountains including the highest peak on Hungary for good hikes - Hollókő, world heritage preserved ethnographic village with unique architecture for rural beauty - Gödöllő with an enormous Royal Palace and majestic gardens In summer months don't miss the sandy beach on the Danube, it's a truly local experience with lángos (traditional Hungarian dough) and fröccs (wine with soda). Last but not least: we have great neighbours (alike us with a small child) so they will be a nice addition to your experience.

Getting to my home

If you're arriving by plane to Budapest, the most convenient way to reach Verőce is by train. It takes only 30 minutes. Trains leave every 30/60 minutes (peak hours/outside the peak) from Nyugati station. It's conveniently located within walking distance from the Parliament or St.Stephen Basilica and also served by a metro line. From the airport, if you want to save money, take the bus 100E that drops you directly in the center. From there (Deák Ferenc tér) you have to hop on the metro for 2 stations to Nyugati station. This takes cca. one hour. Alternatively you can take a taxi to Nyugati station, it will cost you cca. 15000 HUF (40 EUR) and takes only 30-40 minutes. I definitely don't recommend taking a taxi from the airport straight to Verőce as is costs a lot (100 EUR as per latest experience).

Luca&Levente

We are a family with two kids living in the beautiful surroundings of Budapest. We love to travel and meet new people, get off the beaten path and explore hidden gems. Our place in Veroce has a stunning view towards the Danube and the mountains, Budapest is 35min away by train that drops you right in the city center. Both of our children are attending the local school. So we are available for the house swap during the school breaks. We have two cats and two turtles: none of them is very needy, the cats are sweet and roam on the streets almost all day, coming home in the evening for food. You can consider them as outside cats as they never enter the house. They love to cuddle when they’re in the mood. The turtles are even less needy and won’t bother you much.
