Neighbourhood

Sogndal sits right at the heart of Vestlandet. Our home sits right at the Barsnes fjord, with an incredible view over the mountains dropping straight into a deep blue fjord. If you love nature, this place will feel like paradise. The fjords and the mountains here are massive, and the numerous waterfalls seem to tumble from the sky. Vestlandet is famous for its beautiful hikes, and if you are a climber, Sogndal has one of the best places to climb. Some highlights: Jostedalsbreen National Park is a must-visit, just about an hour from Sogndal. This is where you’ll find Jostedalsbreen, the largest glacier on mainland Europe. You can hike to viewpoints for jaw-dropping glacier views, or join a guided tour to walk right on the ice. If you’re after more of an adrenaline rush, ice climbing on the glacier or white water rafting on the Jostedøla river are real thrills. In winter, the park becomes a snowy wonderland, ideal for skiing and snowmobiling. And if you want to learn more about the area, the Norwegian Glacier Museum and other local museums in Fjærland are well worth a visit. Sogndal Skisenter (20min) offers both alpine and cross-country skiing with stunning fjord views, right on our doorstep. It’s a great spot for families, with slopes for all abilities. Sogndal is a hotspot for Alpine/ski touring. This is where backcountry skiing meets fjord views in the most spectacular way. You can start skinning up right from Sognefjellet and surrounding areas for incredible adventures. Kaupanger (10min) is a charming village, just a short drive from Sogndal. The historic Kaupanger Stave Church is a must-see. Kaupanger has a fantastic bicycle park. Solvorn (20min) is a charming village on the Lustrafjord, just a short ferry ride from Sogndal, with its old wooden houses and peaceful waterfront. It’s the gateway to Urnes Stave Church, the oldest stave church in Norway and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Dating back to around 1130. Balestrand (45min) is a picturesque village on the Sognefjord, often called the "Queen of the Fjords." It’s known for its beautiful Art Nouveau and Swiss-style wooden villas, which give it a unique character. Flåm is one of those places that just takes your breath away. Tucked away at the end of the Aurlandsfjord, it’s most famous for the Flåm Railway—a train ride so scenic it’s considered one of the most beautiful in the world. The Stegastein viewpoint is another highlight, jutting out over the fjord with views that are hard to believe. Flåm is also a great spot for fjord cruises, biking, or simply wandering around and soaking it all in. Gudvangen, at the other end of the Nærøyfjord, is just as impressive. This UNESCO-listed fjord is one of the narrowest and most dramatic in the world, with cliffs rising straight up from the water. Gudvangen has a fascinating Viking past, and it’s the perfect place to start a fjord cruise through Nærøyfjord to Flåm. Lærdal (30min) is where the fjord meets the valley, a bit further inland. It’s one of Norway’s oldest settlements, with a history going back to Viking times. Nearby is the stunning Borgund Stave Church, one of the best-preserved in the country. Lærdal is also famous for the Lærdal Tunnel—the world’s longest road tunnel, an impressive piece of engineering. Oldevatn and Lovatn (2h 30min)—two beautiful lakes perfect for a day out in nature. Oldevatn is the larger of the two, a long, scenic lake with mountains all around. Lovatn is smaller but just as charming, with water so clear you can see right to the bottom. Both are great for kayaking, fishing, or just sitting by the shore with a picnic. Jotunheimen National Park is a bit of a drive from Sogndal—about 2-3 hours—but it’s absolutely worth it. This is the land of giants, home to Norway’s highest mountains, including Galdhøpiggen, the tallest peak in Northern Europe. The Besseggen Ridge hike is a must—it’s one of Norway’s most famous, with views that’ll take your breath away. If you’re up for a real challenge, you can summit Galdhøpiggen itself. Climbers love the park for its challenging routes, and in winter, it’s a dream for skiers, with incredible backcountry opportunities.
