General overview

My home is a quintessential Victorian terrace house in the heart of Southsea, Portsmouth. The vibrant area is full of cafes, shops, bars and restaurants and is just 10 minutes walk to the beach and lovely 5-mile promenade, perfect for early morning walks or evening strolls. My place is decorated eclectically, with deep colours, arty prints and a cosy vibe with a light airy kitchen.

The space

Ground floor There are two living rooms. The main lounge has two sofas, a TV with Netflix plus a log-burning stove for cosy evenings curled up with a glass of red wine. A second lounge/study also has two sofas and means you could read while someone else watches TV or bring a laptop and work at the desk. Kitchen & dining room The kitchen is light and airy, with a glass roof, two tub chairs and a little bistro table and chairs. Double doors lead to a small courtyard garden, which is green and leafy and gets all-day sun in summer. It's lovely to sit outside in the morning with a coffee or a glass of wine in the evening. In the dining room the unusual black lacquer table seats six and the kitchen is right there through an archway so you can chat while you cook. First floor There are two double bedrooms, both decorated with chic wallpaper and blackout curtains. The bathroom has a walk-in shower and clawfoot tub and there's a separate WC.

Guest access

The hallway is narrow and would be unsuitable for wheelchair access and the stairs to the first floor are quite steep.

Notes

Parking is on the street (no drive or off-road parking) and while a car is useful for getting out of town you shouldn't need one for seeing the local area. Neighbourhood

Southsea is known for its cool vibe, with cafes, bars and restaurants and lots of independent shops plus plentiful small supermarkets. You can walk everywhere or get quick taxi, meaning little need for a car on a daily basis. The pebble beach is just 10 away and there are miles of promenade and a large common where everyone comes to run, walk their dog or stroll with friends. In the summer beach BBQs and picnics are everywhere. You can swim, rent a standup paddleboard, dine on the seafront or grab a coffee or some English fish n chips and watch everyone coming and going. Old Portsmouth with its traditional pubs and cathedral is a 30-minute pleasant walk along the seafront, past King Henry VIII's castle and the old lighthouse. Speaking of Henry VIII, you can see his famous Mary Rose warship at the Historic Dockyard, and visit the Victory, Lord Nelson’s flagship during the Battle of Trafalgar plus HMS Warrior and much more. The historic dockyard is a cracking day out. Gunwharf Quays is home to the Spinnaker Tower and dozens of designer shops, plus restaurants and bars to relax in after you've shopped or been to the top of the tower and gazed out to sea. Can you see the Isle of Wight? Take the ferry across the water in 40 minutes and discover beautiful countryside, old-world villages and tiny seaside towns. Drive out of town and in 30 minutes you can be in the rolling green hills of the South Downs, with tiny villages, old pubs and cute tea rooms for the obligatory tea and cake :-) Further afield you could visit many places in 1-2 hours, such as Stonehenge (65 miles) Brighton (50 miles) or even Oxford (65 miles). There a dozens of places within a much closer drive or train ride. Historic Winchester is just 45 minutes and Arundel with its stunning Ancient castle, antique shops and cute tea-rooms is 45 minutes in the other direction. I can provide tonnes of advice about where to visit, depending on your interests.

Getting to my home

From London Gatwick airport it’s approx 90 mins by train and approx 90-120 minutes by car, Heathrow is similar.

Nearest airport

London Gatwick and Heathrow are approx 65 miles away. Southampton is 20 miles.

Getting around

You can walk to most places from my house, depending on your fitness level, or a short taxi ride will get you anywhere in 5-10 minutes. The train station is about 15 minutes walk or a short taxi ride.

Lisa

I love to travel and especially exploring the world through culture, food and wine. I adore cities, where I like to wander and soak up the atmosphere, architecture and history and just absorb the flavour of a place. I like sitting in a good cafe, restaurant or bar and people-watching and finding places where locals eat. I'm passionate about food and wine and a few years ago I studied some wine qualifications and even worked in a UK vineyard for a while as a tour guide. Yes, we make wine in England - mainly sparkling wine in the champagne style - and believe me it's excellent! I'm not all about the cities as I enjoy marvelling at dramatic scenery with nothing but a view in front of me (and maybe a book and a coffee). And as I live on the coast I have a natural love of being by the sea. My work is marketing/copywriting/PR communications, which encompasses many things, but I love writing and I'm hoping to do more work as a travel writer. I can do all of this remotely which means that I can travel flexibly and for extended periods of time - perfect for this wanderer! I usually travel solo but might want to bring a friend occasionally.
