Neighbourhood
Rasteau is a very small village in the northern part of Provence. It is surrounded by lush green vistas that are emblematic of this very agricultural region, but not as rocky and dusty as what you will find in the southern part of Provence, closer to Luberon. Mont Ventoux is the most famous nearby mountain, and a oft-attempted challenge for cyclists. The entire region is a paradise for cyclists, whether you like hills or long flat rides. Within 20 minutes from our house you can find yourself in the Dentelles de Montmirail with several gorgeous walking paths through picturesque fields and surprising vistas. Rock climbers love this region in the cooler months.
Rasteau itself is an AOC, and has historically been known for its sweet wine (which is excellent!). There are many small family-owned vineyards around us who welcome visitors for tastings.
Vaison-la-Romaine is the closest "big" town. It's very charming and has a number of good restaurants, plenty of grocery stores and shops, as well as an excellent and massive market on Tuesdays.
Rasteau itself has a small epicerie (grocery store) with surprisingly good quality produce, a boulangerie which is open until 12:30pm 5 days a week, a bar, and a post office. In the summer months there's also a restaurant on the plaza. Year-round there is a small farmer's market on Wednesday mornings with produce, fish (high quality), and cheese.
During the summer months it hosts lots of events and festivities, including a Nuit de Vin which is famous in the region for its "traveling" route through the village.
Other charming villages nearby are Seguret, Cairanne, Beaumes-de-Venise, Vacqueras, and Saint-Cecile-les-Vignes (great market on Saturday mornings.).
Within an hours drive you have Avignon, Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, Saint-Remy-de-Provence, Cheateauneuf-de-Pape, Aix-en-Provence, and dozens of other classic Provence villages.
Grotte de Chauvet, Rousillion, Marseille, and Vallon Pont-du-Arc are within a 60-90 min drive.
It's a wonderful region with fantastic weather year-round. Though it gets cold in the winter months, it is one of the sunniest regions year-round. There is a famous cold wind that can blow quite strongly, called the Mistral, which is part of what makes this an ideal wine-growing region. In the summer, the weather is hot, but it's a dry heat and not at all humid. Plus it cools down in the evening. Our home has thick walls and a giant plantane tree to the south that provides shade, so it stays quite comfortable even without air conditioning, as long as you are sensible and shut the south facing shutters at the hottest hours of the day.
Nearest airport
Closest airport is Marseille, which is about 1h10 min away.
Getting around
Rasteau the village center is about 3km away. Easily accessible by bike or car. You can walk there in 30min or so. A car is necessary for most other trips.

The south side of the house; with the main entrance. The window to the right of the door is the kitchen and the two to the left are in the main living area.
Facing south, on the west side of the house, looking toward the basin and the vineyards. This is a lavender garden that will be in full bloom in summer.
Our kitchen has just been renovated by a reputable local artisan. The countertop is real wood. There is still an upper shelf to be installed.
Kitchen renovated in November 2024. Kitchen island seats 4 comfortably and can accommodate 5. An open shelf will be installed above the tile.
There is a large living / dining room space. The old wooden table seats 6-8 comfortably. The heating unit also provides cooling, though even in the highest heat of the day in August it's often not necessary, because the walls are so thick.
The same room from a different viewpoint. Two comfortable couches. (The wood burning stove on the far left cannot be used and will likely be removed shortly.)
Another view of the ground floor living room. This window faces west and there's a beautiful luminosity in the afternoon.
Second floor (first floor in France) landing. Going up these stairs takes you to two additional bedrooms that are not furnished at the moment.
South facing bedroom with vintage tiles. This bed is approximately 160x200 (an American queen size bed.)
The south facing window in this bedroom.
This room has a north-facing window and is directly opposite the bedroom with the tile. There is an electric keyboard in this room (to the left). The mattress from the children's bedroom can be brought into this room to make this room comfortable for sleeping.
The children's bedroom. Windows face south. Three single beds (90x90); one is on the floor, though this will change eventually. There is also a child's desk, legos, and other toys.
This bedroom faces west and has terracotta-colored tile. This bed is a 140x200 (double) size. It is a long and narrow room and also has a beautiful desk in it and a large window that brings in wonderful light.
Here is the view from the long, narrow bedroom on the west side of the house. A large desk, perfect for remote working, to the left. This room has a 140x200 bed in it, which can be seen in previous pictures.
Upstairs bathroom looking in from the hallway across from the childrens' room.
The upstairs bathroom with bathtub and double sink. This is across from the children's room.
This bedroom suite is on the ground floor, though there are still 2 steps to navigate. The window faces north. To the left is a giant sliding glass door that looks to the west. The bed is 160x200 (queen sized bed in the US). This room is quite private and the downstairs bathroom is very close to it, so it's perfect for grandparents or anyone who needs some extra space. It is fairly accessible from the outside (no stairs) but from the inside there are 3 stairs to enter the room.
The downstairs bathroom with a shower. This window faces north.
This is our front garden, looking south. The wall to the left is shared with our neighbors, who are very warm and kind.
This is our house you can see in the distance. It is an old farmhouse that has been split into two properties (in French this is called "mitoyenne"), this means we share a party wall with another family. We don't hear them whatsoever inside and there is a tall wall that separates the two homes visually from the exterior. We have a good relationship with our neighbors and socialize with them frequently. It is a very quiet place to be, surrounded by vineyards, but only 2km from the town.
The view from the second floor (1st floor in France). This is a small basin with springfed water, but it has not been tested so should not be used for drinking or bathing. Our house water is provided by the commune, so "city" water.
Another view looking southwest of the basin and the lavender garden and the vineyards.
Some of our treasures from nature walks in the area.
The view from the basin, which at one time provided water for the house. This is looking northwest.
