We love the peace and serenity of our home in rural Santa Fe County and the incredible vistas. It is our oasis in the high desert, yet we are only 30 minutes from the charming city of Santa Fe, New Mexico.
The space
Our home is a contemporary style home, designed to be active/passive solar. The master bedroom and bath is located in the main residence, as well as living room & dining area, kitchen, office and laundry/mud room with half bath. An enclosed breezeway connects the main residence with a studio apartment which serves as the second bedroom suite. The studio has a separate entrance and patio doors opening onto the courtyard garden. Both bedrooms have a view of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. The studio also serves an Airbnb rental, so it would be possible to do an exchange for two people while either Tom and I or a pet sitter were staying in the main residence. We have been hosting since 2017 (Superstar designation) with many repeat visitors and long term guests doing contract work at Los Alamos Laboratories nearby.
Guest access
The entire home is situated on one level, there are no stairs other than a one step at entries.
Notes
We are in a rural setting, so our home is situated on a gravel road near the Pojoaque River. We highly recommend a 4 wheel or all wheel drive vehicle, particularly in the monsoon season.
Our home is not an appropriate situation for young children. The second bedroom is completely separate from the main residence with an enclosed breezeway between the two spaces.
We have two dogs, Willa and Kato. We would only consider boarding them for a stay of 10 days or less. Our preference would be to do an exchange with dog lovers who would be willing to care for our pets during their stay. Of course we would be happy to reciprocate care for theirs as well! If not feasible, we would have a pet sitter in the main residence while during a simultaneous exchange. This means the Airbnb would be available for two people if that is a consideration.

Neighbourhood
Our neighborhood is very typical northern New Mexico: eclectic. Our neighbors are friendly and always helpful, but we all respect each others privacy. There are less than a dozen homes in our immediate area. We are situated on the highest elevation of our five acres, with the southern boundary being the Pojoaque River. Usually there is a small amount of water running, and sometimes none at all, so it is an ideal place for walks and enjoying views of both the Jemez and Sangres Mountains. We walk our dogs here every day. There are many stately cottonwood trees throughout the neighborhood, as well as Russian olives, willows, indigenous grasses, cholla cacti and my favorite shrub, the chamisa. In the fall this ubiquitous plant has a golden yellow flower head. Our area is ideal for birdwatchers, a past time we find fascinating. One of our long term Airbnb guests recorded over 50 different species during a three month stay.
Getting to my home
If traveling by air, the Albuquerque Sunspree Airport (ABQ) offers the most options, and all the major car rental companies are available. Rail is not a great choice, and certainly not walking! There is bus service in the area, but unfortunately very limited and mostly intended for commuters to Los Alamos Laboratories which is fairly close by.
Nearest airport
Santa Fe is the closest airport, and preparing to do a major expansion in 2024. Currently they are limited to only 2-3 carriers and located about 45 minutes away. The Albuquerque Sunspree Airport is a distance of 1.5 hours away and has many of the major carriers. They are currently in the process of expanding also.
Getting around
A car or truck, preferably 4 wheel or all wheel drive is best means of transportation. Unfortunately our insurance does not permit non-family members the use of our vehicles.
