Neighbourhood

Battle is best known for being the site of the Battle of Hastings in 1066. The Battle of Hastings saw the defeat of Saxon King Harold II to the Norman armies of William the Conqueror, who then became King William I. the town grew around the site of Battle Abbey, built in 1071, in whose grounds is the actual site where Harold fell, killed by an arrow to his eye as depicted in the famous Bayeux tapestry. There is a beautiful church outside the abbey walls built in 1115. Battle is 15 minutes from Hastings where there are the ruins of a Norman castle on cliffs overlooking the sea as well as smugglers caves and the UK’s steepest funicular railway up the West Cliffs. The Hastings OId Town has numerous pubs and restaurants and quirky shops, well worth a visit. Further east along the coast is Rye, In the centre, cobbled lanes like Mermaid Street are lined with medieval, half-timbered houses. Rye is one of the most charming, historic towns in East Sussex with a rich history filled with tales of smugglers. There is a raft of independent shops and galleries, pubs and restaurants. Eastbourne is a 35 minute drive from Battle and has one of the best examples of a Victorian Pier and promenade complete with a 1930’s bandstand. It has everything you would expect from a town of that size with a shopping complex, cinema and many places to eat and drink. Nearby is the South Downs National Park with the famous Beachy Head and it’s 1902 lighthouse Brighton is just over an hour away by car. A famous seaside resort, home of the Royal Pavillion. Beginning in 1787, it was built in three stages as a seaside retreat for George, Prince of Wales, who became the Prince Regent in 1811, and King George IV in 1820. It is built in the Indo-Saracenic style prevalent in India for most of the 19th century with onion domes and minarets. Make sure to wander the Laines, famous for its many independent shops, jewellery quarter and narrow alleyways. Another attraction is the Palace Pier with it’s fairground rides, bars, restaurants and deckchairs to take in the seaview. London is just over an hour away on a direct train from Battle station which is a 25 minute walk or 10 minutes in the car from our house.. For the golfer, there are 4 courses within a 15 minute drive and at least another 8 within a half hour drive, all accept visiting golfers on a green fee basis.
