General overview

Our summer home is located on a hill overlooking the Bra'dor lake, one of the largest salt water/freshwater aka "brackish" lakes in North America. It is located a rural area of Cape Breton Island called Shenacadie. The view, across the lake , takes in the location of Alexander Graham Bells home, Ben Breigh, the inventor of the telephone; other villages like Kempt Head, Washabuck, and Baddeck , the largest of the three with its " sparkling lights shining in the distance" when the sun goes down. Baddeck is about a 45 minute drive from our cottage and involves a short drive on a ferry. Baddeck is quaint tourist town and has features like good food, the Alexander Graham Bell Museum ,a world class golf course, and several shops featuring our many artisan and artists on the Island. Cape Breton Island is well known for it artists of various genres, music, hospitality. The Island is encased in beautiful scenery, mountains ranges that would take ones breath away, and of course the many ocean beaches that literally surround our Island. The famous Cabot Trail is very accessible from our cottage. Visitors can do parts of this in day trips, visit different communities along the Trail or stay over in one of the fine communities who thrive on welcoming visitors no matter what time of year. There are plenty of things to see and do in all seasons from beaching, to whale watching to skiing and lots of hiking and biking! I would encourage you to seek more information by visiting sites like Celtic Colors International Festival, and Destination Cape Breton Island.

The space

The livng space is large with two bedrooms, a large living area with a floor to ceiling rock fireplace, made with rocks form the 50 acre property . The kithen is a 16 by 12 ft.kitchen area with all the imenities and all "tools and utentils" that one might need to set up just like home! The bathroom is a very good size with a shower (no bathtub.) There are two neighbors on either side but there is woods and trees that seprate us and gives the cottage complete privacy. There are tons of birds and many eagles flying around, and the fishing is great just below the cottage where one can walk to the beach.I will refer you to Virbo and Airbnb for further information and reviews on this location as we have been members for the past 7 years, with most of the renters retruning a year after year.

Guest access

IT is one level structure, no stairs. It has a large deck enveloping the front and side of the cottage. It also has a gazebo referred to as our "Stupa", separated by gardens. Another building we refer to as " the Shebunkie" is on the property and there are dartboards games and bunk beds. There is a Shed for storage as well on the property.

Notes

We prefer to have a couple or two couples. IT is not really child safe as we do not have chidlren. Older children it would accomodate. We do not have internet, as yet, so this might be an issue for some. The city of Sydney is the largest city boasting about 30,000, and it is 40 minute drive from the cottage. There is also a family run general store with a delicious food served about 6kil form the cottage. There is a Pub, The Folk and Frolic Inn, and a Cafe at the local and Marina , Grand Narrows ,about 15 minute drive. There is so much to see and learn about the Island and I would suggest seeking out or google Louisbourg, Cabot Trail, Sydney and things to do in Cape Breton Island to get more information and links. Destination Cape Breton is one. to google.

Neighbourhood

OUR NEIGHBOURHOOD IS VERY RURAL AND BESIDES SCENERY YOU WILL FIND SOME FULL TIME AND SUMMER HOMES IN THE AREA. From our cottage there is access to both the east and west side of the Island , both having unique qualities. the Island has a mixture of cultures from Italian, Polish, Native American, East Indian, just to mention a few. it is referred to as a melting pot of different cultures living together in harmony. the community of the cottage is Scottish/Irish heritage boasting a large Gaelic Community, rich in cultural events and the Celtic music is very much alive and well! . The Island also has the only Gaelic College in another close by community, known as St Anns, Gaelic College. I refer you to the song by one of our own, Allister Mac Gillvary, " We are an Island" to get sense of the people who live on the Island.

Getting to my home

If flying then one can fly into Halifax International Airport, then drive about 4.5 kil east. Highway 105 brings you to a turn off on the right referred to as Little Narrows. After a very short drive you will then get on a ferry, the shortest ferry drive, I am sure, in the world! Once across, You will turn right and after about a 20 minute drive you will see our address 6461 on the right. A long driveway will take to our cottage. One can also get a direct flight from Montreal or Toronto, Canada, taking you into Sydney, Nova Scotia. From this point on , take a left from the airport, drive to an intersection that will take you to the 105 highway, turn left. Keep driving on this highway until you see exit Grand Narrows, Boisdale, North Sydney, highway 223. Take the ramp on the right and then take a left. Drive about 30_40 minutes, until you come to the sign that says " Shenacadie". Our cottage is 6461, about 4.5 ki. Past the sign, and it will be on the left. One will need to rent a car to explore our Island.

Nearest airport

Ha.iax International Airport and Sydney, the John Mac Curdy is the closest airport.

Getting around

you will need a car to get around or if you are an avid bicycalist, this could work. There are taxi services in the main Centres like Sydney, and there is rural bus service in Inverness county. From the location of the cottage your would need a car. The main and larger shopping areas are found in Sydney and North Sydney, the alter being a little closer. there are some local general stores and of course many of the Islands artisons have shop located all over the island.
