General overview

We love our home! We have spent the last few years renovating to make it our own and give all the spaces in it comfort and functionality. We particularly love that there are three different living spaces - our family living room is where we spend most of our time together as a family but we also have a kids games/lego/play room where we can all play board-games and also where the kids can play with their toys, build lego, create craft projects as well as do their homework (they enjoy that part less! 😂). Upstairs, there's a small living space between our bedrooms that gives us, as a family, our own extra space when we have guests staying. We also love having a dedicated guest room and bathroom because our families are quite spread out across NSW we often have family visiting and staying from various parts of the state.

The space

Ours is the perfect family home and we have a lot of space. Upstairs there are three bedrooms, one bathroom and a small communal living space. The main bedroom is very large and light with a king size bed and lovely views of the amazing Sydney sunrises and sunsets from its three large windows. It also has heaps of storage around a window-seat overlooking the backyard, plus a walk-in wardrobe. The other two bedrooms belong to our daughters and also have plenty of storage and light and can also sleep two people in each one as we will soon be replacing their single beds with one double in one room and a set of bunks in the other. The upstairs communal area has a couch and desk and opens onto a balcony which gives us some of our own space when we have family staying (which we do quite often!). Downstairs is a large, open-plan kitchen, dining and living room. The kitchen opens out to our covered back deck and generous backyard that currently hosts a cubby house, swing set, trampoline and temporary swimming pool (that we use in summer). Also downstairs is the kids study/play room that is full of toys, games and craft as well as being space for our kids to do their homework and study. There is also a bathroom (with a bathtub) and a dedicated double guest room with a queen bed. Our house is set well back from the road and we have a three-space carport and another lawn at the front with new citrus trees, a camellia (that the Rainbow Lorikeets love!) and an amazing magnolia tree, which is stunning when it flowers in winter. We also love the huge gum tree at the front and the way it attracts the kookaburras and catches the late afternoon light.

Guest access

Our home is two storeys and the staircase has 18 steps. There are also two easy steps to get to the front door and two easy steps down from the back deck into the back yard.

Notes

We have bikes in the bike shed out the front plus a camper trailer with camping gear packed and ready to go if you feel like a weekend (or longer) camping trip to one of the many nearby (or further) camping spots and national parks. If we're not taking our car on holiday, we are happy to leave it here for your use and it has a tow bar for towing the camper trailer.

Neighbourhood

We might be biased but we think we live in the best neighbourhood in the world! We love the community here and would never want to live anywhere else. It's safe, friendly, everything we need is on our doorstep and we're also in the perfect position for exploring both Sydney and other parts of NSW. Hornsby Heights is on the upper north shore of Sydney. It is surrounded by bush and you can access fire trails and bush walks that start only a short walk from our home. Just around the corner is Montview oval and playground that has soccer fields, cricket pitches, netball/basketball courts, a playground and two BMX bike tracks - a smaller course for littler kids and a bigger course for the more adventurous (we spent a LOT of time here during the lockdown of 2021)! There is a lovely corner shop and cafe a 5-minute walk down our street, that do the most delicious and generous food and coffee, and is run by Harry and Brenda, some of nicest people you'll meet. For more substantial shops within walking distance, 15 minutes walk down our street are the Hornsby Heights Shops that have a take-away shop, a pharmacy, a supermarket, a liquor shop, a pizzeria and a service station. Another couple of minutes walk from here will find you at Rofe Park, a large oval for sports as well as outdoor gym equipment for workouts and a great castle-themed playground for the kids. A 5-minute drive away is Crosslands Reserve, which is a beautiful nature reserve where you can bush walk, kayak, camp overnight or just spend a day having a BBQ while the kids play in the playground. We are less than 10 minutes drive from Hornsby (or there is a bus stop literally out the front of our house for easy public transport) where there is a huge Westfield, restaurants, the hospital, medical centres and the train station. The train will take you directly to the centre of Sydney in 40 minutes, or you can head in the opposite direction and be up north on the Central Coast to explore the beautiful beaches up there in 50 minutes. We are also only a short drive from the M1, the expressway that takes you north out of Sydney to explore the coast of NSW. My parents live in Copacabana, a stunning beach town on the Central Coast and we are there nearly every weekend in summer as it's only an hour's drive north. Also a short drive away is the NorthConnex tunnel that will take you towards the city and the airport and the northern beaches of Sydney are also not too far and you can be at Mona Vale beach in 40 minutes.

Getting to my home

Getting to our home is easy, either by car or by public transport. By car, we are about an hour's easy drive from Sydney airport or about 40 minutes drive from the central Sydney. By public transport, you can get a train to Hornsby - a major train station that all trains stop at - and then a short bus ride to Hornsby Heights (there is bus stop right beside our driveway and another across the road). Both buses and trains run very regularly throughout the day and evening.

Nearest airport

Sydney airport - one hour by car or train.

Getting around

Several shops are within walking distance from our home. The Corner Cafe in Hornsby Heights is a small supermarket and cafe and is 5 minutes walk from our home. The food and coffee there are delicious and we highly recommend it for breakfast or lunch (or both)! The Hornsby Heights shops are also only a 15-minute walk away and have a take-away shop, a pharmacy, a more substantial supermarket, a liquor shop, a pizzeria and a service station. 10 minutes in the car or by bus will get you to Hornsby where there is literally everything you need. There is a huge Westfield that has delicatessens, seafood, bakeries, butchers as well as all three of the large supermarkets - Coles, Woolworths and Aldi. There's also the major department stores - David Jones, Target and Kmart, as well as boutique, designer and beauty stores such as Pandora, Mecca and Country Road just to name a few. There's also lots of restaurants to choose from plus the cinemas -Event Cinemas in Westfield or, for a more authentic cinema experience, we recommend the Odeon on the west side of the train station. Also on this side of the station is Hornsby Aquatic Centre with an Olympic-size, heated outdoor pool for lap swimming and a large indoor play pool with a waterslide for kids. Hornsby Hospital is a major public hospital and there are also several bulk-billing medical centres in Hornsby you can visit as a walk-in patient if necessary. Hornsby train station is a major station and all trains stop there. You can head into the city from there, head up north to the Central Coast or head down south to the South Coast to explore different parts of NSW. Hornsby Heights and Hornsby really do have everything, either within walking distance or a short car or bus ride away.

Elizabeth

We are a busy and happy Australian family of four. Mum, Elizabeth, is a high school English teacher, Dad, Nick, is an IT Senior Project Manager and our two daughters are 11 and 9 in primary school. We also have one cat, Professor Minnie McGonegall, but we usually board her when we travel so she won't be here if you stay in our home (unless you really want her to be!). We mostly travel in Australian/NSW school holidays and love road trips but we are really looking for a long term exchange/s of 3+ months (up to 9 months) in 2025 in the UK and possibly some shorter exchanges in Europe.
