General overview

We are lucky enough to have found our dream home in the Scottish Highlands, a custom built house designed to maximise the surrounding stunning views. Up on a hill and just off the Great Glen Way hiking trail, it's peaceful and tranquil, and only a short drive to the nearest village for amenities. Surrounded by nature and all the outdoor activities you can think of! Historic sites (castles) and the world renowned Loch Ness a 10 minute drive away.

The space

We have recently moved in, I'll add more photos as we furnish the house (at the moment it is still quite empty). The house is custom build with huge double-storey windows in the living room facing the view. Each room in the house has been designed to maximise the view, so there are plenty of windows making it light inside. The house has wooden flooring throughout, bar the bathrooms and utility room, 5 bedrooms, 3.5 bathrooms, a large utility room and double garage. We live on 5 acres of land, which at the moment is wild bush and trees. Deer and pheasants come by every day. The main features of the house are a huge kitchen with 2 ovens (a normal oven and an Aga), the living room with a patio out the front and 2 sets of French doors, a large master bedroom upstairs with walk in wardrobe and large ensuite bathroom with a shower and a bath. We have underfloor heating both upstairs and downstairs. It's honestly a very spacious house, you will have everything you need here to feel very comfortable! We have 3 young kids who's bedrooms are downstairs, and they have toys/books visiting families can use.

Guest access

There are 2 floors (ground and first floor), with stairs in the house. 3 single bedrooms are downstairs, 2 double bedrooms are upstairs. The kids rooms are downstairs so here we have toys to play with too for any families staying.

Notes

Our home is very special to us, please please look after well. We'll also do the same with yours :)

Neighbourhood

We are <10 minute drive to Drumnadrochit, the nearest village where there are amenities like a grocery store, cafes/restaurants and some tourist shops. For more amenities and facilities, Inverness is the nearest city, around a 35-40 minute drive away. The house is on Bunloit hill, you have a feeling of remoteness and peace up here. On a clear night, you can see the stars and the milky way because there is no light pollution. The aurora borealis are also visible (we have not seen them ourselves yet but have been told by neighbours). On the doorstep of the house is the Great Glen Way, a fantastic hiking trail. You can also hike up the nearest mountain, Meall Fuar-mhonaidh, from the house, or can access multiple munroes (mountains) and lochs (lakes) just a short drive away. Loch Ness is a 10-minute drive away, here you can swim, paddle, or go on boat trips which run during the summer in search of 'Nessie', the Loch Ness monster.

Getting to my home

We highly recommend hiring a car when visiting here, there is not much public transport at all and our house is off the main roads. We are looking into whether we can do a car swap, but UK car insurance rules don't seem so open to this - we are still investigating.

Nearest airport

Inverness airport, a 50 minute drive away. Next nearest is Edinburgh or Glasgow (both around 3.5 hours drive away)

Getting around

Best to get around by car, or there are many walks from the house.

Carina

Family of 5, we love to travel and explore all outdoorsy parts of the world - mountains and / or beaches are our favourite. We have 3 young kids who are experienced travellers already :) We're now based in the Scottish Highlands, an outdoor paradise. New to home exchange but keen to organise a few swaps per year if possible. Open to Europe swaps in 2024, after that open to all international destinations.
