General overview
Come stay at the Bessie Herbert House, built in 1923 and completely renovated to the studs in 2023. Our large and luxurious home is in the Brookland neighborhood of Washington DC, adjacent to Catholic University and it's beautiful 170 acre campus. A fantastic location, we are one block from Metro bus and 5 blocks from Metro rail (red line), which will give you access to the entire city. Walkable to restaurants and shops, we also have many delivery options for groceries and take -out.
Enjoy the world famous Smithsonian museums, DC art galleries, the Library of Congress or any of the other 70+ museums, all accessible with public transit.
If you enjoy biking or scooters, there are rental manual and electric versions available throughout the city. Explore the wonderful eateries, breweries and neighborhoods of DC like Adams Morgan and Georgetown.
If you bring a car, enjoy day trips to Shenandoah National Park, beach resorts on the Atlantic Ocean, the mountains of West Virginia or nearby Civil War battlefields.
There is so much to see and do in the Capital City of the USA!
The space
Our home is a completely renovated (top to bottom!) 1923 home with an open concept first floor that includes a sunny living room, dining room and sunroom with small desk, gorgeous fully-equipped gourmet kitchen, half bath and a deck off the back to enjoy outdoor eating and sunsets.
The second floor features one king bedroom with attached full bath with walk in shower and separate slipper tub, one queen bedroom, one study with a sofa bed and a full hall bath with tub/shower combo. The third floor features a queen bed, full bath and small balcony with beautiful views.
The basement is mostly used for family storage, but is fully finished and walk-out to the driveway. The basement also features a fitness room with a SoulCycle (similar to Peloton).
Parking includes a driveway for one car and a parking pad for offsite parking. Additionally, plenty of on-street parking is available at no fee.
Like many city homes, it's not well equipped for handicapped guests as stairs are required to get to the main floor from the street.
Two large washers and dryers are available for guest use, including detergent and fabric softener.
Guest access
The home has 4 floors. We invite our guests to walk through the basement and also use the fitness room, but otherwise, use the upper 3 floors, two decks and the garden.
The Wall Street Journal is delivered daily and our housekeeper comes on Mondays and Fridays.
Notes
The home has excellent Wifi and a large TV with Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video and cable stations.
We have a very lovely and sweet cat, Ginger, who will keep you company and will need light care. If you prefer to not care for her - no problem at all! We will make arrangements for a pet sitter to visit and take care of everything.
We have a housekeeper (at our expense) that comes twice a week to tidy up.
Please know that our neighborhood is in a city environment with normal city noises. We have 4 external security cameras, some with motion sensors and lights.

AMY
Hi! Small family of 3 in Washington DC. We travel all over the world and love meeting new people!
We are non-smokers and prefer non-smoking exchanges. We have a housekeeper who comes two times each week, she will also be available for your stay.
We are happy to care for your cats and/or plants while we enjoy your beautiful home and ask that you do the same. If this is not amenable, we can have a pet sitter care for our cat during your exchange with us.
Since we travel often, we are sometimes open to non-sim exchanges! Please enquire.
Washington DC is an amazing place to visit. There is so much culture, amazing food, free museums, beach and mountains nearby, hiking and wineries just outside the city. Connected by rail to the northeast to see Philadelphia or New York City. A fantastic "home base" to explore the east coast of the US.
People Like Us is the world's most trusted home exchange community. We believe in sharing, trust, generosity, respect, communication, equality, cooperation, honesty, hospitality, friendship, flexibility and adventure. We take pride in our homes and we care about the environment in which we live: our village, city, country and our planet. We care about the ethos of home exchange and we do it because we love the experience and the friendships that it generates.
