Neighbourhood

The village of Cawthorne is a mile away; in the village there are a number of small shops, a lovely pub, cricket ground and church. Close by there is a large country house, museum and country park along with an excellent farm shop and open farm. The nearest small town is 4 miles away and has all the basic amenities, supermarket, shops, market, railway station and cafes. Trains can be easily accessed from local stations to major cities such as Leeds, York and Sheffield. We are situated just outside the Peak District National Park amid beautiful countryside, many outdoor activities are readily available e.g. hiking, biking, climbing. The Yorkshire Dales, North York Moors and Derbyshire Dales are also easily accessed. The surrounding area has a large number of local food producers, excellent farm shops and gastro pubs. The Yorkshire Sculpture Park and the Hepworth Gallery are only a short car ride away. The cities of Sheffield and Leeds are both only 15 miles away and have great shopping, restaurants, theatres and galleries. We find being in the centre of country, with easy access to motorways and rail links allows us to visit many areas with little difficulty. E.g. By car the coast is less than 2 hours; the Lake District less than 3 hours; York just 40 mins and Manchester 1 hour. London is less than 2 hours by rail from nearby Wakefield.

Getting around

The cottage is in a rural setting just over a mile from the nearest village so a car is essential.

Linda

My husband John and I retired in July 2015. This has given us more time to travel and pursue our interests. We are both keen gardeners and love all kinds of outdoor activities particularly mountain walking. John is also keen on cycling. We have two grown-up "children" and four grandchildren. Our son and his family live in Dunedin NZ so New Zealand is always a feature in our travel plans. We are always interested in places to stopover on route to NZ.
